Stability and slightly supercritical oscillatory regimes of natural convection in a 8:1 cavity: solution of the benchmark problem by a global Galerkin method

The global Galerkin method is applied to the benchmark problem that considers an oscillatory regime of convection of air in a tall two‐dimensional rectangular cavity. The three most unstable modes of the linearized system of the Boussinesq equations are studied. The converged values of the critical Rayleigh numbers together with the corresponding oscillation frequencies are calculated for each mode. The oscillatory flow regimes corresponding to each of the three modes are approximated asymptotically. No direct time integration is applied. Good agreement with the previously published results obtained by solution of the time‐dependent Boussinesq equations is reported. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Computations of two passing‐by high‐speed trains by a relaxation overset‐grid algorithm

This paper presents a relaxation algorithm, which is based on the overset grid technology, an unsteady three‐dimensional Navier–Stokes flow solver, and an inner‐ and outer‐relaxation method, for simulation of the unsteady flows of moving high‐speed trains. The flow solutions on the overlapped grids can be accurately updated by introducing a grid tracking technique and the inner‐ and outer‐relaxation method. To evaluate the capability and solution accuracy of the present algorithm, the computational static pressure distribution of a single stationary TGV high‐speed train inside a long tunnel is investigated numerically, and is compared with the experimental data from low‐speed wind tunnel test. Further, the unsteady flows of two TGV high‐speed trains passing by each other inside a long tunnel and at the tunnel entrance are simulated. A series of time histories of pressure distributions and aerodynamic loads acting on the train and tunnel surfaces are depicted for detailed discussions. Laguerre approximation of stable manifolds with application to connecting orbits

We present an algorithm, based on approximation by Laguerre polynomials, for computing a point on the stable manifold of a stationary solution of an autonomous system. A superconvergence phenomenon means that the accuracy of our results is much higher than the usual spectral accuracy. Both the theory and the implementation of the method are considered. Finally, as an application of the algorithm, we describe a fully spectral approximation of homo- and heteroclinic orbits.

This paper continues the investigation about the singularity theory in dual rich quasi–Banach spaces given in T. Runst [Ru 2]. The abstract results are applied to the study of the solution structure of semilinear elliptic boundary value problems in spaces of Besov – Triebel – Lizorkin type.     

Some non-local problems for the parabolic-hyperbolic type equation with non-characteristic line of changing type

In this work two non-local problems for the parabolic-hyperbolic type equation with non-characteristic line of changing type are considered. Unique solvability of these problems is proven. The uniqueness of the solution is proven by the method of energy integrals and the existence is proven by the method of integral equations.
