AbstractObjectives: The objective of this study was the investigation of age- and sex-associations in a set of blood plasma metabolites in healthy male and female subjects.Methods: A comparison study design with male and female subjects of various ages was used. Metabolic profiling was performed using electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry that yielded 186 metabolite concentrations for each study participant. The key age-related metabolites were identified using an integrative analysis of absolute concentrations, metabolite ratios and the differential correlation of pairwise metabolite concentrations. All of the age-associated metabolites were adjusted prior to the analysis to account for differences in Body Mass Index (BMI).Results: A total of 236 plasma samples from 140 female and 96 male subjects aged 20 to 82 years-old were collected and analyzed in the study. 13 and 14 age-associated metabolites (|r|?>?0.33 and p < 6.6×10?5), 438 and 337 age-associated metabolite ratios (|r|?>?0.37 and p < 3.5×10?6), and 5 and 10 core metabolites were discovered in the female and male groups, respectively. 80% of the metabolites displaying associations with age belonged to sphingolipids and phosphatidylcholines, and the two sexes shared less than 50% of the age-associated metabolites.Conclusion: The study found that changes in metabolite concentrations, metabolite ratios and differential correlations were age and sex-specific. 相似文献

Abstract Adaptive management requires that predictive models be explicit and transparent to improve decisions by comparing management actions, directing further research and monitoring, and facilitating learning. The rufa subspecies of red knots (Calidris canutus rufa), which has recently exhibited steep population declines, relies on horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) eggs as their primary food source during stopover in Delaware Bay during spring migration. We present a model with two different parameterizations for use in the adaptive management of horseshoe crab harvests in the Delaware Bay that links red knot mass gain, annual survival, and fecundity to horseshoe crab dynamics. The models reflect prevailing hypotheses regarding ecological links between these two species. When reported crab harvest from 1998 to 2008 was applied, projections corresponded to the observed red knot population abundances depending on strengths of the demographic relationship between these species. We compared different simulated horseshoe crab harvest strategies to evaluate whether, given this model, horseshoe crab harvest management can affect red knot conservation and found that restricting harvest can benefit red knot populations. Our model is the first to explicitly and quantitatively link these two species and will be used within an adaptive management framework to manage the Delaware Bay system and learn more about the specific nature of the linkage between the two species. 相似文献

A methyl-branched heptadecanol was found in the pheromone gland extract of a female lichen moth, Miltochrista calamina (Arctiidae, Lithosiinae). GC-MS analyses of the alcohol and a hydrocarbon derived from it by subsequent treatments with methanesulfonyl chloride and LiAlD4 in microscale reactions indicated 5-methylheptadecan-7-ol (1) as one possible structure. The four stereoisomers of 1 in a ratio of 4:4:1:1 were prepared from (S)-β-citronellol with 60% ee, and were separated by a combination of achiral and chiral HPLC columns. The absolute configuration of each isomer was determined by the comparison with the chromatographic behaviors of other samples synthesized by a different scheme, which applied the Jacobsen hydrolytic kinetic resolution of racemic 1,2-epoxydodecane to fix the configuration of the 7-hydroxy group. Only the (5R,7R)-isomer attracted male moths; thus, we concluded that M. calamina females secrete (5R,7R)-1 as a sex pheromone, indicating a new chemical class of lepidopteran female sex pheromones. 相似文献

Cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) is a dioecious plant that produces both male and female inflorescences. In nature, male and female plants can be found with nearly equal frequency, which determines species out-crossing. In cannabis farming, only female plants are preferred due to their high yield of cannabinoids. In addition to unfavorable male plants, commercial production of cannabis faces the appearance of hermaphroditic inflorescences, species displaying both pistillate flowers and anthers. Such plants can out-cross female plants, simultaneously producing undesired seeds. The problem of hermaphroditic cannabis triggered a search for analytical tools that can be used for their rapid detection and identification. In this study, we investigate the potential of Raman spectroscopy (RS), an emerging sensing technique that can be used to probe plant biochemistry. Our results show that the biochemistry of male, female and hermaphroditic cannabis plants is drastically different which allows for their confirmatory identification using a hand-held Raman spectrometer. Furthermore, the coupling of machine learning approaches enables the identification of hermaphrodites with 98.7% accuracy, whereas both male and female plants can be identified with 100% accuracy. Considering the label-free, non-invasive and non-destructive nature of RS, the developed optical sensing approach can transform cannabis farming in the U.S. and overseas. 相似文献
