Elastic and Thermophysical Properties of Poly(Vinyl Chloride) and Chlorinated Polyethylene Blends

The results of experimental and theoretical investigations of elastic and thermophysical properties of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) blends are presented. Eight types of specimens with different ratios of weight contents of PVC and CPE (PVC/CPE = 100/0, 90/10, 80/20, 60/40, 40/60, 20/80, 10/90, and 0/100) were tested. The effect of blend composition on the elastic constants (tensile and shear modulus) is discussed. The data on the thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and heat capacity of the blends investigated are also presented.     

Preliminary results of a non-spherical aerosol method for the retrieval of the atmospheric aerosol optical properties

There is experimental evidence that the non-sphericity of certain atmospheric particles can cause scattering properties different from those predicted by standard Mie theory. Numerous studies indicate the need to consider the presence of non-spherical particles in modeling the optical properties of atmospheric aerosols. On the other hand, natural aerosols show a great variety of shapes, making difficult a realistic choice of a particle shape (or shape mixture) model. In this paper, we test a parameterization of the particle shape in the retrieval of size distribution, phase function, single scattering albedo and asymmetry parameter from direct and sky-radiance measurements. For this purpose we have substituted the Kernel based on the Mie theory included in the model SKYRAD.PACK by one derived for non-spherical particles. The method is applied under different atmospheric conditions, including Saharan dust outbreak, polluted and local mineral episodes. We compare the results with those obtained by the well known spheroids algorithm used in the AERONET network.     

STUDY ON THE CONFORMATIONAL PROPERTIES OF RIGID POLYELECTROLYTE SPU IN SOLUTION

The conformation and dimension of SPU polyanion have been studied by viscosity and quasi-elastic light scattering methods. The rigidity of SPU is somewhat similar to CMC and its hydrodynamic radius decreases only slowly with increasing concentration of NaCl.

Synthesis and crystal structure of 1,3,5-tris [4-(phenylethynyl)phenyl]benzene

The crystal structure of 1,3,5-tris[4-(phenylethynyl)phenyl]benzene (1) has been investigated. Compound1 represents a model of the repeating unit of the most typical polyphenylene, which contains 1,3,5-trisubstituted benzene rings (chain centers) and acetylenic groups (complex-forming and cross-linking centers) in the main chain. The acetylene groups of neighboring molecules have a tendency to close mutual arrangement, which is favorable for their topochemical interaction. However, the relative conformational rigidity of molecules1 restricts not only the possibility of the optimal adjustment of the reactive sites of neighboring molecules to one another, but also hampers the close packing of molecules in the crystal, which contains channels filled by the solvent molecules (chloroform).Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. High temperature superconducting thin films for microwave filters

YBa₂Cu₃O_7-δ and Tl₂Ba₂CaCu₂O₈ thin films for microwave filters were synthesized by pulsed laser deposition and the two-step thalliation process. Substrate quality requirements and the relation of thin film morphology, microstructure with microwave surface resistance were discussed.     

Modulation of Particle Concentrations in the Interference Laser Radiation Field

Spatial redistribution of microparticles in a suspension on exposure to the interference laser field depending on the parameters of the particles and the field characteristics has been analyzed theoretically. Results of experimental investigations are presented that illustrate the capture of an ensemble of polymeric small spheres and also of the lymphocytes of human blood and other microparticles in a liquid in the interference radiation bands of the He–Ne laser.     

Intravascular and Intracellular Hepatic Relaxivities of Superparamagnetic Particles: An Isolated and Perfused Organ Pharmacokinetics Study

The relative contributions of intravascular and intracellular compartments to the proton transverse relaxation of the isolated and excised rat liver were determined during the phagocytosis of superparamagnetic particles. The evolution of the proton transverse magnetization of the organ perfused with increasing doses of starch-coated magnetic microspheres was followed up using a Carr–Purcell–Meiboom–Gill sequence with various echo times. From the multiexponential fit of the echo train, the amplitudes and the relaxation ratesR₂of the liver tissue were obtained. The results clearly indicate that shortly after contrast medium administration, an internalization takes place which can be followed by the rapid and biphasic evolution of the transverse relaxation rate of the water protons. A very fast decaying component looking like an initial loss of the magnetization is observed together with an increase of the relaxation rate of the remaining water tissue. This regime is strongly dependent on both the echo time and the iron concentration, a behavior characteristic of the agglomeration of magnetic particles. The examination of the liver tissues by electron microscopy shows that this clustering arises in cytoplasmic vacuoles.
