Bounded sets in topological groups and embeddings

We show that the existence of a non-metrizable compact subspace of a topological group G often implies that G contains an uncountable supersequence (a copy of the one-point compactification of an uncountable discrete space). The existence of uncountable supersequences in a topological group has a strong impact on bounded subsets of the group. For example, if a topological group G contains an uncountable supersequence and K is a closed bounded subset of G which does not contain uncountable supersequences, then any subset A of K is bounded in G?(K?A). We also show that every precompact Abelian topological group H can be embedded as a closed subgroup into a precompact Abelian topological group G such that H is bounded in G and all bounded subsets of the quotient group G/H are finite. This complements Ursul's result on closed embeddings of precompact groups to pseudocompact groups.     

A construction of lattices on certain solvable Lie groups

The purpose in this paper is to prove that there exists a lattice on certain solvable Lie groups and to construct a symplectic solvmanifold with the Hard Lefschetz property, and a locally conformal Kähler solvmanifold. We see that minimal models for these solvmanifolds are formal.     

Strongly countable dimensional compacta form the Hurewicz set

The hyperspaces of strongly countable dimensional compacta of positive dimension and of strongly countable dimensional continua of dimension greater than 1 in the Hilbert cube are homeomorphic to the Hurewicz set of all nonempty countable closed subsets of the unit interval [0,1]. These facts hold true, in particular, for covering dimension dim and cohomological dimension dimG, where G is any Abelian group.     

On a theorem of Shchepin and Repovš concerning the smoothness of compacta

We show that a theorem of Shchepin and Repovš concerning the smoothness of compacta follows from the theory of semicontinuous relations.     

嵌套病例对照研究中的两步估计方法（英）

本文讨论嵌套病例对照研究中相对危险率的估计问题，引入了相对危险率的两步估计，并在一般嵌套病例对照抽样的假设下讨论了相对危险率的两步估计的相合性问题，最后给出了几个例子。     

Chemical imaging in biology and medicine using ion microscopy

The ability to quantitatively map the distribution of elements on the micrometer scale and smaller with high sensitivity and isotopic discrimination is unique to ion microscopy. The information contained in ion images can be crucial to the study of the solid state, where chemical heterogeneity is often directly related to observed behavior. The tools of digital image processing allow the extraction of quantitative information from the image data. These techniques coupled with improved instrumentation for the detection of ion images drastically increase the problem solving capabilities of the ion microscope. The use of such methods and instrumentation in the ion microscopic analyses of cell cultures and tissues of biological and biomedical relevance will be discussed.     

Theoretical study of anion carriers based on trifluoroacetophenone

Model calculations on anion carrier ligands related to trifluoroacetophenone were carried out using the semiempirical AM 1 method in order to investigate the factors involved in such anion-ligand complexation. The reaction of halogen derivatives of acetophenone with various nucleophiles such as water, carbonic acid, and bicarbonate anion was studied. By this means, the effect of various structural changes, such as variation of the ring substituents and variation of the degree and type of halogen atom substitution, could be determined. It is shown that in terms of relative stability, fluorine derivatives are preferable to chlorine derivatives for the binding of water and carbonic acid. Monosubstitution of a methoxy group in the ortho position of the trifluoroacetophenone ring also brought about stability in the case of the hydration reaction. An electron-withdrawing ester group in the para position on the trifluoroacetophenone ring brings about stabilization also.     

Depth profiling of latex blends of fluorinated and fluorine‐free acrylates with laser‐induced secondary mass spectrometry

We explored phase separation and self‐assembly of perfluoroalkyl segments at the surface of polymer films obtained from latices of semifluorinated acrylate copolymers and the corresponding latex blends of nonfluorinated and semifluorinated polyacrylates. With laser‐induced secondary mass spectrometry the fluorine distribution was measured after annealing above the minimum film‐forming temperature of the polymers up to a depth of several micrometers. Depth profiles of a semifluorinated acrylate homopolymer and latex blends thereof with fluorine‐free alkylacrylates with 25, 50, and 75 mol % semifluorinated acrylate as well as a copolymer comprised of alkyl acrylate and semifluorinated acrylate (50/50 mol %) were investigated. In the case of latex blends containing both semifluorinated polyacrylates and fluorine‐free or low‐fluorine polymers, self‐assembly accounted for enrichment of the perfluoroalkyl segments at the surface. Coatings exhibiting low surface energy and having a substantially reduced total fluorine content were obtained. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 41: 360–367, 2003     

Bounds for the cup-length of Poincaré spaces and their applications

Our main result offers a new (quite systematic) way of deriving bounds for the cup-length of Poincaré spaces over fields; we outline a general research program based on this result. For the oriented Grassmann manifolds, already a limited realization of the program leads, in many cases, to the exact values of the cup-length and to interesting information on the Lyusternik-Shnirel'man category.
