In this article we study uniqueness of positive solutions for the nonlinear uniformly elliptic equation in RN, limr→∞u(r)=0, where denotes the Pucci's extremal operator with parameters 0<λ?Λ and p>1. It is known that all positive solutions of this equation are radially symmetric with respect to a point in RN, so the problem reduces to the study of a radial version of this equation. However, this is still a nontrivial question even in the case of the Laplacian (λ=Λ). The Pucci's operator is a prototype of a nonlinear operator in no-divergence form. This feature makes the uniqueness question specially challenging, since two standard tools like Pohozaev identity and global integration by parts are no longer available. Global depth, tangent depth and simplicial depths for classical and orthogonal regression are compared in examples, and properties that are useful for calculations are derived. The robustness of the maximum simplicial depth estimates is shown in examples. Algorithms for the calculation of depths for orthogonal regression are proposed, and tests for multiple regression are transferred to orthogonal regression. These tests are distribution free in the case of bivariate observations. For a particular test problem, the powers of tests that are based on simplicial depth and tangent depth are compared by simulations.  相似文献

For a Banach space B and for a class A of its bounded closed retracts, endowed with the Hausdorff metric, we prove that retractions on elements AA can be chosen to depend continuously on A, whenever nonconvexity of each AA is less than . The key geometric argument is that the set of all uniform retractions onto an α-paraconvex set (in the spirit of E. Michael) is -paraconvex subset in the space of continuous mappings of B into itself. We study linearly ordered spaces which are Valdivia compact in their order topology. We find an internal characterization of these spaces and we present a counter-example disproving a conjecture posed earlier by the first author. The conjecture asserted that a compact line is Valdivia compact if its weight does not exceed 1, every point of uncountable character is isolated from one side and every closed first countable subspace is metrizable. It turns out that the last condition is not sufficient. On the other hand, we show that the conjecture is valid if the closure of the set of points of uncountable character is scattered. The recent literature offers examples, specific and hand-crafted, of Tychonoff spaces (in ZFC) which respond negatively to these questions, due respectively to Ceder and Pearson (1967) [3] and to Comfort and García-Ferreira (2001) [5]: (1) Is every ω-resolvable space maximally resolvable? (2) Is every maximally resolvable space extraresolvable? Now using the method of KID expansion, the authors show that every suitably restricted Tychonoff topological space (X,T) admits a larger Tychonoff topology (that is, an “expansion”) witnessing such failure. Specifically the authors show in ZFC that if (X,T) is a maximally resolvable Tychonoff space with S(X,T)?Δ(X,T)=κ, then (X,T) has Tychonoff expansions U=Ui (1?i?5), with Δ(X,Ui)=Δ(X,T) and S(X,Ui)?Δ(X,Ui), such that (X,Ui) is: (i=1) ω-resolvable but not maximally resolvable; (i=2) [if κ is regular, with S(X,T)?κ?κ] τ-resolvable for all τ<κ, but not κ-resolvable; (i=3) maximally resolvable, but not extraresolvable; (i=4) extraresolvable, but not maximally resolvable; (i=5) maximally resolvable and extraresolvable, but not strongly extraresolvable.  相似文献

In this paper, we present families of quasi-convex sequences converging to zero in the circle group T, and the group J3 of 3-adic integers. These sequences are determined by increasing sequences of integers. For an increasing sequence , put gn=an+1−an. We prove that
(a)
the set {0}∪{±3−(an+1)|nN} is quasi-convex in T if and only if a0>0 and gn>1 for every nN;
(b)
the set {0}∪{±an3|nN} is quasi-convex in the group J3 of 3-adic integers if and only if gn>1 for every nN.
Moreover, we solve an open problem from [D. Dikranjan, L. de Leo, Countably infinite quasi-convex sets in some locally compact abelian groups, Topology Appl. 157 (8) (2010) 1347-1356] providing a complete characterization of the sequences such that {0}∪{±2−(an+1)|nN} is quasi-convex in T. Using this result, we also obtain a characterization of the sequences such that the set {0}∪{±2−(an+1)|nN} is quasi-convex in R.  相似文献

Kada, Tomoyasu and Yoshinobu proved that the Stone-?ech compactification of a locally compact separable metrizable space is approximated by the collection of d-many Smirnov compactifications, where d is the dominating number. By refining the proof of this result, we will show that the collection of compatible metrics on a locally compact separable metrizable space has the same cofinal type, in the sense of Tukey relation, as the set of functions from ω to ω with respect to eventually dominating order.  相似文献
