We argue that quantum-gravitational fluctuations in the space-time background give the vacuum non-trivial optical properties that include diffusion and consequent uncertainties in the arrival times of photons, causing stochastic fluctuations in the velocity of light in vacuo. Our proposal is motivated within a Liouville string formulation of quantum gravity that also suggests a frequency-dependent refractive index of the particle vacuum. We construct an explicit realization by treating photon propagation through quantum excitations of D-brane fluctuations in the space-time foam. These are described by higher-genus string effects, that lead to stochastic fluctuations in couplings, and hence in the velocity of light. We discuss the possibilities of constraining or measuring photon diffusion in vacuo via -ray observations of distant astrophysical sources. 相似文献

The interposition of surfactants between polymer and liquid crystal (LC) droplets was theoretically predicted by the positive spreading coefficient (0 < λ31) and utilized to interpret the morphology, grating formation kinetics, diffraction efficiency, and switching of the holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal (HPDLC), prepared from various types (octanoic acid, poly oxyethylene octyl phenyl ether, and perfluoro‐1‐butanesulfonyl fluoride) and amounts (0–9 wt%) of surfactant and molecular weights of polyol (PPG). Regardless of the surfactant type, diffraction efficiency increased with the addition and increasing amount of surfactant, a tendency consistent with increasing value of spreading coefficient, which is determined by the formulations of grating formation. In contrast, diffraction efficiency showed a maximum with the polypropylene glycol (PPG) molecular weight. Surfactant effectively reduced the anchoring energy and electrically drove the film which otherwise was not driven. Overall, surfactant with greater λ31 gave smaller droplet, greater diffraction efficiency, driving voltage, contrast ratio, and smaller response time. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Laboratory-made asymmetric polyurethane membranes designed for immunoisolation were investigated. Two types of EK and ES membranes
were prepared in different spinning conditions.
The membrane structure was characterised by the skin pore radius measurements using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).
Diffusive transport properties of membranes were determined by in vitro method for albumin and creatinine. The scanning electron
microscopy (SEM) was applied to study the morphology of membranes.
It has been found that the DSC technique is a useful tool for the evaluation of pore radii in the skin layer for PU membranes.
Calculated pore radii were in the range from 1.95 to 2.47 nm for the EK and ES types. A correlation between the skin pore
radii and the transport properties was not found in this case of investigated membranes. However, the transport properties
data can serve for the estimation of selectivity of membranes. Thus, the selectivity of membranes for solutes of various molecular
size was estimated from the D
m/D
w ratio of diffusion coefficients for albumin and creatinine. The SEM micrographs reveal the finger-like internal structure
of capillary membranes, as well as various skin thickness.

Phase change materials(PCMs) are important for sustaining energy development. For the thermal performance enhancement, the composite PCM with metal foam reconstructed by the Voronoi method is investigated in this work. The lattice Boltzmann method(LBM) is used to analyze the melting process on a pore scale. The melting interface evolution and temperature contour of the composite PCM are explored and compared with those of pure PCM. Moreover, structure parameters including the pore density, porosity and irregularity are investigated comprehensively, indicating that the additive of metal foam strengthens the melting performance of PCM obviously. Compared with pure PCM, the composite PCM has quick rates of the melting front evolution and heat transfer. The heat conduction plays a great role in the whole melting process since the convection is weakened for the composite PCM. To improve the melting efficiency, a larger pore density and smaller irregularity are recommended in general. More significantly, a suitable porosity is determined based on the requirement for the balance between the melting rate and heat storage capacity in practical engineering. 相似文献

This investigation examines the transient deformation and heat generation of a solid polyurethane subjected to dynamic compression. A special method is presented to prepare the solid polyurethane from raw materials which are commonly used to make polyurethane foams. Testing methods including infrared spectrum, differential scanning calorimetry, quasi-static and dynamic compression were applied to study the basic physical properties of the solid polyurethane. High-speed optical and infrared imaging systems are used to obtain visual and thermo-graphic images during impact tests. Under quasi-static compression, the solid polyurethane presents a good performance in toughness. This is confirmed by its Poisson's ratio. Under impact compression, the adiabatic heat generation are identified statistically. Temperature distribution confirms the fact of transient heat generation in specimens. Adiabatic self-heating mechanism provides a consideration to understand the negative strain-rate effect and post-yield softening effect found in the solid polyurethane. Mechanical properties including quasi-static and dynamic responses are related with the composition of molecular and structure of polymer. 相似文献

A parallel-plate rheomete was constructed and used to study the development of dynamic shear modulus and cell opening under forced adiabatic conditions for a series of flexible slabstock polyurethane foams. Typical industrial formulations were used. The plates were heated to follow the adiabatic temperature profile of a real foam bun during foaming. The rheometer overcomes difficulties encountered in other methods such as heat loss and bubble damage caused by the probe.A four-stage modulus development profile was observed: initial bubble growth, bubble network, polymer stiffening and final curing. Chemical structure development was also studied under forced adiabatic conditions, using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Polymer stiffening coincided with bidentate (hydrogen-bonded) urea formation.The normal force exerted by the expanding foam on the plates was found to be a function of the rate of foam expansion and the foam modulus. A sudden drop in the normal force typically coincides with the visually observed blow-off in the reacting foam bun, thus the normal force profile is a new and accurate indicator of cell opening. The normal force profile clearly shows that cell opening occurs just after the onset of polymer stiffening, thus illustrating the role of polymer rheology in the cell opening mechanism.Dedicated to the memory of Professor Tasos C.
