The phase behavior of poly(N‐tertbutylacrylamide‐co‐acrylamide) (PNTBAM) in pure water and mixture of water–methanol is studied at different temperatures. The different compositions of PNTBAM are prepared by free‐radical polymerization technique and their phase behavior is studied by turbidimetry. The effects of copolymer and solvent composition on the phase behavior of the copolymers are discussed. It has been suggested that the inhomogenities in polymer chains are responsible for lowering the rate of phase transition by increasing the N‐tertbutylacrylamide (NTBAM) and methanol contents in copolymer and mixture, respectively. For the first time we have revealed that there are second‐order binary interactions in the water–methanol which are dominant in the special range of copolymer composition. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The novel copolymers of acrylamide (AM) with complex pseudorotaxane monomer (BAMACB) of butyl ammonium methacrylate (BAMA) and cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6]) were prepared via free‐radical polymerization in aqueous solution. The copolymers containing pseudorotaxane (PAM/BAMACB) were characterized by 1H‐NMR, FTIR, elemental analysis, TGA, and DSC. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the copolymer PAM/BAMACB are higher than that of the copolymer of acrylamide and butyl ammonium methacrylate (PAM/BAMA) because of the enhanced rigidity and the bulky steric hindrance of BAMACB side chain in PAM/BAMACB. The molecular weights of copolymer PAM/BAMACB were obtained via static light scattering. The monomer N‐vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) undergoes side reactions in the presence of R group functional xanthates and impurities. The fate of the monomer NVP and a selection of six O‐ethyl xanthates during xanthate‐mediated polymerization were studied via NMR spectroscopy. A high number of by‐products were identified. Significant side reactions affecting NVP include the formation of an unsaturated dimer and hydration products in bulk or in solution in C6D6. In addition, the xanthate adjacent to a NVP unit was found to undergo elimination at moderate temperature (60–70 °C), resulting in unsaturated species and the formation of new xanthate species. The presence of the chlorinated compound α‐chlorophenyl acetic acid, ethyl ester, a precursor in the synthesis of the xanthate S‐(2‐ethyl phenylacetate) O‐ethyl xanthate, resulted in a dramatic increase in the rate of side reactions such as unsaturated dimer formation and a high ratio of unsaturated chain ends. The conditions for the occurrence of such side reactions are discussed in this article, with relevance to increasing the control over the polymerization kinetics, endgroup functionality, and control over the molar mass distribution. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Statistical copolymers of di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (MEO2MA) and tri(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (MEO3MA) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) providing copolymers with controlled composition and molecular weights ranging from Mn = 8,300–56,500 with polydispersity indexes (Mw/Mn) between 1.19 and 1.28. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the copolymers increased with the mole fraction of MEO3MA in the copolymer over the range from 26 to 52 °C. The average hydrodynamic diameter, measured by dynamic light scattering, varied with temperature above the LCST. These two monomers were also block copolymerized by ATRP to form polymers with molecular weight of Mn = 30,000 and Mw/Mn from 1.12 to 1.21. The LCST of the block copolymers shifted toward the LCST of the major segment, as compared to the value measured for the statistical copolymers at the same composition. As temperature increased, micelles, consisting of aggregated PMEO2MA cores and PMEO3MA shell, were formed. High‐resolution total variation diminishing (TVD) schemes are widely used for the numerical approximation of hyperbolic conservation laws. Their extension to equations with source terms involving spatial derivatives is not obvious. In this work, efficient ways of constructing conservative schemes from the conservative, non‐conservative or characteristic form of the equations are described in detail. An upwind, as opposed to a pointwise, treatment of the source terms is adopted here, and a new technique is proposed in which source terms are included in the flux limiter functions to get a complete second‐order compact scheme. A new correction to fix the entropy problem is also presented and a robust treatment of the boundary conditions according to the discretization used is stated. In this paper, a new numerical model, based on a set of non‐linear shallow water equations is developed for the simulation of the formation and evolution of tidal bore in the Hangzhou Gulf and Qiantangjiang river of China. The numerical method and boundary conditions are described in detail. The method is validated against analytical solutions and experimental data. Simulation of the actual tidal bore in Hangzhou Gulf and its propagation in the Qiantangjiang river are performed. Numerical results show that this proposed method is effective for the prediction of tidal bore and current flow at the entrance of Qiantangjiang river. JSC‐1a (a simulated lunar dust sample) supported on a silica wafer (SiO2/Si(111)) has been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x‐ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). The adsorption kinetics of water has been studied primarily by thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) and in addition by collecting isothermal adsorption transients. Blind experiments on the silica support have been performed as well. JSC‐1a consists mostly of aluminosilicate glass and other minerals containing Fe, Na, Ca, and Mg, as characterized in detail in prior studies, for example, at NASA. The particle sizes span the range from a few micrometers up to 100 µm. At small exposures, H2O TDS is characterized by broad (100–450) K structures; at large exposures, distinct TDS peaks emerge, which are assigned to amorphous solid water (ASW) (145 K) and crystalline ice (CI) (165 K). Water dissociates on JSC‐1a at small exposures but not on the bare silica support. Coadsorption TDS data (alkane–water mixtures) indicate that rather porous condensed ice layers form at large exposures, with the mineral particles acting most likely as nucleation sites. At thermal impact energies, the initial adsorption probability amounts to 0.92 ± 0.05. It is evident that the drop‐and‐dry technique, developed in studies about nanoparticles/tubes, can be extended to obtain samples for surface science studies based on powders consisting of particles with rather large diameters. The thermal behavior associated with the melting of ice was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for the gel and L-subgel phases of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC)-water system of varying water contents up to a full hydration. By calorimetric analysis previously developed by us, the numbers of differently bound water molecules were estimated, and used to construct water distribution diagrams (i.e., a plot of the cumulative numbers of these water molecules vs. water content) for the two phases. A comparison of the diagrams revealed the critical role of interlamellar water which changes from freezable to non-freezable one in a conversion of the gel to the L-subgel phase by the thermal annealing.
