Optical applications of quantum dots in biological system

This review presents a simple introduction on the unique properties and general synthesis of quantum dots (QDs) in which we lay emphasis on the optical applications in the biological system. The detection of biological molecules such as DNA, protein and enzyme, the cell-based analysis and in vivo animal imaging are mainly discussed.     

Conjugated polyelectrolytes and neutral polymers with poly(2,7‐carbazole) backbone: Synthesis,characterization, and photovoltaic application

Poly(2,7‐carbazole) neutral polymers (PC‐N, PC‐NOH, and PC‐P) and polyelectrolytes (PC‐NBr and PC‐SO₃Na) with hydrophilic pendant groups of ammonium, phosphonate, and sulfonate were synthesized as interlayers for cathode modifications in bulk‐heterojunction photovoltaic cells (BHJ PVCs). The absorptions of the polymers were determined by the poly(2,7‐carbazole) backbone, showing absorption peaks at ～390 nm for their solutions and films. Because of large intermolecular interactions, excimer emissions with wavelengths higher than 500 nm were found in the photoluminescence spectra of the films of the polymers, which weakened the light emissions of the polymers. PC‐N, PC‐NBr, PC‐NOH, and PC‐P possessed comparable HOMO levels of ?5.23 eV and LUMO levels of ?2.4 eV, but HOMO and LUMO levels of PC‐SO₃Na were up‐lying to ?4.91 and ?2.12 eV, respectively. PC‐N, PC‐NBr, PC‐NOH, and PC‐P were selected to construct thin interlayers in BHJ PVCs with PFO‐DBT35:PCBM = 1:4 as the active layer. Compared with traditional Al cathode, bilayer cathodes with the interlayers showed improvements of open‐circuit voltages and short‐circuit currents of the PVCs. PC‐NOH was the best for the photovoltaic performances and over 20% increase of power conversion efficiency (PCE) was achieved. The bilayer cathodes would have great potential to further elevate PCE of BHJ PVCs with other active layer materials. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011     

Steepest-descent method-based adaptive frequency domain equalizer in coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with quadrature phase shift keying modulation

An adaptive frequency domain equalizer (A-FDE) in quadrature phase shift keying-coherent optical-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (QPSK-CO-OFDM) system is proposed in this paper. A-FDE uses steepest descent method to search the optimal equalization parameters. And through applying the adaptive control factor (ACF) to monitor the state of A-FDE, the interference from phase noise (PN) and chromatic dispersion (CD) can be mitigated. The numerical simulation shows that the performance of A-FDE has a remarkable improvement on combating PN and CD comparing with the conventional decision-directed equalizer (DDE). And the A-FDE can achieve the forward-error-correction (FEC) threshold in noisier scenario. Furthermore, because the calculation of ACF only bases on valid data instead of pilot symbols (PSs), A-FDE has low PS overhead merit.     

Measurement of fiber propagation constants using a prism-fiber coupler

We report on the use of a prism-fiber coupler to determine the propagation constants for the scalar modes in an optical fiber by measuring, respectively, the incident angle, θ_i, and the position of the m-lines coupled out of the fiber by the prism coupler. The position is related to the value of the corresponding propagation constant. The degeneracy of the modes is shown on the m-line photographs. Good agreement is obtained between measured and calculated values of the propagation constants.     

Photosensitive Materials for Integrated Optic Applications

Abstract

This article presents results of device fabrication using UV processing of materials and integrated optic components produced by flame hydrolysis deposition and hybrid sol-gel technology. Photosensitive materials were employed in the fabrication of channel waveguides and channel photo-imprinted waveguides incorporating Bragg gratings through single and double-step exposure.     

Optical and Electrical Properties of Ferroelectric SBN Thin Films Prepared by Sol-Gel Process

Strontium barium niobate thin films were prepared by sol-gel method on various substrates using an improved process, two-step heating process. The two-step heating process applies an additive heat-treatment before crystallization for enhancement of the densification and the nucleation of films. Also, highly c-axis oriented SBN thin films with various compositions were obtained on MgO(100) and Pt(100)/MgO(100) substrates. Their optical and electrical properties such as optical propagation loss, refractive index, P-E hysteresis, and dielectric constant, were characterized as a function of the film composition.

Existence, upper and lower solutions and quasilinearization for singular differential equations

In this paper, we discuss existence theorems in the presenceof upper and lower solutions as well as the method of quasilinearization(QSL) for general non-linear second-order singular ordinarydifferential equations. We show the existence of solutions underthe assumption of weak continuity of the non-linear part. Ifthe non-linear part is monotone decreasing, a solution may beobtained by the QSL method as the strong limit of a quadraticallyconvergent sequence of approximate solutions. Under strongerassumptions on the linear and the non-linear parts, a solutionis quadratically bracketed between two monotone sequences ofapproximate solutions of certain related linear equations.     

Suppression of Q-switching instabilities in broadened-waveguide monolithic mode-locked laser diodes

It is predicted theoretically that broadening the optical confinement layer in monolithic mode-locked semiconductor lasers may suppress Q-switching instability, by increasing the carrier transport time, and lead to emission of shorter, more stable optical pulses.
