The Informational Nature of Quantum Mechanics: A Novel Look at the Interference Experiment

It is argued that the nature of probability is essentially informational rather than physical and that quantum mechanical predictions should be viewed as logical inferences made on the basis of the information content of a given experimental situation. By implementing such a viewpoint, it is possible to maintain a sharp distinction between the physical and statistical aspects of quantum mechanics. The idea is applied to the double-beam interference experiment, reproducing the results of the standard formulation of quantum mechanics in a manner that renders the notion of wave-particle duality superfluous.

Inspired by literature on free transversal vibrations of one axially moving belt, we derive and solve analytically coupled partial differential equations of the transversal vibrations of an axially moving sandwich double-belt system. A numerical experiment and visualization are carried out.

Change of Color Appearance in Photopic,Mesopic and Scotopic Vision

Mesopic vision describes a range of light levels where vision is mediated by both cones and rods. The appearance of color in mesopic vision differs drastically from that in photopic vision, where only cones mediate visual information. We used a haploscopic color matching technique to investigate the color appearance under various illuminance levels, ranging from photopic to scotopic via mesopic levels. The observers did color matching between a test color chip under various illuminance levels and a matching color stimulus presented on the Cathode-Ray Tube (CRT) display under the photopic illuminance condition. The results showed that not only chroma and lightness but hue of most color chips changed with illuminance. The manner of the hue changed depended on the color of the test chip, while matching points approached a neutral gray with decrease in illuminance level for all test chips. Chroma reduced continuously with decrease of the illuminance level until 0.1 lx for reddish and yellowish color chips or until 1 lx for greenish and bluish ones. Beyond those illuminance levels, chroma was approximately constant. Lightness decreased with decreasing illuminance level for all test chips except bluish color chips, for which lightness did not decrease much in general and even increased in some cases as predicted by the Purkinje shift. The experimental results obtained in the present study provide critical features that should be considered in predicting the appearance of color at low light levels.

Waves behind a Step in an Open Channel

The paper presents experimental data on flow in the vicinity of a sudden elevation of channel bottom (step). The range of external flow parameters is considered for the case where the step generates waves. A distinguishing feature of these waves is that they are formed in transition from subcritical to supercritical flow. It is shown that there is a range of external parameters in which the depth at the channel exit, the depth above the step, and the distance from the step to the first wave trough depend exclusively on flow discharge.     

Is quantum mechanics compatible with a deterministic universe? Two interpretations of quantum probabilities

Two problems will be considered: the question of hidden parameters and the problem of Kolmogorovity of quantum probabilities. Both of them will be analyzed from the point of view of two distinct understandings of quantum mechanical probabilities. Our analysis will be focused, as a particular example, on the Aspect-type EPR experiment. It will be shown that the quantum mechanical probabilities appearing in this experiment can be consistently understood as conditional probabilities without any paradoxical consequences. Therefore, nothing implies in the Aspect experiment that quantum theory is incompatible with a deterministic universe.     

真空隔热油管接箍传热实验与模拟研究

真空隔热油管井筒的传热计算是稠油开采领域的重要研究课题.注蒸汽采油井筒内,隔热油管是靠接箍连接在一起的,接箍虽然很短,但其隔热性能较差.目前,隔热油管接箍段引起的散热损失均按经验比例计算,本文对隔热油管接箍的传热进行了深入研究,提出用接箍视导热系数来衡量接箍的隔热性能.并通过现场实验、fluent模拟和理论计算相结合的方法,得到带衬套的接箍视导热系数为0.4 W/(m·K)左右.在实验条件下,接箍散热损失占总散热损失的比例大于1/3.因此,应采用必要措施提高接箍的隔热性能,以保证整个隔热油管的隔热效果.
