Magnetic exchange interactions in tetrabromocuprate compounds

Magnetic and structural data for 28 compounds containing the tetrabromocuprate ion are presented. The parameters which affect the strength and sign of the magnetic superexchange interaction via non-bonding contacts between bromide ions are described and a system for describing the topology of the interaction between tetrahedra is proposed. Analysis of the data suggests that the primary factors affecting the magnetic exchange are the Br?Br distance, the Cu-Br?Br angle and the Cu-Br?Br-Cu dihedral angle.     

Formation of Ad-Layers and Clusters on Condensation of Metal Vapors on Solid Surfaces

Synthesis of organometallic materials can be accomplished in many cases by cocondensation of metal atoms and organic molecules at low temperatures. The reaction kinetics is determined by the competition between metal cluster growth and formation of the organometallic compound. Interesting compounds may contain one or more metal atoms; the latter type could be obtained by reaction between a cluster containing the desired number of metal atoms and an organic molecule. A precise knowledge of the events occurring on condensation of metal atoms and cluster formation can therefore be of value in the control of chemical synthesis. These phenomena have been investigated in connection with the study of the growth of thin metallic films, both experimentally and theoretically. Direct observation of the formation of very small clusters is difficult. The good agreement between experimental results and recent calculations for the development of large clusters, however, allows reliable theoretical conclusions for the first stages of adsorption and cluster formation. The present contribution describes experimental work on film growth and relevant theoretical concepts, and an attempt is made to develop applications to organometallic synthesis.     

The six-membered annulation reaction involving sequential palladium-catalyzed allylic alkylation and Michael addition: scope and limitations

The palladium-catalyzed condensation of a variety of active methylene compounds with methyl 6-acetoxymethyl-hepta-2,6-dienoate was investigated. The six-membered adducts resulting from a η³ palladium complex alkylation-Michael addition sequence were obtained with moderate to good yields. In some cases, further evolution of the primary adduct was observed. The process has been expanded to access nitrogen heterocycles by using sodium p-toluenesulfonamide as the nucleophilic partner.     

Chemo- and regioselectivity in the reactions between highly electrophilic fluorine containing dicarbonyl compounds and amines. Improved synthesis of the corresponding imines/enamines

Chemo- and regioselectivity in the reactions between highly electrophilic fluorine containing dicarbonyl compounds (ethyl 4,4,4-trifluoroacetoacetate, 3,3,3-trifluoropyruvate and 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione) and various benzylamines were systematically studied. The results obtained lead to the development of a generalized and practical method for large-scale synthesis of the corresponding imines/enamines, useful starting materials for preparation fluorinated amines and amino acid.     

The molecular and crystal structures of two diastereomeric 3,4-dihydropyrromethenones

The molecular and crystal structures of the two racemic diastereomeric 3,4-dihydropyrromethenone derivatives1 and2 of configurations (Z) and (E) were determined at 93 K (1, 2) and at room temperature (1). From an analysis of the crystallographically observed temperature coefficients a pseudorotation flexibility of the pyrrolidinone ring in the crystal is deduced. In both compounds a nearly orthogonal arrangement between the two heterocyclic ring systems is observed, which is ascribed to the steric bulk of the substituents in positions 1 and 3 of the pyrrolidinone ring.Herrn Prof.Josef Schurz zum 60. Glass capillary columns for separation of free organic acids

Glass capillary columns have been prepared without acidic additive in the stationary phase, from which free organic acids elute as sharp and symmetrical peaks. The required surface in the borosilicate glass capillary was generated by a combination of leaching with aqueous HCl and deposition of colloidal silica particles; it can be coated with stationary phases have a broad range of polarity. Aqueous samples containing free organic acids can also be analyzed in such columns in an isothermal mode.     

Enantioselective total synthesis of (−)-microcarpalide

The enantioselective total synthesis of the actin-targeting metabolite (−)-microcarpalide is described. Key steps include ring-closing metathesis (RCM) for the final construction of the 10-membered lactone framework and stereoselective homologation of boronic esters for the insertion of all stereocentres with the desired absolute configuration. In particular, the acidic fragment was prepared in seven steps from a suitable chiral bromomethane boronate by means of two sequential stereoselective homologations to install the two stereocentres with the correct final R stereochemistry, employing (−)-pinanediol as the chiral director. Subsequent elaboration to the required C₇ backbone entailed nucleophilic displacement with a vinyl Grignard reagent, oxidative cleavage of the boronic scaffold and protection-deprotection manipulations. Interestingly, when the tribenzyloxy diene ester resulting from DCC-mediated coupling of the two key synthons was subjected to RCM in the presence of Grubbs' catalyst, the reaction proceeded stereoselectively to yield the desired trans oxecin-2-one, albeit with poor conversion.     

Radical trifluoromethylation of ammonium enolates

The easy radical trifluoromethylation of a series of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds with CF₃I is described. The reaction occurs in the presence of a nitrogen base and sodium dithionite in CH₃CN-H₂O solution. Additionally, we report a new access to ammonium triflinates.     

Synthesis of Naturally Occurring Pyrazine and Imidazole Alkaloids from Botryllus LeachiRID=”a”ID=”a”?Dedicated to Prof. G. M?rkl on the occasion of his 75th birthday

The synthesis of the naturally occurring and biologically active alkaloids 1 and 2, first isolated from the red ascidian Botryllus leachi by Duran et al. [1], is described and the structure proposed for Botryllazine B (1) is confirmed. The analytical data for 2-(p-hydroxybenzoyl)-4-(p-hydroxyphenyl)imidazole (2) are discussed and compared with the literature. With special emphasis of ¹H NMR data the tautomerism of aroylimidazolemethanones is described.
