Alginate Properties and Heavy Metal Biosorption by Marine Algae

The physical properties of the alginate component in four different brown seaweeds (Sargassumfluitans, Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus vesiculo-sus, andLaminaria japonica) were characterized using potentiometric titration,¹³C-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), chemical analysis, and viscosity measurements. The heavy metal binding capacities of the corresponding seaweeds were directly proportional to their respective total carboxyl group content, and related to the electronegativity of the elements investigated (Ca, Zn, Cd, Cu, and Pb). The uronic acid composition or sequence of the alginate component did not affect the metal uptake properties of the biosorbents studied here. However, the alginate leaching owing to its solubilization by Na ions was observed to decrease with increasing intrinsic viscosity of the extracted alginate, related to its molecular weight, and with increasing apparent acidic dissociation constant, related to the alginate density inside the biomass.

Concise Synthesis and Antimicrobial Activities of New Substituted 5‐Isoxazolpenicillins

The synthesis of a series of new 5‐isoxazolpenicillins is described, which were obtained by coupling substituted isoxazoles with 6‐APA. Concise large‐scale synthesis of 3,5‐disubstituted isoxazoles by 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition using copper(I) as catalyst was also investigated. Representative compounds were assayed for antimicrobial activities, showing satisfactory antimicrobial activities against Gram‐negative bacteria.     

Ab initio calculations of vibronic activity in phosphorescence microwave double resonance spectra of p-dichlorobenzene

The phosphorescence spectrum of p-dichlorobenzene has been calculated using multiconfiguration self-consistent-field wave functions and the quadratic response technique. Attention has been paid to the intensity distribution of the singlet–triplet (³B_1u¹A_g) transition through a number of vibronic subbands. The second order spin–orbit coupling (SOC) contribution to the spin splitting of the ³B_1u (^3*) state is found to be almost negligible, and the calculations therefore provide a good estimate for the zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters based only on the electron spin–spin coupling expectation values. Nuclear quadrupole resonance constants for the different Cl isotopes are also calculated to accomplish the ZFS assignment. The electric dipole activity of the spin sublevels in the triplet–singlet transitions to the ground-state vibrational levels is estimated by calculations of derivatives using distorted geometries which are shifted from the equilibrium position along different vibrational modes. A vibrational analysis of the phosphorescence spectrum, based on the SOC-induced mixing of the singlet and triplet states calculated along different vibrational modes, provides reasonable agreement with experimental data.Acknowledgment O. Characterization of mesoporous nanocrystalline TiO2 photocatalysts synthesized via a sol-solvothermal process at a low temperature

Nanocrystalline TiO₂ samples with mesoporous structure were prepared via a solvothermal treatment of surfactant-stabilized TiO₂ sols. The samples were obtained from media of different acidities including nitric acid, deionized water, and ammonia (denoted as HT-1, HT-2 and HT-3, respectively). These samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N₂-sorption (BET surface area), micro-Raman spectroscopy, infrared absorption spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic activities of the samples were tested by the self-photosensitized degradation of an azo dye, Mordant Yellow 10 (MY), in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. The results reveal that all three samples have high surface area and are pure anatase phase. The sample prepared in nitric acid medium possesses the most ideal mesoporous structure and also exhibits a blue shift in the Raman spectrum. All three samples show much higher photocatalytic activity than the commercial P-25. The activity order of the three samples is HT-1>HT-2>HT-3.     

Nanostructure Pt Electrode Obtained via Self-assembly of Nanoparticles on Conductive Oxide-coated Glass Substrate

Self-assembly of platinum nanoparticles were applied to fabrication of counter electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells on conductive oxide-coated glass substrate. The present Pt electrode exhibits high exchange current density of 220 mA/cm^2, which is comparable to those prepared by electrodeposition, magnetron sputtering or thermal decomposition of platinum chloride. After analysis by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), it was found that the catalyst was structurally characterized as nanosized platinum metal clusters and was continuously arranged on electrode surface. The present nanostructure electrode had high electrocatalytic activity for the reduction of iodine in organic solution.     

Synthesis and Antiradical Activity of 5-Acetyl-2-alkylthio-4-aryl-6-methyl-1,4-dihydropyridine-3-carboxylic Acid Nitriles

The alkylation of 3-cyano-1,4-dihydropyridine-2(3H)-thiones or the condensation of an aromatic aldehyde, cyanothioacetamide, acetylacetone, and methyl iodide in the presence of piperidine has given a series of novel 5-acetyl-2-alkylthio-4-aryl-6-methyl-1,4-dihydropyridine-3-carboxylic acid nitriles. A compound was obtained from 3,5-di(tert-butyl)-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde in the molecule of which were combined the active part of the antioxidant ionol and a 1,4-dihydropyridine ring. It was found that, among the compounds synthesized, the highest antiradical activity occurred in a compound having two hydroxyl groups in the 4-phenyl substituent.     

1－芳氧基乙酰基－4－邻氯苯甲酰基氨基硫脲衍生物的合成及其生物活性研究

于固－液相转移催化条件下，合成了１０个１－芳氧基乙酰基－４－邻氯苯甲酰基氨基硫脲衍生物，用元素分析、ＩＲ和￣１Ｈ－ＮＭＲ光谱确定了它们的结构。该类化合物对小麦幼苗生长具有明显的促进作用。     

示差脉冲伏安法测定乳酸脱氢酶活性及纳米微粒生物毒性检测新方法研究

采用示差脉冲伏安法，在乳酸脱氢酶(LDH)酶促体系“丙酮酸盐 + NADH +H⁺ (?) 乳酸盐 + NAD⁺”中，通过检测NAD⁺还原峰电流的变化，测定了不同条件下(不同酶用量、缓冲液pH值以及温度)LDH的活性、酶促体系的米氏常数K_m^NADH以及最大反应速率v_max。并且在最佳实验条件下，通过检测LDH活性的改变，实验考察了3种纳米物质(ZnS，TiO₂(R)和TiO₂(A))对乳酸脱氢酶酶促体系的影响。
