A novel and direct synthesis of chroman derivatives using a hypervalent iodine(III) reagent

The direct aromatic carbon-oxygen bond-formation reaction was described and the novel and simple synthetic method for chroman derivatives involving aromatic cation radical intermediates was developed using the hypervalent iodine(III) reagent, phenyliodine(III) bis(trifluoroacetate) (PIFA).     

The use of chiral interaction reagents in the separation of D(−)-and L(+)-ascorbic acid by ion interaction reversed-phase HPLC

Summary An HPLC reversed-phase ion interaction reagent method is presented, which makes use of chiral compounds as the interaction reagents. By employing the optical isomeric forms of malic, tartaric and mandelic acids as the interaction reagents, a good separation of D(−) and L(+) ascorbic acid has been achieved. The method has also been applied to the identification of vitamin C in some medical formulations. The separation of te enantiomeric forms of DL malic acid has been attempted and a shor discussion is presented about the elution sequence in chromatographic separation of D- and L-enantiomers.     

Fundamental aspect and behavior of saturated fluorocarbons in glow discharge in absence of potential source of hydrogen

The glow discharge of a series of saturated fluorocarbons, C_nF_2n+2 (n = 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8), was studied with glass substrates which do not contain any hydrogen. It was found that the deposition rate was a function of the F/C ratio of the starting fluorocarbons. That is, fluorocarbons with higher F/C ratio, such as CF₄ and C₂F₆, hardly polymerized, while fluorocarbons with lower F/C ratio, such as C₈F₁₈, polymerized as well as C₂F₄. After plasma exposure, the surface of glass substrate was characterized by measurements of water contact angle, water droplet rolling-off angle, and ESCA. Although all saturated fluorocarbon plasmas could alter the surface more hydrophobic than before, the deposited materials from fluorocarbons with higher F/C were not stable. Also, in plasmas with high F/C fluorocarbons, i.e., CF₄ and C₂F₆, sputtering of the electrode material was observed. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Unique solvent effects on selective electrochemical fluorination of organic compounds

Recent studies on solvent effects on electrochemical partial fluorination are reviewed. At first, the historical background and some problems of electrochemical fluorination in organic solvents like acetonitrile (MeCN) are briefly mentioned. Ethereal solvents like dimethoxyethane (DME) and a mixture of DME and MeCN were found to improve both the yield and current efficiency for electrochemical fluorination since these solvent systems effectively suppress anode passivation and overoxidation of fluorinated products once formed during the electrolysis. It was also found that DME stabilizes radical cationic intermediates of 4-arylthio-1,3-dioxolan-2-ones and 3-phenylthiophthalide leading to α-fluorination while dichloromethane (CH₂Cl₂) destabilizes them leading to fluorodesulfurization. On the other hand, imidazolium ionic liquids and liquid fluoride salts like Et₄NF·4HF and Et₃N·5HF exhibited similar effects to CH₂Cl₂. Selective fluorination of hardly oxidizable phthalide was also achieved using a combination of two kinds of ionic liquids (imidazolium triflate and liquid fluoride salts).

The preparation of α,α-difluoropropargylphosphonates

The organometallic reagent, (EtO)₂P(O)CF₂ZnBr, reacts with 1-alkynyl halides (halide=Br, I) in the presence of Cu(I)Br to give good yields of α,α-difluoropropargylphosphonates via a one pot reaction.
