Cycle Action on Treelike Structures

The purpose of this paper is to study the action on cycles of several known classes of oligomorphic groups, that is, infinite permutation groups of countable degree having only finitely many orbits on k-sets for each k. The groups studied here are all related to trees and treelike relational structures. The sequence whose k-th term is the number of orbits in the action on k-cycles is called Parker sequence. It turns out that, if we are dealing with the automorphism group of a suitable relational structure, this sequence counts also the finite substructures admitting a cyclic automorphism; in calculating these sequences for various groups, we shall thus describe and enumerate such substructures.Di più dirò: ch'a gli alberi dà vita spirito uman che sente e che ragiona. A new construction of semi-free actions on Menger manifolds

A new construction of semi-free actions on Menger manifolds is presented. As an application we prove a theorem about simultaneous coexistence of countably many semi-free actions of compact metric zero-dimensional groups with the prescribed fixed-point sets: Let be a compact metric zero-dimensional group, represented as the direct product of subgroups , a -manifold and (resp., ) its pseudo-interior (resp., pseudo-boundary). Then, given closed subsets of , there exists a -action on such that (1) and are invariant subsets of ; and (2) each is the fixed point set of any element .

     

On the Stability of Diagonal Actions

In the note it is proved that, for an arbitrary action of a semisimple group G on an affine variety X, there is a positive integer n such that the diagonal action (m copies) is stable for any .     

Limiting Cases of a Superstring in AdS5×S5

The superstring action in AdS ₅×S ⁵ depends on two parameters: the inverse string tension and the radius R. The standard AdS/CFT correspondence requires that the string action depend on only the combination . After reviewing previous work on the light-cone superstring, we derive the explicit form of the action at =0. Its zero-mode part coincides with the superparticle action in AdS ₅×S ⁵, and the =0 string spectrum, as expected, must therefore include the protected type-IIB supergravity states. Following recent suggestions, we conjecture that such a tensionless string spectrum must also contain higher-spin massless states in AdS ₅. We also discuss the case of another parameterization of the string action that admits the straightforward flat-space limit R, but the limits R0 and are not equivalent in this case. The limit R0 then corresponds to shrinking S ⁵ to the size zero, simultaneously freezing the fluctuations of the radial coordinate of AdS ₅. This case results in a nonstandard AdS/CFT correspondence picture.     

Laser Annealing of SiO2 Glass with Copper Nanoparticles

Composite layers formed in SiO₂ by implantation of 50keV Cu⁺ ions with a dose of 8·10¹⁶ cm^–2 at an ion current density of 10 A/cm² have been investigated. It is shown that ion implantation carried out under the chosen conditions allows one to synthesize copper nanoparticles in the surface region of a dielectric. The exposure of composites to highpower pulses of an excimer krypton laser at a wavelength in the SiO₂ transmission region has been investigated. In the absence of effective optical absorption by a glass substrate, the dynamics of the change in the structure of the layer with metallic nanoparticles is determined by the number of laser pulses. It has been established that at the initial stage of pulsed irradiation fragmentation of the largest nanoparticles occurs followed by the inverse process of their agglomeration as a result of slight heating of the glass matrix; further exposure to the laser irradiation leads to an effective accumulation of energy in the particles and, as a consequence, to their melting and dissociation into small clusters and individual atoms.     

Equivariant Kasparov Theory and Generalized Homomorphisms

Let G be a locally compact group. We describe elements of KK ^G (A, B) by equivariant homomorphisms, following Cuntz's treatment in the non-equivariant case. This yields another proof for the universal property of KK ^G : It is the universal split exact stable homotopy functor. To describe a Kasparov triple (, , F) for A, B by an equivariant homomorphism, we have to arrange for the Fredholm operator F to be equivariant. This can be done if A is of the form ; and more generally if the group action on A is proper in the sense of Exel and Rieffel.     

Judgment in crossing a road between objects coming in the opposite lane

When cars are oncoming in the opposite lane of a road, a driver is able to judge whether his/her car can cross the road at an intersection without a collision with the oncoming cars. We developed a model for the human judgment used to cross a road between oncoming objects. In the model, in order to make the judgment to cross the road, the human visual system compares the time interval it takes for an oncoming object to pass the observer with the time interval it takes for the observer to cross the road. We conducted a psychophysical experiment to test the model prediction. The result showed that human performance is in good agreement with the theoretical consequence provided by the model, suggesting that the human visual system uses not only the visually timed information of the approaching object but also the timed information of self-action for the judgment about crossing the road.

Adsorption behavior of water soluble polymers with lower critical solution temperature

The adsorption behavior of hydroxylpropyl cellulose (HPC), ethyl hydroxylethyl cellulose (EHEC) and poly-vinylalcohol (PVA) polymers, which have a lower critical solution temperature (LCST), have been studied in comparison with the behavior of hydroxylethyl cellulose (HEC) with no LCST. The saturated amount of adsorption (A _s ) for the polymers with LCST depended significantly on the adsorption temperature and theA _s , e. g., for HPC obtained at the LCST, the amount was 1.5 times as large as the value at room temperature. The highA _s values obtained at the LCST were maintained over a long period at room temperature, and the dense adsorption layer formed on the latex particles at the LCST showed a strong protective action against flocculation. Furthermore, the effect of the surface nature of the adsorbent on the polymer adsorption at the LCST has been investigated using six kinds of synthetic latices with different surface natures. It was found that the hydrophobic interaction between the polymer and the adsorbent plays an important role in inducing the adsorption, and the trend of increasing the hydrophilic character of the latex surface prevents the formation of the adsorption layer of the polymer.
