Isodon enanderianus (Hand. -Mazz.) H. W. Li, has been used in folk medicine as anti-inflammatory and detoxified agent1. The Isodon genus is known to be rich in ent-kaurane diterpenoids, a series of new ent-kaurane diterpenoids have been isolated from the dried leaves of I. enanderianus2-4. Study of alkaloids of the Siberian and altai flora

A number of known allied diterpene alkaloids were isolated fromDelphinium retropilosum Sambuk, a species growing in the Altai Territory. Synthesis of new 2-oxosparteine derivatives

For the first time, substituents to the 3-position of 2-oxosparteine have been introduced. The synthesis of 3-phenylthiolupanine, 3,3-di(phenylthio)lupanine, 3-dehydrolupanine, 3-bromodehydro-lupanine and 2-thiono-3-dehydrosparteine has been described. The stereochemistry of these compounds has been determined and by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.     

Investigation of the effect of berberines alkaloids in <Emphasis Type="Italic">Coptis chinensis</Emphasis> Franch on <Emphasis Type="Italic">Bacillus shigae</Emphasis> growthby microcalorimetry

The inhibitory effects of five berberines alkaloids (BAs) from rhizoma of Coptis chinensis Franch, a traditional Chinese medicinal (TCM) herb, on Bacillus shigae (B. shigae) growth were investigated by microcalorimetry. The power-time curves of B. shigae with and without BAs were acquired; meanwhile, the extent and duration of inhibitory effects on the metabolism were evaluated by growth rate constants (k1, k2), half inhibitory ratio (IC50), maximum heat output (Pmax), and peak time (tp). The values of k1 and k2 of B. shigae in the presence of the five BAs decreased with the increasing concentrations of BAs. Moreover, Pmax was reduced, and the value of tp increased with increasing concentrations of the five drugs. The inhibitory activity varied with different drugs. IC50 of the five BAs was respectively 75 μg/mL for berberine, 90 μg/mL for coptisine, 115 μg/mL for palmatine, 220 μg/mL for epiberberine, and 400 μg/mL for jatrorrhizine. The sequence of antimicrobial activity of the five BAs berberine ＞ coptisine ＞ palmatine ＞ epiberberine ＞ jatrorrhizine. The functional groups methylenedioxy at C2 and C3 on phenyl ring improve antimicrobial activity more strongly than methoxyl at C2 and C3 on phenyl ring. However, the effect of bacteriostasis is not significant with methylenedioxy or methoxyl at C9 and C10 on phenyl ring.     

Straightforward access to new vinca-alkaloids via selective reduction of a nitrile containing anhydrovinblastine derivative

A procedure to exclusively obtain 3′S-cyanoanhydrovinblastine 12 from two naturally occurring vinca-alkaloids (catharanthine and vindoline) in one step with good yield is described. Stereoselective reductions of 12, providing straightforward access to three new vinca-alkaloids, including two diastereomers 3′S-cyano-(4′R,5′-dihydro)-anhydrovinblastine and 3′S-cyano-(4′S,5′-dihydro)-anhydrovinblastine as well as (3′S-aminomethyl)-(4′S,5′-dihydro)-anhydrovinblastine in good yields is also reported.     

Synthesis of marine alkaloids leucettamines B and C by β-lactam ring rearrangement

A new method for the synthesis of marine alkaloids leucettamines B and C from Leucetta sp. sponges is described. The key step is the base-promoted rearrangement of β-lactam into imidazolone ring. Leucettamines B and C as well as their N-benzoyl derivatives were obtained in high yields. Single-crystal structures of both leucettamines B and C were determined by X-ray diffraction confirming Z-configuration of double bond at 4-position of imidazolone.     

Quantitative analysis of boldine alkaloid in natural extracts by cyclic voltammetry at a liquid-liquid interface and validation of the method by comparison with high performance liquid chromatography

The quantitative determination of boldine alkaloid in boldo leaf extracts by employing cyclic voltammetry, at a liquid/liquid interface as well as the validation of this methodology against the reference method, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), are reported in the present paper. The voltammetric analysis was performed successfully and economically using two kinds of liquid/liquid interfaces: water/1,2-dicholoroethane and water/PVC (polyvinyl chloride)-gelled 1,2-dichloroethane. Linear calibration curves in the concentration range of 1.04 × 10⁻⁵ mol L⁻¹ to 5.19 × 10⁻⁴ mol L⁻¹ were obtained with a detection limit equal to (6.1 ± 0.7) × 10⁻⁵ mol L⁻¹ and the quantitative determination of this alkaloid, in complex matrixes such as boldo leaf extracts, by the electrochemical technique proposed was found to be equal to the values obtained using the standard HPLC method. The validation analysis of this methodology against HPLC demonstrated that accuracy, linearity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), specificity and precision are acceptable. The electroanalytical technique proposed is economical and selective, involves simple equipment and can be applied for the quantitative determination of boldine alkaloid in complex matrixes such as leaf extracts without special drug separation. Moreover, cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments applied at the liquid/liquid interface under different experimental conditions allowed us to study the transfer mechanism of boldine, and determine a value of pK_a^w = 6.90 for protonated boldine, from the variation of voltammetric peak current with pH.     

Three New Monoterpene Alkaloids and a New Caffeic Acid Ester from Incarvillea mairei var. multifoliolata

Three new monoterpene alkaloids, mairine A ( 1 ), mairine B ( 2 ), and mairine C ( 3 ), and a new caffeic acid ester, 2‐(1‐hydroxy‐4,4‐dimethoxycyclohexyl)ethyl caffeate ( 4 ), were isolated from the EtOH extract of the whole plants of Incarvillea mairei var. multifoliolata. The structures of these compounds were established on the basis of 1D‐ and 2D‐NMR and HR‐ESI‐MS analysis.     

New Guaipyridine Sesquiterpene Alkaloids from Artemisia rupestris L.

Three new guaipyridine sesquiterpene alkaloids, rupestine A, B, C ( 1 – 3 , resp.), and the new nor‐sesquiterpne alkaloid rupestine D ( 4 ) were obtained from the flowers of Artemisia rupestris L. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of sepectroscopic data and by comparison with those of the related compounds reported in the literature. In addition, the absolute configurations of 2 and 4 were determined by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analyses.
