Obtaining 4-vinylphenols by decarboxylation of natural 4-hydroxycinnamic acids under microwave irradiation

4-Vinylphenols, useful compounds for industrial applications, were obtained by decarboxylation of 4-hydroxycinnamic acids under microwave irradiation in the presence of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) as base and basic aluminum oxide as solid support. The reactions were fast (15-30 min). The selective extraction of the final products with ethyl acetate avoids chromatographic purifications. The conversions are quantitative and the yields are satisfactory. Only the unstable 4-vinylcatechol was obtained in moderate yield. This procedure was successfully extended to a natural sample of ferulic acid extracted from wheat bran to get the corresponding 4-vinylguaiacol, a FEMA GRAS (Flavor and Extract Manufacturer's Association; General Regarded as Safe) approved flavoring agent.     

Application of x-ray fluorescence analysis to investigation of the composition of gunshot residues

We have used x-ray fluorescence analysis to study the elemental composition of gunshot residues from smooth-bore and rifled-bore guns. We have established that it is possible to differentiate between types of projectiles (jacketed/lead), types of primers (corrosive/noncorrosive), and types of propellant powders (black/smokeless) by analysis of the elemental composition of the gunshot residues. We have shown that the mercury content in gunshot residues on the surface of the object carrying the residues steadily decreases as storage time increases. Despite this fact, mercury can be preserved as a component of gunshot residues on the object (cotton cloth) under room conditions for more than 45 days. __________ Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Spektroskopii, Vol. 73, No. 3, pp. 320–325, May–June, 2006.     

Integral-Type Darboux Transformations for the mKdV Hierarchy with Self-Consistent Sources

We present integral-type Darboux transformation for the mKdV hierarchy and for the mKdV hierarchy withself-consistent sources. In contrast with the normal Darboux transformation, the integral-type Darboux transformationscan offer non-auto-Backlund transformation between two (2n 1)-th mKdV equations with self-consistent sources withdifferent degrees. This kind of Darboux transformation enables us to construct the N-soliton solution for the mKdVhierarchy with self-consistent sources. We also propose the formulas for the m times repeated integral-type Darbouxtransformations for both mKdV hierarchy and mKdV hierarchy with self-consistent sources.     

A Numerical Calculation for Electron Impact Excitation of Copper

The scattering of electrons by atomic copper has been studied using Born approximation and the concept of the generalized oscillator strength (GOS). Differential and total cross-sections for the excitation of the 3d¹⁰ 4p² P state are calculated at incident energies of 100 eV and are compared with other available experimental and theoretical data. The agreement between our calculation for the differential cross-section and the available experimental results is fairly good at the forward angles, while the agreement at large angles is poor. The calculated total cross-sections are compared with the experimental data and those predicted by several theories. It is found that our calculation for the total cross-sections are in a good agreement with the close coupling calculation of Msezane and Henry (1986a, Physical Review A 33, 1631) for incident energies greater than 20 eV. The integrated cross-section measurements of Ismail and Teubner (1995, Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics 28, 4164) are in good agreement with the present calculation.     

Global existence and blow-up of solutions to a parabolic system with nonlocal sources and boundaries

This paper deals with a semi-linear parabolic system with nonlinear nonlocal sources and nonlocal boundaries.By using super-and sub-solution techniques,we first give the sufficient conditions that the classical solution exists globally and blows up in a finite time respectively,and then give the necessary and sufficient conditions that two components u and v blow up simultaneously.Finally,the uniform blow-up profiles in the interior are presented.

Electrophoretic study of the effect of ultradisperse iron powder on cotton seed proteins

The protein composition of seeds treated with a suspension of ultradisperse iron was studied using electrophoresis on PAAG. The dehydration of copper(II) acetate monohydrate

The thermal dehydration of copper(II) acetate hydrate has been studied between 353 and 406 K, over a range of humidities. The dehydration is controlled by nucleation-and-growth kinetics at low temperatures, with an activation energy of 154 kJ·mol⁻¹, which changes to contracting-disc kinetics at higher temperatures with a lower activation energy of 76 kJ·mol⁻¹. Frequency factors have also been derived; the value for the high temperature process is low (10⁷s⁻¹) and that for the low temperature step is high (10¹⁷s⁻¹). Optical microscopy has been used to clarify the bulk kinetics; there is evidence for a reactive layer at the surface of the decomposing solid. In celebration of the 60^th birthday of Dr Andrew K. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering study of polymer on metals. III. Chemisorbed polybenzimidazole and its corrosion-inhibiting properties at high temperature

Chemisorption of polybenzimidazole on silver and copper etched with nitric acid has been observed by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The polymer is found to react chemically with silver, forming a complexed film on the surface. The SERS spectra show that polybenzimidazole film inhibits oxidation of the metal at high temperature, unlike chemisorbed benzimidazole, benzotriazole, and poly(4-vinyl pyridine). © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Complex point sources in probe-corrected cylindrical near-field scanning

A probe-corrected theory based on complex point sources is presented for computing the acoustic field of an arbitrary finite source from measurements of the near field on a cylindrical scanning surface. The complex point sources are used both as basis functions for the expansion of the field outside the scan cylinder and for the representation of the probe. The resulting probe-corrected formulas are considerably simpler than the standard probe-corrected formulas based on cylindrical waves. The new formulation makes simulations of near-field scanning systems much less computationally intensive than simulations based on standard theory. The complex point-source theory is validated through numerical examples involving a baffled circular piston transducer probe.
