In this study, we successfully synthesized single-phase hexagonal closed packed (HCP) and face-centered cubic (FCC) nickel nanoparticles via reduction of nickel nitrate hexahydrate and nickel acetate tetrahydrate, respectively, in polyethylene glycol-200. Structural information of the as-synthesized nickel nanoparticles are studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) as a function of the molar concentration of the nickel precursor. XRD results reveal that low concentrations of nickel precursor (0.005?M and below) favor the HCP, while high concentrations favor the mixture of HCP and FCC crystal structures. Particle size of HCP structure is found in the range of ~15?nm via transmission electron microscope analysis. Vibratory sample magnetometer is employed to study its magnetic behavior and the results reveal that FCC crystalline phase shows ferromagnetic nature with high saturation magnetization (M s?~?39.6?emu?gm?1) as compared to metastable HCP crystalline structure (M s?~?2?emu?gm?1). The application of chemical‐modified gold nanoparticles (GNPs) as chiral selector for the enantioseparation based on pseudostationary phase‐CEC (PSP‐CEC) is presented. GNPs modified by thiolated β‐CD were characterized by NMR and FT‐IR. The nanoparticle size was determined to be of 9.5 nm (+2.5 nm) by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and UV spectra. Four pairs of dinitrophenyl‐labeled amino acid enantiomers (DL‐Val, Leu, Glu and Asp) and three pairs of drug enantiomers (RS‐chlorpheniramine, zopiclone and carvedilol) were analyzed by using modified GNPs as the chiral selector in PSP‐CEC. Good theoretical plate number (up to 2.4×105 per meter) and separation resolution (up to 4.7) were obtained even with low concentration of modified GNPs (0.8–1.4 mg/mL). The corresponding concentration of β‐CD in the buffer was only 0.30?0.53 mM, which was much lower than the optimum concentration of 15 mM if pure β‐CD was used as chiral selector. Our results showed that thiolated β‐CD modified GNPs have more sufficient interaction with the analytes, resulting in significant enhancement of enantioseparation. By utilizing adsorption phase synthesis (APS), Au nanoparticles were prepared on the surface of SiO2 with or without modification by Ni(OH)2. TEM, XRD, and UV‐vis were employed to characterize the morphology of Au particles on the surface of two kinds of supports. The results showed that the average size of Au particles on the SiO2 surface modified by Ni(OH)2 was less than 5 nm. Due to high surface isoelectric point, Au particles formed in the adsorption layer were prone to distribute on the surface of SiO2 modified by Ni(OH)2. Atom transfer radical emulsion polymerization of styrene using PEG‐Cl as macroinitiator under microwave irradiation was successfully conducted and monodispersed nanoparticles were prepared. The PEG‐Cl macroinitiator was synthesized, and confirmed by FTIR spectrum. The structure of the PEG‐b‐PSt diblock copolymer was characterized by 1H‐NMR and the number of styrene unit in the diblock copolymer was calculated. The morphology, size, and size distribution of the nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS). The effects of the ratio of macroinitiator and monomer, the ratio of catalyst and macroinitiator on the size and size distribution of nanoparticles were investigated. It was found that the diameters of PEG‐b‐PSt nanoparticles prepared under microwave irradiation were smaller (<50 nm) and more monodispersed than those prepared with conventional heating. Moreover, with the increasing of the ratio of St/PEG‐Cl, the hydrodynamic diameters (Dh) of the nanoparticles increased and the poly index decreased, both Dh and poly index of the nanoparticles prepared under microwave irradiation were smaller then those prepared with conventional heating; as the concentration of catalyst increased, the Dh of the nanoparticles decreased and the poly index of the nanoparticles increased. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
