A numerical analysis of the flow pattern in the inlet region of a circular pipe rotating steadily about an axis parallel to its own is presented. Both finite cell and finite element methods are used to analyse the problem and they give qualitatively similar results which show that a swirling fluid motion is induced in the pipe inlet region. The analyses show that the direction of swirl is opposite to that of the pipe rotation when viewed along the flow axis and that its magnitude depends on the speed of pipe rotation and throughflow Reynolds number. Neither numerical analysis predicts the marked upturn in friction factor (or pressure drop) which has been observed experimentally. Since considerable expansion of hematopoietic marrow occurs in patients with sickle cell anemia (SCA), magnetic resonance images of 20 hips in 10 patients with known homozygous SCA were reviewed to determine a) if low signal hematopoietic marrow extended into the femoral capital epiphysis and b) if the MR characteristics of avascular necrosis (AVN) differed depending on the type of epiphyseal marrow. Our results revealed variable epiphyseal marrow type; mixed (fatty and hematopoietic) marrow (42%), fatty marrow (32%), hematopoietic marrow (16%) and hemosiderotic marrow (10%). AVN occurred irrespective of the underlying marrow. Segmental areas of low signal intensity in variable shapes (ring, band, crescent or large homogeneous area) was the most consistent MR manifestation of AVN in SCA. A low signal intensity peripheral rim surrounding a central zone, isointense with epiphyseal marrow on T1 and T2 weighted images, was most frequently observed similar to that described in patients without hemoglobinopathy. The notable difference, however, was of segmental areas within the same femoral head that demonstrated variable central zone signal on T2 weighted images. Further, while an increase in hip joint fluid is commonly seen with both early and advanced AVN in patients without hemoglobinopathy; it was increased in only one hip in patients with SCA. The observed differences in MR characteristics may be due to different pathophysiology of AVN in patients with SCA. 相似文献

The aim of the present paper is to examine the effect of a quasi-periodic gravitational modulation on the onset of convective instability in Hele-Shaw cell. The quasi-periodic modulation considered here consists in a modulation having two incommensurate frequencies. This study is an extension of a previous work by Aniss et al. [Asymptotic study of the convective parametric instability in Hele-Shaw cell, Phys. Fluids 12 (2) (2000) 262-268] in which only a periodic gravitational modulation was considered. We have shown that for Pr=O(1) or Pr?1, the gravitational modulation has no effect on the convective threshold as expected. Treatment of early passage human fetal gastric fibrohlasts with ultraviolet (UV) light and the chemical carcinogen ethyl nitrosourea (ENU) in succession resulted in an immortally growing cell line, named GTS 8502. The cells of this line display typical transformation characteristics, such as irregularly shaped nuclei, heteroploidization of karyotype and frequent appearance of heteromorphic chromosomes, the enhanced volume ratio of nucleus to cytoplasm, multinucleoli, appearance of microvilli on the surface of the cells and agglutination reaction to lectin concanavalin A. The transformants have high growing and mitotic indices and the ability of focus-formation on monolayers and anchorage independent growth in soft agar medium. Moreover, these cells induced turnouts in nude mice or in immunosuppressed new-born rats through heterotransplantation. The monomer and intermolecular charge-transfer complexes of 13 different quinoline derivatives with diiodine were studied using ab initio molecular orbital (MO) and density functional theory (DFT) methods. Calculations revealed that the sigma* orbital of iodine interacts with the nitrogen lone pair in the quinoline ring. The open-circuit photovoltage (V(oc)) values of an Ru(II) complex dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO(2) solar cell with an I(-)/I(3) (-) redox electrolyte in acetonitrile using quinoline additives were compared to the computational calculations on the intermolecular interaction between quinolines and I(2). The optimized geometries, frequency analyses, Mulliken population analyses, natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses, and interaction energies indicate that the V(oc) value of the solar cell is higher when quinoline complexes more favorably interact with I(2). Therefore, the interaction between the quinoline additives and iodine redox electrolyte is an important factor for controlling dye-sensitized solar cell performance. 相似文献
