Abstract Sub-millimetric synthetic, continuous, and pulsed-jet actuators under identical conditions of generation are experimentally compared. Particle image velocimetry and hot-wire anemometry were used for measuring the velocity field. In the second part of the article, the interaction of these three types of actuators with a transverse external flow is characterized using the same experimental techniques. The studied plate is bended downstream from the actuator. Two angles are studied—0° and 28°. The efficiency of the fluidic action on the reattachment of the boundary layer is shown to be strongly dependant on the type of the jet. 相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to determine the effects of different pollution standards on the firm's resource allocation decisions. To do so, a dynamic model of the firm is developed in which it is assumed that production causes pollution as an inevitable byproduct. Concerning its investment policy, we suppose that the firm can choose between investing in productive capital goods and investing in abatement efforts.It is shown that, in some cases, future abatement expenses have a negative impact on the present level of productive investment, even if the pollution standard is not binding at the moment. This implies a really dynamic optimal investment policy for the firm, which cannot be obtained within a comparative static analysis.This research has been made possible by a fellowship of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. In this paper, we revisit aspects of the multi-armed bandit problem in the earlier work (Ref. 1). An alternative proof of the optimality of the Gittins index rule is derived under the discounted reward criterion. The proof does not involve an explicit use of the interchange argument. The ideas of the proof are extended to derive the asymptotic optimality of the index rule under the average reward criterion. Problems involving superprocesses and arm-acquiring bandits are also reexamined. The properties of an optimal policy for an arm-acquiring bandit are discussed.This research was supported by NSF Grant IRI-91-20074. 相似文献

A manufacturing system with two tandem machines producing one part type is considered in this work. The machines are unreliable, each having two states, up and down. Both surplus controls and Kanban systems are considered. Algorithms for approximating the optimal threshold values are developed. First, perturbation analysis techniques are employed to obtain consistent gradient estimates based on a single simulation run. Then, iterative algorithms of the stochastic optimization type are constructed. It is shown that the algorithms converge to the optimal threshold values in an appropriate sense. Zero-sum stochastic games with countable state space and with finitely many moves available to each player in a given state are treated. As a function of the current state and the moves chosen, player I incurs a nonnegative cost and player II receives this as a reward. For both the discounted and average cost cases, assumptions are given for the game to have a finite value and for the existence of an optimal randomized stationary strategy pair. In the average cost case, the assumptions generalize those given in Sennott (1993) for the case of a Markov decision chain. Theorems of Hoffman and Karp (1966) and Nowak (1992) are obtained as corollaries. Sufficient conditions are given for the assumptions to hold. A flow control example illustrates the results. 相似文献

Stochastic control for systems with an unknown parameter is considered in this paper. The underlying problem is to minimize a functional subject to a system described by a singularly perturbed differential equation with an unknown parameter process driven by fast fluctuating random disturbances. This problem arises in the context of stochastic adaptive control, adaptive signal processing, and failure-prone manufacturing systems. Due to the nature of the wide-bandwidth noise processes, identifying the parameter process for eacht is very hard since the driving noise changes very rapidly. An alternative approach is used, and an auxiliary control problem is introduced to overcome the difficulties. In this paper, we consider a minimax problem of optimal control for a class of strongly nonlinear uncertain evolution equations on a Banach space. We prove the existence of optimal controls. Consider a two-station queueing network with two types of jobs: type 1 jobs visit station 1 only, while type 2 jobs visit both stations in sequence. Each station has a single server. Arrival and service processes are modeled as counting processes with controllable stochastic intensities. The problem is to control the arrival and service processes, and in particular to schedule the server in station 1 among the two job types, in order to minimize a discounted cost function over an infinite time horizon. Using a stochastic intensity control approach, we establish the optimality of a specific stationary policy, and show that its value function satisfies certain properties, which lead to a switching-curve structure. We further classify the problem into six parametric cases. Based on the structural properties of the stationary policy, we establish the optimality of some simple priority rules for three of the six cases, and develop heuristic policies for the other three cases. 相似文献
