ABSTRACTA series of novel azobenzene chiral liquid crystals (Mt4AZOnB) containing (-)-menthyl were successfully synthesised. Terminal alkyl chains of the molecules varied from methyl to hexyl. The chemical structures were characterised by Fourier transform infrared and 1H-NMR spectra. Liquid crystalline behaviour of the chiral liquid crystals was characterised by differential scanning calorimetry and polarising optical microscopy. The effect of terminal alkyl chains on mesomorphic and photoisomerisation behaviour of azobenzene-based liquid crystals is discussed. The lower members (n = 1, 2, 3, 4) are monotropic and only the higher members (n = 5, 6) show enantiotropic behaviour. These compounds show a distinct odd-even effect for the phase transition temperature when the parity of the terminal chain is varied. 相似文献

Summary: A microscopic theory is proposed to describe light-induced deformation of photo-sensitive elastomers bearing azobenzene chromophores in their strands. We use an orientation approach in which it is assumed that the light-induced deformation is caused by reorientation of azobenzene chromophores with respect to the electric vector of the linearly polarized light, E , due to the trans-cis-trans photoisomerizaion process whose efficiency depends on the orientation of the chromophores with respect to the vector E . In the framework of the Gaussian approximation for elasticity of network strands it is shown that the value of the light-induced deformation depends on the chemical structure of network strands, namely, on the orientation distribution of chromophores around the main chains which is related to the length and elasticity of spacers. Depending on the chemical structure, azobenzene elastomers can demonstrate expansion or uniaxial contraction along the vector E , as well as non-monotonic deformation with increasing light intensity (expansion at small light intensities and contraction at high ones). 相似文献

The new chromophore molecules with nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were prepared by Knoevenagel condensation from 1,8-dimethoxy-4,5-diformyl-9,10-dihydroanthracene and isophorone derivative in the presence of piperidine and acetic acid. In these chromophore, the ring-locked trienes were employed as the conjugation bridge and electron acceptor in D-π-A units. The key intermediate dialdehyde was conveniently prepared via a three step reaction, in which 1,8-dimethoxyanthraquinone was reduced with zinc/acetic acid and sodium/ethanol successively, followed by formylation with 1,1-dichlorodimethyl ether in the presence of TiCI4. The solvatochromism and UV spectra indicate that they have higher second-order nonlinear hyperpolarizability μβ values than the corresponding reference compound, without red shift of the charge transfer band. 相似文献

Two new functional polyacetylenes bearing different azobenzene group, -{ HC=C[azo-N (CH3)CH2CH2OH] } n-, [poly(EHAB); azo = 4,4'-azobenzene] and - { HC=C[azo-N(CH3)CH2CH2O COC3H7]},-, [poly(EEAB)]} were prepared by [Rh(nbd)Cl]2-Et3N catalysts. Poly(EHAB) has poor solubility while poly(EEAB) can be dissolved in common solvent. The polymers were characterized by FHR, ^1H NMR, UV and GPC. The nonlinear optical property of the soluble poly(EEAB) was investigated with 8 ns width pulse at 532 nm by Z-scan technique. We have studied the possibility of recording holograms in films of the 4-methacroyloxy-(4′-carboxy-3′-hydroxy)-2-chloroazobenzene
polycomplex with cobalt, with parallel and orthogonal orientation of the light beam polarization. We have shown that these
films can be used as recording media for polarization holography. The characteristic features of relaxation of the diffraction
efficiency of the holograms are connected with cistrans isomerization of the azobenzene groups and the characteristic features
of structural rearrangement in the polymer matrix. We hypothesize that the information-related characteristics of the studied
recording media can be controlled by external electric or magnetic fields, due to the presence of magnetic metal ions within
the polymer film.
