On Fučik Spectra and Periodic Solutions

In this paper, we continue extending the theory of boundary-value problems to ordinary differential equations and inclusions with discontinuous right-hand side. To this end, we construct a new version of the method of shifts along trajectories. We compare the results obtained by the new approach and those obtained by the method of Fuik spectra.     

Spectral and Pseudospectral Approximations Using Hermite Functions: Application to the Dirac Equation

We consider in this paper spectral and pseudospectral approximations using Hermite functions for PDEs on the whole line. We first develop some basic approximation results associated with the projections and interpolations in the spaces spanned by Hermite functions. These results play important roles in the analysis of the related spectral and pseudospectral methods. We then consider, as an example of applications, spectral and pseudospectral approximations of the Dirac equation using Hermite functions. In particular, these schemes preserve the essential conservation property of the Dirac equation. We also present some numerical results which illustrate the effectiveness of these methods.     

Unified Treatment of Algebraic and Geometric Difference by a New Difference Scheme and its Continuity Properties

We introduce a new operation for the difference of two sets A and C of R ⁿ depending on a parameter . This new operation may yield as special cases the classical difference and the Minkowski difference, if the sets A and C are closed, convex sets, if int(C) is nonempty, and if A or C bounded. Continuity properties with respect to both the operands and the parameter of this operation are studied. Lipschitz properties of the Minkowski difference between two sets of a normed vector space are proved in the bounded case as well as in the unbounded case without condition on the dimension of the space.     

Non-compact generalized variational inequalities for quasi-monotone and hemi-continuous operators with applications

Some results are obtained for non-compact cases in topological vector spaces for the existence problem of solutions for some set-valued variational inequalities with quasi-monotone and lower hemi-continuous operators, and with quasi-semi-monotone and upper hemi-continuous operators. Some applications are given in non-reflexive Banach spaces for these existence problems of solutions and for perturbation problems for these set-valued variational inequalities with quasi-monotone and quasi-semi-monotone operators. Detecting Mass Points of Representing Measures

We discuss a possibility of deciding whether measures representing a moment sequence or realizing orthogonality of polynomials have atoms. This is done on the real line and in several variables.

Nonparametric estimation of distributions with categorical and continuous data

In this paper we consider the problem of estimating an unknown joint distribution which is defined over mixed discrete and continuous variables. A nonparametric kernel approach is proposed with smoothing parameters obtained from the cross-validated minimization of the estimator's integrated squared error. We derive the rate of convergence of the cross-validated smoothing parameters to their ‘benchmark’ optimal values, and we also establish the asymptotic normality of the resulting nonparametric kernel density estimator. Monte Carlo simulations illustrate that the proposed estimator performs substantially better than the conventional nonparametric frequency estimator in a range of settings. The simulations also demonstrate that the proposed approach does not suffer from known limitations of the likelihood cross-validation method which breaks down with commonly used kernels when the continuous variables are drawn from fat-tailed distributions. An empirical application demonstrates that the proposed method can yield superior predictions relative to commonly used parametric models.     

Regularity of Pressure in the Neighbourhood of Regular Points of Weak Solutions of the Navier-Stokes Equations

In the context of the weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations we study the regularity of the pressure and its derivatives in the space-time neighbourhood of regular points. We present some global and local conditions under which the regularity is further improved.     

Parallel Newton Two-Stage Multisplitting Iterative Methods for Nonlinear Systems

Parallel Newton two-stage iterative methods to solve nonlinear systems are studied. These algorithms are based on both the multisplitting technique and the two-stage iterative methods. Convergence properties of these methods are studied when the Jacobian matrix is either monotone or an H-matrix. Furthermore, in order to illustrate the performance of the algorithms studied, computational results about these methods on a distributed memory multiprocessor are discussed.This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.
