Exploring Regioselective Bond Cleavage and Cross‐Coupling Reactions using a Low‐Valent Nickel Complex

Recently, esters have received much attention as transmetalation partners for cross‐coupling reactions. Herein, we report a systematic study of the reactivity of a series of esters and thioesters with [{(dtbpe)Ni}₂(μ‐η²:η²‐C₆H₆)] (dtbpe=1,2‐bis(di‐tert‐butyl)phosphinoethane), which is a source of (dtbpe)nickel(0). Trifluoromethylthioesters were found to form η²‐carbonyl complexes. In contrast, acetylthioesters underwent rapid C_acyl?S bond cleavage followed by decarbonylation to generate methylnickel complexes. This decarbonylation could be pushed backwards by the addition of CO, allowing for regeneration of the thioester. Most of the thioester complexes were found to undergo stoichiometric cross‐coupling with phenylboronic acid to yield sulfides. While ethyl trifluoroacetate was also found to form an η²‐carbonyl complex, phenyl esters were found to predominantly undergo C_aryl?O bond cleavage to yield arylnickel complexes. These could also undergo transmetalation to yield biaryls. Attempts to render the reactions catalytic were hindered by ligand scrambling to yield nickel bis(acetate) complexes, the formation of which was supported by independent syntheses. Finally, 2‐naphthyl acetate was also found to undergo clean C_aryl?O bond cleavage, and although stoichiometric cross‐coupling with phenylboronic acid proceeded with good yield, catalytic turnover has so far proven elusive.     

Morphology and properties of super-toughened bio-based poly(lactic acid)/poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) blends by peroxide-induced dynamic vulcanization and interfacial compatibilization

Super-toughened poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) blends were prepared via 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(tert-butylperoxy)hexane (AD) induced dynamic vulcanization and in situ interfacial compatibilization. The effects of AD on the morphology and properties of PLA/EVA blends were studied using a Brabender torque rheometer, gel content test, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and mechanical properties test. The torque and gel content demonstrated that EVA and PLA was successfully vulcanized in the presence of free radicals obtained by the decomposition of the 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(tert-butylperoxy)hexane (AD). Additionally, the gel content results indicated that, compared with PLA, EVA is more aggressive with free radicals. The SEM revealed that a relatively uniform phase morphology and good interfacial compatibilization were achieved in the dynamically vulcanized PLA/EVA/AD blends. The interfacial reaction and compatibilization between the component polymers resulted in the formation of super-toughened PLA/EVA blended materials.     

Synthesis and properties of sulfur‐contained poly(silylene arylacetylene)s

Poly(silylene arylacetylene) (PSA) is a kind of poly(arylacetylene) silicon‐containing resins with excellent heat resistance and good mechanical performances. In this article, the sulfur atom is introduced into the main chain of the PSA molecule to obtain a sulfur‐containing poly(silylene arylacetylene), named S‐PSA. By Williamson and Sonogashira reactions, bis(4‐ethynylphenyl)sulfide and bis(4‐ethynylphenyl)sulfone were synthesized. Thereafter, through Grignard reagent way, the poly(silylene ethynylene phenylene sulfide phenylene ethynylene) (PSESE) and poly(silylene ethynylene phenylene sulfone phenylene ethynylene) (PSESO₂E) were synthesized from bis(4‐ethynylphenyl)sulfide, bis(4‐ethynylphenyl)sulfone, and methylphenyl dichlorosilane. Poly(silylene ethynylene phenylene sulfoxide phenylene ethynylene) (PSESOE) was synthesized by the oxidation of PSESE. The structures and properties of these resins were characterized and the mechanical properties of the T300 reinforced composites were tested. The results show that the novel S‐PSA resins have excellent heat resistance and good mechanical properties, and could be used as resin matrices for high‐performance composites in high‐tech fields. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Analysis of Carbamates as Fluorescent 1-Dimethylamino-naphthalene-5-sulfonate Esters

The fluorigenic labelling of several N-methyl carbamates is carried out using 1-dimethyl-aminonaphthalene-5-sulfonyl chloride (dansyl chloride). Prior to chromatography the carbamates are reacted in aqueous solution with the dansyl chloride. The derivative is extracted from the solution with n-hexane and subsequently spotted on a thin-layer plate for chromatography. For each N-methyl carbamate, two highly fluorescent spots are obtained. One is common to all N-methyl carbamates studied, whereas the other is characteristic of each individual carbamate. N.m.r. and infrared spectroscopic data indicate that the common spot is the methylamine derivative, and the second spot is the derivative from the phenyl moiety of each carbamate. The sensitivity of the method is less than one nanogram and has been successfully applied to the analysis of natural water samples.     

The Behavior of Certain Coumarins and Furocoumarins Toward Sulfur Reagents

The behavior of 4-hydroxycoumarin (1), 7-hydroxycoumarin (2), 4-hydroxy-bergapten (3), and 4-hydroxyisopimpinellin (4) toward sulfur reagents, namely, thionyl chloride, phosphorus pentasulfide, thiolacetic acid, and Lawesson's reagent (5), was studied. The nature of products in each case depended upon the type of reactants and reaction conditions. Possible reaction mechanisms were considered, and structural elucidations of the new products were based upon compatible elementary and spectroscopic evidences.
