Developments in the use of chromatographic techniques in marine laboratories for the determination of halogenated contaminants and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Chromatography has been an important tool in marine laboratories. Since the 1960s, marine laboratories have been involved in the analysis of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Column chromatography and liquid chromatography (LC) techniques have been used, mainly in the clean-up phase, while gas chromatography (GC) has been used extensively in the final determination of these contaminants. Developments have been observed from the use of packed GC columns, via capillary columns to the use of heart-cut multi-dimensional GC and comprehensive multi-dimensional GC. The progress made in interlaboratory studies and the availability of certified reference materials are discussed.     

SOLUBILITIES OF POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS AND DI-REGION THEORY

By using the relationship equation of Partition coefficients with water solubilities for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), we have estimated the solubilities of PAHs. In addition the high-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) method has been used for the indirect determination of solubilities of PAHs. t3ased on the di-region theory, We have studied the relationship of the solubilities of PAHs with carcinogenicity and introduced the solubility parameter into the di-region theory equation. The calculated carcinogenicity of PAHs from the obtained equation shows little difference from that calculated from Dai Qianhuan's equation.

Separation of isomers of saturated polycyclic hydrocarbons in packed capillary columns with graphitized thermal carbon black

Summary Using the example of perhydrophenanthrene, perhydroanthracene and cyclopentanodecalin isomers a possibility is shown to use packed capillary columns containing graphitized thermal carbon black for a complete separation of high-boiling mixtures of polycyclic saturated hydrocarbon isomers in accordance with the geometric structure of their molecules.     

SPORES AND POLLEN IN CRUDE OILS AND PETROLEUM SOURCE OF TARIM BASIN

One hundred and forty-seven species of spores and pollen referred to 77 genera found in the crudeoil samples taken from four petroliferous provinces of the Tarim Basin of Xinjiang Provincehave been studied in this paper. By means of these spore and pollen fossils, the geological ages anddistribution of the petroleum source rocks of the basin are judged. Also, the principles and methodsto judge the petroleum source of a petroleum province by spore/pollen and other microfossils in crudeoils are explained.

A simple method for the calculation of π-bond orders in alternant hydrocarbons

A new method for the calculation of bond orders in alternant hydrocarbons is presented. The method requires a summation over the contributions of various superposition diagrams. Quantitatively, the method is almost as reliable as PPP, and due to its simplicity it can be used for fast and relatively accurate calculation of bond orders. In addition some simple rules are derived, which in many cases can be used to predict the signs of bond orders between nonbonded atoms.Dedicated to Professor J. Molecular parameters and retention characteristics of unsubstituted polyaromatic hydrocarbons in HPLC

Summary The present research studies the possibility of using the correlation dependence between molecular parameters of unsubstituted polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and their retention in reversed-phase liquid chromatography to optimize the conditions for the separation and identification of unknown peaks on the chromatograms of multicomponent mixtures. A linear correlation equation, that takes the number and environment of the carbon atom in the PAH molecule into account as well as the differences in the specific interactions of isomeric molecules with polar eluent, has been proposed. The adequacy of the proposed PAH retention model was verified by comparing the calculated retention values with the experimental data. The possibility of identifying unsubstituted PAH according to the number of carbon atoms of various types and according to the values of the molecules lengths (calculated on the basis of the retention of these substances under different eluent compositions) was exemplified by various chromatographic systems (reversed phase-eluent-PAH molecules).     

Total synthesis and absolute stereochemistry of (9R,10S)-epoxyheptadecan-4,6-diyn-3-one, a diacylglycerol acyltransferase inhibitor from Panax ginseng

Asymmetric synthesis of four possible stereoisomers of (9,10)-epoxyheptadecan-4,6-diyn-3-one was accomplished, and the absolute configuration of the naturally occurring (9R,10S)-epoxyheptadecan-4,6-diyn-3-one (1) was elucidated.
