Broadband dielectric spectroscopy was used to study the segmental (α) and secondary (β) relaxations in hydrogen‐bonded poly(4‐vinylphenol)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PVPh/PMMA) blends with PVPh concentrations of 20–80% and at temperatures from ?30 to approximately glass‐transition temperature (Tg) + 80 °C. Miscible blends were obtained by solution casting from methyl ethyl ketone solution, as confirmed by single differential scanning calorimetry Tg and single segmental relaxation process for each blend. The β relaxation of PMMA maintains similar characteristics in blends with PVPh, compared with neat PMMA. Its relaxation time and activation energy are nearly the same in all blends. Furthermore, the dielectric relaxation strength of PMMA β process in the blends is proportional to the concentration of PMMA, suggesting that blending and intermolecular hydrogen bonding do not modify the local intramolecular motion. The α process, however, represents the segmental motions of both components and becomes slower with increasing PVPh concentration because of the higher Tg. This leads to well‐defined α and β relaxations in the blends above the corresponding Tg, which cannot be reliably resolved in neat PMMA without ambiguous curve deconvolution. The PMMA β process still follows an Arrhenius temperature dependence above Tg, but with an activation energy larger than that observed below Tg because of increased relaxation amplitude. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of the copolymer microstructure on the morphology evolution in polyethylene/poly(ethylene‐co‐α‐olefin) blends were investigated. Microscopy revealed that the melt‐phase morphology, inferred from the solid‐state morphologies of annealed and quenched samples, was strongly affected by the copolymer structure, that is, the branch content and branch length. Higher molecular weight α‐olefin comonomer residues and residue contents in the copolymers led to faster coarsening of the morphology. The molecular weight of the polyethylene and the copolymers affected the coarsening rates of the morphology, principally through its influence on the melt viscosity. The effects of the molecular weight were largely explained by the normalization of the coarsening rate data with respect to the thermal energy and zero‐shear‐rate viscosity. Thus, the effect of the molecular weight on the compatibility of the blends was much smaller than the effects of the branch length and branch number. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The desorption behavior of a surfactant in a linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) blend at elevated temperatures of 50, 70, and 80 °C was studied with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The composition of the LLDPE blend was 70:30 LLDPE/low‐density polyethylene. Three different specimens (II, III, and IV) were prepared with various compositions of a small molecular penetrant, sorbitan palmitate (SPAN‐40), and a migration controller, poly(ethylene acrylic acid) (EAA), in the LLDPE blend. The calculated diffusion coefficient (D) of SPAN‐40 in specimens II, III, and IV, between 50 and 80 °C, varied from 1.74 × 10?11 to 6.79 × 10?11 cm2/s, from 1.10 × 10?11 to 5.75 × 10?11 cm2/s, and from 0.58 × 10?11 to 4.75 × 10?11 cm2/s, respectively. In addition, the calculated activation energies (ED) of specimens II, III, and IV, from the plotting of ln D versus 1/T between 50 and 80 °C, were 42.9, 52.7, and 65.6 kJ/mol, respectively. These values were different from those obtained between 25 and 50 °C and were believed to have been influenced by the interference of Tinuvin (a UV stabilizer) at elevated temperatures higher than 50 °C. Although the desorption rate of SPAN‐40 increased with the temperature and decreased with the EAA content, the observed spectral behavior did not depend on the temperature and time. For all specimens stored over 50 °C, the peak at 1739 cm?1 decreased in a few days and subsequently increased with a peak shift toward 1730 cm?1. This arose from the carbonyl stretching vibration of Tinuvin, possibly because of oxidation or degradation at elevated temperatures. In addition, the incorporation of EAA into the LLDPE blend suppressed the desorption rate of SPAN‐40 and retarded the appearance of the 1730 cm?1 peak. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The phase behavior of binary blends of poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK), sulfonated PEEK, and sulfamidated PEEK with aromatic polyimides is reported. PEEK was determined to be immiscible with a poly(amide imide) (TORLON 4000T). Blends of sulfonated and sulfamidated PEEK with this poly(amide imide), however, are reported here to be miscible in all proportions. Blends of sulfonated PEEK and a poly(ether imide) (ULTEM 1000) are also reported to be miscible. Spectroscopic investigations of the intermolecular interactions suggest that formation of electron donoracceptor complexes between the sulfonated/sulfamidated phenylene rings of the PEEKs and the n-phenylene units of the polyimides are responsible for this miscibility. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

This paper gives a critical review on the applications of ToF SIMS in the areas of polymer additive characterization and in the study of polymer blends and interfaces. Polymer additives can readily be identified by ToF SIMS using their parent molecular ions or characteristic fragments. This analytical capability has been successfully applied to monitor the migration or segregation of additives during polymer processing. ToF SIMS is an ideal analytical tool for the study of polymer blends and interfaces because it is able to provide information on both surface composition and morphology. In combination with other analytical techniques such as AFM and XPS, ToF SIMS chemical imaging capability has opened up new horizons in the investigation of complex polymer blend systems. Finally the main advantages and limitations of ToF SIMS in these application areas are also discussed.  相似文献

The blends composed of polyamide 6 (PA6) and polyamide 66 (PA66) were obtained using two different preparation methods, one of which was the melt‐mixing through a twin‐screw extruder and the subsequent injection molding; and the other, the in situ blending through anionic polymerization of ε‐caprolactam in the presence of PA66. For the former, there existed a remarkable improvement in toughness but a drastic drop in strength and modulus; however, for the latter, a reverse but less significant trend of mechanical properties change appeared. Various characterizations were conducted, including the analyses of crystalline morphology, crystallographic form, and crystallization and melting behaviors using polarized optical microscopy (POM), wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively; observation of morphology of fractured surface with scanning electron microscope (SEM); measurement of glass transition through dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA); and the intermolecular interaction as well as the interchange reaction between the two components by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT‐IR) and 13C solution NMR. The presence and absence of interchange reaction was verified for the in situ and melt‐mixed blends, respectively. It is believed that the transreaction resulted in a drop in glass transition temperature (Tg) for the in situ blends, contrary to an increase of Tg with increasing PA66 content for the melt‐mixed ones. And the two kinds of fabrication methods led to significant differences in the crystallographic form, spherulite size and crystalline content and perfection as well. Accordingly, it is attempted to explain the reasons for the opposite trends of changes in the mechanical properties for these two blends. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The results of experimental and theoretical investigations of elastic and thermophysical properties of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) blends are presented. Eight types of specimens with different ratios of weight contents of PVC and CPE (PVC/CPE = 100/0, 90/10, 80/20, 60/40, 40/60, 20/80, 10/90, and 0/100) were tested. The effect of blend composition on the elastic constants (tensile and shear modulus) is discussed. The data on the thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and heat capacity of the blends investigated are also presented.  相似文献

The rheological behavior of a mixture of two liquid-crystal polymers, hydroxypropyl cellulose and ethyl cellulose, in acetone solution is studied. The total polymer concentration in the solvent is held constant (40%) as the ratio of the two polymers is varied. The mixtures are anisotropic, isotropic, or biphasic (isotropic/anisotropic), depending on the concentration. Curves of viscosity vs shear rate for all the mixtures studied show three regions of viscosity, as described by Onogi and Asada for liquid-crystal polymers. The viscosity as a function of the weight ratio of the two polymers at constant shear rate exhibits deviations from additivity of viscosities of the two components at all concentrations. In mixtures of two polymers in the melt, deviations are also observed; the negative ones are attributed to phase separation and the positive ones to homogenous mixing (comparison with the phase diagram). All the mixtures studied (anisotropic, isotropic, or biphasic), show ranges of shear rates where the first normal-stress difference is negative, as is generally observed for anisotropic liquid-crystal polymers. It is concluded that the isotropic solutions become anisotropic under shear, as they are not far from the critical concentration. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Homopolymers and blends of polycarbonate/ThermX have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, density measurements, and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. The study focuses on the chain mobility and free volume in the amorphous miscible regions of the blends and how this mobility and free volume are affected by increasing crystallinity. It is proposed that judicious annealing, which results in increasing crystallinity (while avoiding ageing or transesterification), induces a constraint on the amorphous region leading to an increase in Tg and coalescence of free volume sites. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
