Intercalated and exfoliated nanocomposites were prepared by extrusion and injection of polyamide‐6 and highly swollen or slightly swollen montmorillonite, respectively. The microstructure of the nanocomposites has been studied previously. In this article, we investigated the influence of the preferential orientation of the montmorillonite sheets on the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. Dynamic mechanical analysis and tensile tests showed that the elastic modulus depends mainly on the filler loading. A parallel coupling could well account for the behavior of the nanocomposites. The calculated elastic and storage moduli of montmorillonite were set to 140 and 40 GPa, respectively. Compression tests were performed to study the anisotropy of the mechanical properties. The elastic modulus and flow strain were sensitive to the filler orientation. A Tandon–Weng approach was applied to consider the geometry of the filler. In all low‐deformation tests, no significant difference between intercalated and exfoliated systems was observed. Finally, the influence of the dispersion and exfoliation state of the filler on the ultimate properties of the nanocomposites (tensile tests) is discussed. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Various cation-exchanged montmorillonites (Li+, Na+, Ba2+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Ag+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Al3+, Pb2+ and NH4+)
were prepared from calcium montmorillonite and their properties were studied by means of X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis.
The two methods give information on the cation exchange in the interlayer space only. X-ray diffraction studies at room temperature
are mainly suitable for estimation of the exchange of cations of different valencies. At 500°C, when the structure is completely
collapsed, the d value of montmorillonite depends on the non-hydrated ionic radius of the interlayer cation, but the measurement
interval is limited for fine interpretation. The thermoanalytical method is suitable for a better distinction of different
exchangeable cations of higher hydration energy on the basis of the DTG or DDTG curve.

The swelling properties of Al-pillared clays, obtained from five different smectites, were studied using X-ray diffraction. These clays, the dioctahedral beidellite and montmorillonite and the trioctahedral saponite, hectorite and laponite differ in source of isomorphic substitution and represent a series of decreasing basicity along the siloxane plane. An Al oxyhydroxy cation was inserted between the layers to form the respective pillared clays and these clays were heated incrementally to 600°C. The XRD peaks at each stage of heating were recorded as well as the same samples subsequently wetted. Basal spacings of each clay at each stage of dehydration d rehydration indicated that the swelling of tetrahedrally substituted saponite and beidellite was indeed restricted, compared with the other three clays. This was attributed to greater basicity of the oxygen plane of beidellite and saponite due to tetrahedral substitution of Si by Al, resulting in an increase in the strength of hydrogen bonds between either water or the interlayer polyhydroxy cation and the clay.The data from the XRD analyses helped in addition, to clarify the thermal transformations of the Keggin ion itself. According to the changes in thed-spacings of the pillared clays it was concluded that the Keggin ion lost its structural water at 200°C and dehydroxylated in a range beginning at 350°C. Summary The performance of acid-treated montmorillonite catalysts in the degradation of polystyrene (PS) was investigated in this study. The degradation was carried out in a semi-batch reactor with a mixture of PS and catalyst at 400-450oC. The commercial Süd Chemie acid-treated montmorillonite clays (K-series) showed good catalytic activity for the degradation of PS. The styrene monomer and ethylbenzene were major liquid products. The increase of surface acidity enhanced further cracking of styrene dimer and trimer to produce styrene monomer. Higher production of ethylbenzene for K30 may be related to its bigger pore volume and surface area compared to those of K5. High degradation temperature favored styrene monomer production. 相似文献

The purified bentonite parent clay, fraction ≤; 2 mm of montmorillonite type, has been pillared by various polyhydroxy cations,
Al, AlFe and AlCu, using conventional pillaring methods. The thermal behavior of PILCs was investigated by combination of
X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal analysis (DTA, TG) and low temperature N2 adsorption/desorption (LTNA). Thermal stability
of Al-, AlFe- and AlCu-PILC samples was estimated after isothermal pretreatment in static air on the temperatures 300, 500,
600 and 900°C. Crucial structural changes were not registered up to 600°C, but the fine changes in interlayer surrounding
and porous/microporous structure being obvious at lower temperatures, depending on the nature of the second pillaring ion.
AlFe-PILC showed higher thermal stability of the texture, the AlCu-PILC having lower values and lower thermal stability concerning
both overall texture and micropore surface and volume. Poorer thermal stability of AlCu-PILC sample at higher temperatures
was confirmed, the presence of Cu in the system contributing to complete destruction of aluminum silicate structure, by 'extracting'
aluminum in stabile spinel form.

Thermo-XRD analysis of the adsorption of Congo-red by montmorillonite saturated with different cations 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The adsorption of the organic anionic dye Congo red (CR) by montmorillonite saturated with Na+, Cs+, Mg2+, Cu2+, Al3+ and Fe3+ was investigated by XRD of unwashed and washed samples after equilibration at 40% humidity and after heating at 360 and at 420°C. The clay was treated with different amounts of CR, most of which was adsorbed. Clay samples, untreated with CR, after heating showed collapsed interlayer space. Unwashed and washed samples, which contained CR, before heating were characterized by three peaks or shoulders, labeled A (at 0.96-0.99 nm, collapsed interlayers), B (at 1.24-1.36 nm) and C (at 2.10-2.50 nm). Peak B represents adsorbed monolayers of water and dye anions inside the interlayer spaces. Peak C represents interlayer spaces with different orientations of the adsorbed water and organic matter. Diffractograms of samples with small amounts of dye were similar to those without dye showing peak B whereas diffractograms of most samples with high amounts of dye showed an additional peak C. Heated unwashed and washed samples were also characterized by three peaks or shoulders, labeled A' (at 0.96 nm), B' (at 1.10-1.33 nm) and C' (at 1.61-2.10 nm), representing collapsed interlayers, and interlayers with charcoal composed of monolayers or multilayers of carbon. When the samples were heated from 360 to 420°C some of the charcoal monolayers underwent rearrangement to multilayers. In the case of Cu the charcoal decomposed and oxidized. Calorimetric measurements of the enthalpy of adsorption on montmorillonite indicate different patterns for methylene blue
(MB) and crystal violet (CV). The enthalpy of adsorption of MB is endothermic up to 73% of the cation exchange capacity (CEC)
(i.e., about 0.6 mmol g-1 clay), whereas at higher adsorption ratios the adsorption reaction becomes exothermic. The enthalpy of adsorption of CV is
exothermic for all amounts adsorbed. These results were confirmed with adsorption experiments that prove that adsorption of
MB increase with temperature, whereas CV adsorption decreases. This behavior indicates changes in the equilibrium coefficient
according to Van't Hoff's equation.
