Wetting at a polymer gel–vapor interface; a system not influenced by a long-range van der Waals contribution

The exterior of a cross-linked polymer gel resembles a polymer brush. Such gel including its brush can be swollen by a good solvent. The detachment of the solvent–vapor (L–V) interface from the brush is controlled by the adsorption of polymer segments onto this interface and is to a very good approximation not influenced by long-range van der Waals contributions. A wetting transition in this system coincided with the adsorption–desorption transition for chains onto such L–V interface and has various unusual features. There are several indications that in practice this system should feature a second-order wetting transition.

Gamma radiation effects on an amine antioxidant added in an ethylene-propylene copolymer

The aim of this work was to compare the gamma radiation induced effects on samples of an ethylene-propylene copolymer antioxidant free with samples loaded with an antioxidant characterised by the presence of an -NH functional group. The employed techniques were Electron Spin Resonance spectroscopy (ESR) and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Stable radicals R---NO° due to the interaction of free radicals produced in the irradiated polymer with the antioxidant have been observed by ESR at room temperature. The time evolution of the ESR signals following the irradiation was examined at different doses. The amount of antioxidant not involved in the oxidation reactions has been determined using HPLC.     

A reply to “a comment on generalized electromagnetism and Dirac algebra”

Issues raised by W. A. Rodrigues, Jr. are discussed.1. This is not a new result; see,e.g., Rohrlich.⁽³⁾ 2. A typographical error in Eq. (77) is corrected here: The productj A in the right-hand parentheses was erroneously transcribed in Ref. (2) as A.3. I define electromagnetic fieldF = A to be that generated by electric charges and the magnetoelectric fieldG = M to be that generated by magnetic monopoles:F F +₅ G. 4. Rodrigues, on the other hand, takes the position that the importance of the Lagrangian formulation should be downgraded if not discarded altogether: ... it is redundant to look for Lagrangians.⁽¹⁾ 5. In fact, he reformulates it using the language of differential forms.6. It is interesting to observe that this bilinear form has the additional virtue of being appropriate for dealing with the monopolecharge parity question, which was pointed out long ago.⁽¹⁴⁾ 7. In fact, even mathematics looks to Nature for its authority.⁽¹⁶⁾ There is evidence that Rodrigues does not understand this concept.⁽¹⁷⁾     

低场脉冲核磁共振测定二醋酸纤维素丝束中油剂

研究了采用低场脉冲核磁共振(NMR)测定二醋酸纤维素丝束油剂的新方法，给出NMR法测定二醋酸纤维素丝束油荆含量的标准曲线。同时对NMR法测量二醋酸纤维素丝束油荆不确定度进行了评估。结果表明，NMR法具有分析速度快、无污染、无损伤和准确度高的优点，适合于二醋酸纤维素丝束油荆的分析。     

Restoration of universality for the rod-to-coil transition scaling in the infinite-dimensionality limit: Exact results for directed walks

We derive scaling forms for the thermodynamic and correlation quantities for the turn-weighted fully and partially directed self-avoiding walks on the hypercubic lattices ind2. In the grand canonical (fixed fugacity per step) ensemble, the conformational rod-to-coil transition sets up in the regimew¯N=O(1), wherew is the weight of each 90° turn and¯N is the (fugacity-dependent) average number of steps. Contrary to the conventional critical phenomena wisdom, the scaling functions for the two different walk models, directed and partially directed, become universal only in the limitd.     

Magnetic resonance in amorphous metals based on Fe in the millimeter radiowave range

The research technique of amorphous magnetics is described. The paper gives the experimental data obtained by a multifunctional low-temperature radiospectrometer Buran in the mm radiowave range and presents their analysis.     

Hydrogel nanonetworks with functional core-shell structure

Nanohydrogel particles of poly(acrylonitrile-co-N-isopropylacrylamide (p(AN-c-NIPAM)) were synthesized using a microemulsion polymerization technique. Highly monodisperse nanohydrogel particles e.g. 50-150 nm, and various morphology such as core-shell and connected beads were obtained. It was shown that the shell thickness and the size of particles can be tuned by the monomer concentrations and their ratios as well as by the utilization of different crosslinkers. The hydrophobic core monomer, AN was converted to amidoxime groups to increase the hydrophilicity of the nanogels which provide more hydrophilic character and impart new functionality to the nanonetwork. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques were employed for the particle size characterizations. The amidoximation reaction was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy.     

Multinuclear magnetic resonance studies on intramolecular chalcogen-tin coordination in compounds of the type Me2Sn(X)CH2CH2P(E)Ph2 (X = Halogen, E = Chalcogen)

Multinuclear magnetic resonance data for the title compounds are presented and discussed. The intramolecular coordination observed in the solid state is shown to be retained in solution. The best probes for the presence or absence of pentacoordination at tin are provided by the various tin-element coupling constants, although chemical shifts are in some cases also informative. A selenium-proton correlated spectrum indicated that the coupling constant ¹J(Sn,Se) has a positive sign.
