 The interaction between oppositely charged polyelectrolytes, in this study poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and copolymers of acrylamide and sodium-acrylate differing in their chain length and charge density parameter (ξ) was investigated in relation to the molar charge ratio of anionic to cationic charges (n /n +). The molecular weights of the polyelectrolytes used were 2.9·105 g/mol for PDADMAC and for the polyacrylamide copolymers 14 ·106 g/mol as well as 5·105 g/mol obtained by ultrasonic degradation of the high molecular weight copolymers. The charge density parameters of the polyanions used (ξ PR ) varied between 0.14 and 0.64. Complexation between PDADMAC and high molecular weight polyanions leads mainly to macroscopic phase separation whereas the degraded polyanions and PDADMAC formed soluble complexes as well as stable dispersions, if charge excess was available. Precipitates and dispersions were characterized by several methods such as element analysis, thermogravimetry, pyrolysis-GC/MS, PEL titration, ζ-potential measurements, determination of turbidity, particle size measurements and determination of carbon content (TOC).  All precipitated complexes include about 20% water and are of 1:1 stoichiometry concerning ionic binding. Investigations of dispersions confirm 1:1 stoichiometry of complex particles stabilized by excess polyelectrolyte and soluble complexes. It was also found that the particle size can be varied via the charge density parameter of the polyanions used in the range of negative charge excess. The self-consistent field theory has been employed to numerically study the response of bi-disperse flexible polyelectrolyte (PE) brushes grafted on an electrode to electric fields generated by opposite surface charges on the PE-grafted electrode and a second parallel electrode. The numerical study reveals that, under a positive external electric field, the shorter and negatively charged PE chains are more responsive than the longer PE chains in terms of the relative changes in their respective brush heights. Whereas under a negative external electric field, the opposite was observed. The total electric force on the grafted PE chains was calculated and it was found that, under a positive external electric field, the magnitude of the total electric force acting on one shorter PE chain is larger than that on one longer PE chain, or vice versa. The underlying mechanism was unraveled through analyzing the total electric field across the two oppositely charged electrodes.  相似文献

Mixed mode (MM) separation using a combination of MEKC and polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) coatings is herein reported for the separation of achiral and chiral analytes. Many analytes are difficult to separate by MEKC and PEM coatings alone. Therefore, the implementation of a MM separation provides several advantages for overcoming the limitations of these well‐established methods. In this study, it was observed that achiral separations using MEKC and PEM coatings individually resulted in partial resolution of eight very similar aryl ketones when the molecular micelle (sodium poly(N‐undecanoyl‐L ‐glycinate)) concentration was varied from 0.25 to 1.00% w/v and the bilayer number varied from 2 to 4. However, when MM separation was introduced, baseline resolution was achieved for all eight analytes. In the case of chiral separations, temazepam, aminoglutethimide, benzoin, benzoin methyl ether, and coumachlor were separated using the three separation techniques. For chiral separations, the chiral molecular micelle, sodium poly(N‐undecanoyl‐L ‐leucylvalinate), was employed at concentrations of 0.25–1.50% w/v for both MEKC and PEM coatings. Overall, the results revealed partial separation with MEKC and PEM coatings individually. However, MM separation enabled baseline separation of each chiral mixture. The separation of achiral and chiral compounds from different compound classes demonstrates the versatility of this MM approach.  相似文献

The polycation preparation of poly(dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate) hydrochloride and the multilayer formation in combination with poly(sodium 4-styrenesulphonate) as polyanion studies onto different substrates, as followed by streaming potential measurements, in situ surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy, and multi-wavelength ellipsometry, are reported. Furthermore, we studied the resulting multilayer buildup of dry surfaces by UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy measurements. Thereby, the layer built up at the solid/liquid-interface could be followed and quantified at the molecular level.This revised version was published online in April 2005 with corrections to the article category.  相似文献

We directly monitor the absolute separation profiles that function as film thickness between a single glass disk and the charged polyelectrolyte brushes decorated steel slider in water using a home-made slider-on-disk apparatus, which reflects the structural conformation variations and interactions of polymer brushes under externally applied pressure, in addition to probing the relative variation of friction forces under different applied loads and sliding velocities. We find that the polyelectrolyte brushes modified surfaces can sustain high pressure and have extremely low friction coefficients(around 0.006 at pressures of 0.13 MPa; 0.5-0.6 without brushes). The water-lubrication characteristics are correlated to the structural conformation changes of the polyelectrolyte brushes that are mainly governed by electrostatic interactions and the osmotic pressure of counterions inside the polymer chains, which can be used to support and distribute the normal pressure. The apparent thickness of the brush decreases with the increase of loading forces, an increase in the ionic strength causes the polymer chains collapse, and the friction forces increase. This fundamental research is of great importance to understand the mechanical and structural properties of polyelectrolyte brushes and their influences on the tribological behaviors, and helps to design friction/lubrication-controlled surface/interface by taking advantage of polyelectrolyte brushes.  相似文献

In this work we present a new approach for protection of the fiber in solid phase microextraction (SPME) from interfering charged particles present in the sample medium. It involves coating of commercial poly(dimethylsiloxane) extraction phase with polyelectrolyte layer composed of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate). The modified fiber provides reproducible, convenient and fast extraction capabilities toward the model analyte, triclosan (TCS). A negatively charged polyelectrolyte coating prevents sorbing oxidic nanoparticles from both partitioning into the PDMS phase and aggregation at its surface. The results for the TCS/nanoparticle sample show that the polyelectrolyte layer-modified solid phase extracts just the free form of the organic compound and enables dynamic speciation analysis of the nanoparticulate target analyte complex.  相似文献

In polyelectrolyte-enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF), a water-soluble anionic polyelectrolyte (in this study sodium polystyrene sulfonate or PSS) is added to hard water. The calcium and magnesium bind to the polymer which has a high enough molecular weight to be rejected by an ultrafiltration membrane. The permeate is softened water. Economically, the PSS needs to be recovered from the retentate for reuse. Three methods of recovery developed in this study were addition of NaCl, Na2CO3 or HCl to PEUF to regenerate PSS. Of the three PEUF processes considered, NaCl/PEUF as compared to Na2CO3/PEUF and HCl/PEUF provided the best scheme for the water softening process. PEUF is shown in this study to be competitive with lime softening at low flow rates. The PEUF process is more expensive than ion exchange for a stream containing only hardness ions. However, PEUF becomes nearly comparable with ion exchange for a stream containing hardness ions as well as bacteria, viruses and pyrogen. The cost comparisons are based on fully continuous operations and include treatment of waste streams from each process.  相似文献
