Molecular imprinting in ultrathin titania gel films via surface sol-gel process

Recent progresses of molecular imprinting in metal oxide matrices were summarized. Application of the surface sol-gel process to mixtures of organic carboxylic acids and titanium alkoxide provides ultrathin layers of titania gel (10-20 nm thick), in which molecule-sized cavities are kept intact upon removal of the organic templates. The imprinted cavity reflects the structural and functional features of the template molecule, and the enantioselective imprinting of dipeptide isomers is observed. Robustness and flexibility of the ultrathin titania layer is demonstrated by the formation of interconnected titania hollow structures. Possible practical applications and unsolved problems of this technique are discussed.     

Volatile phase profiling of mainstream smoke by glass capillary gas-chromatographic techniques

A heated injection system for a microprocessor-controlled GC has been developed for the (GC)² analysis of the volatile phase of whole smoke of a cigarette. Effects of injection port temperature and the presence of a Cambridge filter pad are demonstrated. Chromatograms are shown for smoke samples with and without a Cambridge Filter with the sample valve oven at 25°, 165° and 205°C. The use of a flame ionization and a nitrogen-phosphorous detector is illustrated.     

Synthesis, spectroscopic studies and crystal structure of a polyoxoanion cluster incorporating para-bromophenylimido ligand, (Bu4N)2[Mo6O18(NC6H4Br-p)]

An organic-inorganic hybrid compound, (Bu₄N)₂[Mo₆O₁₈(NAr)] (Ar = p-BrC₆H₄) has been synthesized via the DCC dehydrating protocol of the reaction of [α-Mo₈O₂₆]⁴⁻ with 4-bromoaniline hydrochloride in anhydrous acetonitrile, which has been characterized by UV-Vis spectra, ¹H NMR and single crystal X-ray diffraction study. By comparing the UV-Vis spectra, which were used to monitor the reaction, the optimum preparative condition for this compound was also determined. This compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2₁/n, which is featured in a terminal para-bromophenylimido group linked to an Mo atom of a hexamolybdate cluster by a Mo-N triply bond. In addition, there are π-π dimerization of the neighboring cluster anions though the parallel aromatic rings in their crystals.

A novel indicator series for measuring pKa values in acetonitrile

A series of substituted azobenzene dyes was found to span a range of 8 pK_a units in acetonitrile. The UV absorption spectra of the dyes are responsive to protonation, changing in both absorption maximum and intensity. These characteristics make the dyes useful as indicators for the measurement of pK_a values of neutral organic bases that absorb in the visible region of the spectrum.

Sulfide oxygenation by tert-butyl hydroperoxide with mononuclear (Me3TACN)Mn catalysts

Mononuclear (Me₃TACN)MnX₃ compounds, where X is Cl⁻, Br⁻, or N₃⁻, and Me₃TACN is 1,4,7-N,N′,N″-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane, have been tested for catalyzing both sulfide oxygenation and styrene epoxidation by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) and display turnover frequencies (TOF) up to 200 h⁻¹ at room temperature. Sulfoxides or sulfones may be produced selectively by varying reaction conditions. Product distribution from the oxygenation reactions of ethyl phenyl sulfide, 2-chloroethyl phenyl sulfide, and styrene is consistent with a mechanism involving an early single-electron transfer (SET) step.     

Chemically Sensitive Field‐Effect Transistors and Chemiresistors: New Materials and Device Structures

Electronic sensor technology remains of widespread and intense interest. There are compelling needs to detect chemical species ranging from small molecules dispersed in the gas phase to complex biopolymers in aqueous solution. This review describes some recent advances in three main areas: chemically sensitive resistors (chemiresistors, CRs) including inorganic and organic based devices, field effect transistors (FETs) with semiconducting layers and/or gates with chemical sensitivity, and sensors based on the differential conductivity of nanotubes and nanowires. Results reported in the last two to three years are emphasized, highlighting some current trends in the development of sensors for applications such as diagnostics, process monitoring, and security.
