The analyzing power Ay(θ) for the 9Be(p, n)9B reaction from 8 TO 15 MeV

The analyzing power A_y(θ) for the ⁹Be(p, n)⁹B reaction was measured at seven energies between 8.1 to 15.0 MeV for reaction angles between 0° and 100° (c.m.). The A_y(θ) values are predominantly negative and exhibit a smooth variation with energy. The significance of these results in Lane optical- model calculations for the ⁹Be + nucleon system and in comparisons between the observables P^y(θ) and A_y(θ) is indicated.     

The level structure of 90Mo

High-spin states of the N = 48 nucleus ⁹⁰Mo have been studied using the 33 MeV ⁹⁰Zr(³He, 3nγ) reaction. A previously unknown level structure above the 8⁺ isomer and several new lower-lying levels have been identified. The results are discussed in terms of shell-model calculations which allow four protons in the $\text{2}\text{p}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>1</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}\text{and}\text{1}\text{g}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>9</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}$ subshells and two neutron holes in the $\text{1}\text{f}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>5</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}\text{, 2}\text{p}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>3</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}\text{, 2}\text{p}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>1</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}\text{,}\text{or}\text{1}\text{g}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>9</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}$ orbitals.     

Elastic neutron transfer in the scattering of Si isotopes

Angular distributions of the elastic scattering of ²⁸Si on ²⁹Si and ³⁰Si have been measured for incident beam energies at E = 65 and 70 MeV with a time-of-flight spectrometer for heavy ions. At 70 MeV the neutron transfer ³⁰Si(²⁸Si, ²⁹Si)²⁹Si was observed in addition to the elastic channel. The pronounced oscillations in the elastic scattering distributions are interpreted as being due to an elastic transfer of neutrons between the colliding nuclei during the scattering process. This assumption is in accordance with some general features of the data and allows for the extraction of spectroscopic factors of the transferred neutrons.     

Gamma-ray decay from the analogue state of the Ca g.s.

The γ-decay from three fine-structure components of the ⁴⁹Ca ground state analogue has been investigated. Angular distributions have been measured for the decay from the strongest component. Absolute γ-widths are found from the γ-spectra, and the proton and neutron widths from fits to the ⁴⁸Ca(p, p) and (p, n) excitation functions. A group of eight states with E_x around 7 MeV is found to carry a significant part of the M1 strength. A comparison with the β-decay from ⁴⁹Ca has been made.     

Odd-even features in 3He + 3H scattering

The single-channel resonating-group method is used to study effects of the Pauli principle on ³He + ³H scattering. Comparison is made with previous similar calculations for d + ³He scattering, and it is found that the Pauli principle affects the s = 0 state of the ³He + ³H system rather similarly to the way it affects the s = 1 state, whereas the Pauli principle affects the $\text{s =}\text{3}\text{2}$ state of the d + ³He system quite differently from the way it affects the $\text{s =}\text{1}\text{2}$ state. Mention is made of the possibility of observing similar effects of the Pauli principle in other nuclear systems.     

A study of three-nucleon transfer reactions on 17O

The reactions ¹⁷O(¹¹B, ⁸Li)²⁰Ne, ¹⁷O(¹²C, ⁹Be)²⁰Ne and ¹⁷O(¹³C, ¹⁰B)²⁰F have been studied using beams of 115 MeV ¹¹B and ¹²C and 105 MeV ¹³C incident on a gas target. Shell-model calculations have been performed for ²⁰Ne and ²⁰F, for comparison with the experimental data. It is found that the data can be interpreted using the shell model spectroscopic factors and a semi-classical reaction theory. We justify the use of the latter by applying it to the cases of three-nucleon transfer on ¹⁶O. Spin assignments are suggested for previously unidentified states in ²⁰F.     

Search for γ-rays emitted in the formation of a fission isomer

A search for γ-rays preceding isomeric fission in the reaction²³⁸U(α, 2n)^240mPu yielded negative results. Upper limits are given for the number of unconverted photons per isomer formed.     

(γ, γ′) reactions in 89Y, 115In and 197Au at intermediate energies

The yields of isomeric states in ⁸⁹Y, ¹¹⁵In and ¹⁹⁷Au produced by the (γ, γ') reaction have been measured in the energy range 100–800 MeV by the activation method. From the yields the cross sections have been deduced. Large cross sections around the first pion resonance are found. The experimental results are compared to calculations based on the impulse approximation.     

The radiative capture of fast protons by medium-mass nuclei

High-energy photon spectra were obtained with moderate resolution for a number of neighboring nuclei: ⁵⁶Fe, ⁵⁹Co, ⁵⁸Ni, ⁶⁰Ni, ⁶¹Ni, ⁶³Cu and ⁶⁴Zn in bombardments with protons (8 to 22 MeV). The shapes, magnitudes and energy dependence of the observed spectra are found to be consistent in most of their essential features with the implications of the semidirect model for fast nucleon capture.
