A novel analytical technique for isotopic analysis of dissolved and particulate iron (Fe) from various marine environments is presented in this paper. It combines coprecipitation of dissolved Fe (DFe) samples with Mg(OH)2, and acid digestion of particulate Fe (PFe) samples with double pass chromatographic separation. Isotopic data were obtained using a Nu Plasma MC-ICP-MS in dry plasma mode, applying a combination of standard-sample bracketing and external normalization by Cu doping. Argon interferences were determined prior to each analysis and automatically subtracted during analysis. Sample size can be varied between 200 and 600 ng of Fe per measurement and total procedural blanks are better than 10 ng of Fe. Typical external precision of replicate analyses (1S.D.) is ±0.07‰ on δ56Fe and ±0.09‰ on δ57Fe while typical internal precision of a measurement (1S.E.) is ±0.03‰ on δ56Fe and ±0.04‰ on δ57Fe. Accuracy and precision were assured by the analysis of reference material IRMM-014, an in-house pure Fe standard, an in-house rock standard, as well as by inter-laboratory comparison using a hematite standard from ETH (Zürich). The lowest amount of Fe (200 ng) at which a reliable isotopic measurement could still be performed corresponds to a DFe or PFe concentration of ∼2 nmol L−1 for a 2 L sample size. To show the versatility of the method, results are presented from contrasting environments characterized by a wide range of Fe concentrations as well as varying salt content: the Scheldt estuary, the North Sea, and Antarctic pack ice. The range of DFe and PFe concentrations encountered in this investigation falls between 2 and 2000 nmol L−1 Fe. The distinct isotopic compositions detected in these environments cover the whole range reported in previous studies of natural Fe isotopic fractionation in the marine environment, i.e. δ56Fe varies between −3.5‰ and +1.5‰. The largest fractionations were observed in environments characterized by redox changes and/or strong Fe cycling. Using the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) monthly aerosol optical depth (AOD) at 500 nm data from 1980 to 2001 in north China, the spatial and temporal variations of AOD were examined. Seasonal AODs in Taldimakan Desert were 0.69 and 0.44 in spring and summer,respectively, which were mainly due to frequent occurrences of dust events in this region. Dust activities in spring also led to high aerosol loading in Gobi Desert and in northeast China where spring AODs were 0.33 and 0.29, respectively. Heavily impacted by events such as volcano eruption, forest fires and extraordinary dust storms, AODs showed large inter-annual variations. A decreasing tendency in AOD was observed in north China during 1980-1991, though a reverse tendency was revealed during 1997-2001, especially for spring AOD in northeast China. Further study is required to figure out how much human activities have contributed to the AOD tendency in north China. 相似文献

Shelf sediments of the southern North Sea, were studied with a microanalytical [electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPXMA)] and two bulk [X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF)] techniques. The investigation proved that the promptness of the microanalytical method is combined with a reasonable analytical reliability. XRD studies of such a type of sediments with monotonous mineral composition are not able to provide mineralogical information beyond the main well-crystalline minerals and the mineralogical quantitative characteristic of the sediment based on XRD estimations are incorrect. The EPXMA mineralogical interpretations are based on the statistical evaluation of a huge data set (thousands of mineral particles) and provide a rather correct quantitative determination of the main minerals. The comparative EPXMA-XRF study revealed that the Al, Si, K, Ca, Fe and to some extent Ti contents estimated by EPXMA are fairly reliable. In this respect the accuracy of the EPXMA-based mineral identification of the pure silicates, pure aluminosilicates, and Al-, Ca-, Fe- and Ti-containing minerals with simple composition is very high. Mg-calcite, augite and apatite determinations are assessed to be correct. The supposed accuracy of the clay mineral determinations is slightly lower (70-80%) than that of the other main minerals due to the complex and varying composition of the clays. The identification of XRD-invisible accessory minerals and quantification of their presence in the sediments is an essential advantage of the EPXMA, which makes it a useful approach in tracing the origin of the sediments, the pathways of their transport and the geochemical processes they have undergone.However, the EPXMA has several flaws, which need to be solved in the future sediment investigations: (1) calibration with natural standards is needed in order to provide a higher accuracy of the mineral determinations; (2) any EPXMA study of sediments needs to be secured with XRF examinations of selected samples since EPXMA gives only semi-quantitative information about the abundance of the elements; (3) ultra-thin window EPXMA of low-Z elements has to be used since some of them (O, C) are always present in the main sediment components: silicates, aluminosilicates, carbonates and metal oxyhydroxides; (4) the interpretations of the clay fraction have to be supported with detailed XRD investigations of selected samples, while the mineralogy of the silt and sand fractions needs to be backed up with optical microscopy studies. The information from different analytical techniques (EPXMA with XRF-XRD-optical microscopy of selected samples) combined with the knowledge about the most possible minerals in a given environment, would give the most reliable results in studying mineralogical composition of shelf sediments. 相似文献

An enhanced version of our localized truncation error analysis with complex derivatives (LTEA?CD ) a posteriori approach to computing target element sizes for tidal, shallow water flow, LTEA+CD , is applied to the Western North Atlantic Tidal model domain. The LTEA + CD method utilizes localized truncation error estimates of the shallow water momentum equations and builds upon LTEA and LTEA?CD‐based techniques by including: (1) velocity fields from a nonlinear simulation with complete constituent forcing; (2) spatially variable bottom stress; and (3) Coriolis force. Use of complex derivatives in this case results in a simple truncation error expression, and the ability to compute localized truncation errors using difference equations that employ only seven to eight computational points. The compact difference molecules allow the computation of truncation error estimates and target element sizes throughout the domain, including along the boundary; this fact, along with inclusion of locally variable bottom stress and Coriolis force, constitute significant advancements beyond the capabilities of LTEA. The goal of LTEA + CD is to drive the truncation error to a more uniform, domain‐wide value by adjusting element sizes (we apply LTEA + CD by re‐meshing the entire domain, not by moving nodes). We find that LTEA + CD can produce a mesh that is comprised of fewer nodes and elements than an initial high‐resolution mesh while performing as well as the initial mesh when considering the resynthesized tidal signals (elevations). Host defense peptides (HDPs) are a group of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that are crucial components of the innate immune system of many different organisms. These small peptides actively kill microbes and prevent infection. Despite the presence of AMPs in the amphibian immune system, populations of these organisms are in decline globally. Magainin is an AMP derived from the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) and has displayed potent antimicrobial effects against a wide variety of microbes. Included in this group of microbes are known pathogens of the African clawed frog and other amphibian species. Arguably, the most deleterious amphibious pathogen is Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, a chytrid fungus. Investigating the mechanism of action of magainin can help understand how to effectively fight off infection. By understanding amphibian AMPs’ role in the frog, a potential conservation strategy can be developed for other species of amphibians that are susceptible to infections, such as the North American green frog (Rana clamitans). Considering that population declines of these organisms are occurring globally, this effort is crucial to protect not only these organisms but the ecosystems they inhabit as well. 相似文献

A staggered spectral element model for the solution of the oceanic shallow water equations is presented. We introduce and compare both an implicit and an explicit time integration scheme. The former splits the equations with the operator-integration factor method and solves the resulting algebraic system with generalized minimum residual (GMRES) iterations. Comparison of the two schemes shows the performance of the implicit scheme to lag that of the explicit scheme because of the unpreconditioned implementation of GMRES. The explicit code is successfully applied to various geophysical flows in idealized and realistic basins, notably to the wind-driven circulation in the North Atlantic Ocean. The last experiment reveals the geometric versatility of the spectral element method and the effectiveness of the staggering in eliminating sprious pressure modes when the flow is nearly non-divergent. 相似文献
