Manipulating electronic and magnetic properties of black phosphorene with 4d series transition metal adsorption

We carry out first-principles calculations within density-functional theory to investigate the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of 4d transition metal (TM) decorated monolayer black phosphorene (BP). The results indicate that the TM adsorption on BP can have dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) properties. The spin polarized semiconducting state is realized in BP by adsorption of Y, Nb and Ru, while a half-metal state is obtained by Tc adsorption. In the case of two same types of TMs adsorption on BP, only [email protected] shows DMS state. In particular, two different types of TMs decorated BP can induce magnetic moments, localized mainly on the 4d TMs and the neighboring P atoms. Furthermore, the 4d TMs may enrich the electronic properties of BP, such as half-metallic, metallic and semiconducting features. These findings suggest that the 4d TM adsorbed BP can be used as a potential next-generation spintronics and magnetic storage material.     

Principles and applications of a research-oriented gas chromatography—mass spectrometry data system

A research-oriented gas chromatography—mass spectrometry data system for a quadrupole mass spectrometer has been developed based on a centrally located departmental computer facility. An overview of the hardware and software system is presented, emphasizing the important aspects of on-line computer data acquisition and control and the design philosophy used in the development of the system. The application of the system is demonstrated by the g.c.—m.s. analysis of a mixture of four transition metal β-diketonates (Al, Cr, Rh, and Ru tris-1,1,1-trifluoro-pentane-2,4-dionate). This analysis involved vacuum gas chromatography with a support-coated open tubular column and detection of the eluent by chemical ionization mass spectrometry. The results demonstrate the data system capabilities and indicate the utility of the combined methodologies.     

Pinkness of the North Atlantic Oscillation signal revisited

The long episode of negative values in the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index during the winter season 2009-2010 has attracted more attention to its predictability. Previous analyses (Fernández et al. (2003) [16] and Caldeira et al. (2007) [25]) by this same author group have established that the NAO signal behaves as a slightly red noise and therefore the prediction of the phenomenon must rely upon a deeper understanding of the underlying Physics. In this paper the authors address a predictability study of the NAO index by applying the “detrended fluctuation analysis” (DFA) to a composite series, completed with a bootstrap spectral analysis. The DFA provides a quantitative measure of predictability by computing several piecewise fits, either linear or higher degree polynomial ones, to a cumulative series of fluctuations associated to the original series. These newer measurements agree with the previous results.     

The zero point average structure of isobutane as determined by electron diffraction and microwave spectroscopy

The molecular structure of isobutane in the gas phase was investigated by combining electron diffraction data with microwave spectroscopic rotational constants of Lide.The analysis indicated that the tertiary C-H distance (r_g = 1.122±0.006 Å) was substantially longer than the average methyl C-H distance (r_g = 1.113±0.002 Å). Other structural parameters obtained were: r_g(C-C) = 1.535±0.001 Å, ∠CCC = 110.8±0.2°, and the average ∠CCH (methyl) = 111.4±0.2°.     

Monitoring of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Levels in Mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) from Aquaculture Farms in Central Macedonia Region,Greece, Using Gas Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry Method

A new sensitive and selective gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) method was developed for the analysis of 26 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including 16 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and 15 + 1 European Union (EU) PAHs, in mussel samples from aquaculture farms in Thermaikos and Strymonian Gulf, Central Macedonia Region, in three sampling periods. Concentrations were found at moderate to low values at all sampling sites, without exceeding maximum levels set by EU. Low molecular weight PAHs were predominant in all samples. Seasonal variation of the concentrations was observed; values were slightly higher in the winter period. Use of diagnostic ratios for potential sources of PAHs showed both petrogenic and pyrolitic origin. In comparison to other related studies of mussels from the Mediterranean Sea, Greek mussels cultivated in the studied gulfs are low in contaminants due to minimal environmental pollution effects. Low concentrations of PAHs are in compliance with the low values of other POPs which were found in the mussels.     

Interdecadal variability of the tropospheric biennial oscillation in the western North Pacific

The observed tropospheric biennial oscillation （TBO） in the western North Pacific （WNP） monsoon region has an interdecadal variability with a period of 40-50 yr. That suggests a weaker effect of the TBO on the East Asia followed by a stronger one. A simple analytic model was designed to investigate the mechanism of the interdecadal variability of the TBO. The results indicated that a local TBO air-sea system not only supports the TBO variability in the WNP monsoon region but also produces an interdecadal variability of the TBO.     

Resource allocation in the North Sea demersal fisheries: A goal programming approach

The management of a fishery is a complex task generally involving multiple, often conflicting, objectives. These objectives typically include economic, biological and social goals such as improving the income of fishers, reducing the catch of depleted species and maintaining employment.Multicriteria decision making (MCDM) techniques appear wellsuited to such a management problem, allowing compromises between conflicting objectives to be analysed in a structured framework. In comparison to other fields, such as water resource planning, forestry and agriculture, there have been few applications of MCDM to fisheries.In this paper, a goal programming model of the North Sea demersal fishery is presented. The model is used to demonstrate the potential applicability of this type of approach to the analysis and development of fisheries management plans with multiple objectives. Alternative scenarios are considered for the problem, and tradeoffs between given objectives are also highlighted and discussed.     

Microwave spectra of isotopic pyrazoles and molecular structure of pyrazole

Microwave spectra of the complete set of monosubstituted isotopic pyrazoles have been investigated and the complete r_s structure of pyrazole determined. The deuterated and ¹⁵N species of pyrazole were prepared, while the ¹³C species were examined in natural abundance. The spectrum of the parent compound was remeasured yielding rotational and centrifugal distortion constants.The mutual position of the hydrogen atoms and the direction of the dipole moment in the pyrazole principal axis system has been unambiguously established.The ¹⁴N quadrupole hyperfine structure was resolved and the quadrupole coupling constants derived by Blackman et al. [8] were confirmed.An estimated r_z structure is compared to crystal structures derived by X-ray and neutron diffraction showing the N-H bond in the crystal to be prolonged. But, otherwise no significant differences seem to develop when bringing the molecule from its isolated state into the crystal with its strong hydrogen bonds.     

Evaluation of Automated ECG Monitoring: Theoretical Model Based upon Point Process Techniques

The development of practical methods of ECG monitoring using dedicated computers has presented problems in the evaluation and comparison of the relative effectiveness of various ECG monitoring systems. A theoretical model based on the application of point process techniques is discussed in this paper.
