Mössbauer Spectroscopic Studies of Ferrocenylaldimines and their TCNQ Complexes

A series of ferrocenylaldimines (Fc-CH=N-R) has been prepared by Schiff base condensation of formylferrocene with polyacenylamines RNH₂ where R = naphthyl, 5,6,7,8-tetrahydronaphthyl, anthracenyl, and pyrenyl groups. This step was followed by oxidation with TCNQ to give [Fc-CH = N-R][TCNQ]² salts. The electronic state of iron in these compounds was investigated by means of⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy.     

Fast chromatographic separation of (−)-menthyl chloroformate derivatives of some chiral drugs,with special reference to amlodipine,on porous graphitic carbon

Summary Enantiomeric separation of (–)-menthyl chloroformate derivatives of some chiral cardioactive drugs, on porous graphitic carbon (PGC), Hypercarb-S, is described. Capacity and separation factors of derivatives of the calcium channel blockers; amlodipine and UK52.829, the -blockers; atenolol, sotalol and propranolol, and mexiletine were studied in different chromatographic systems based on dichloromethane. A high content of a carboxylic acid in the mobile phase was found to decrease the retention and positively affect the stereoselectivity of the derivatives. A mobile phase with dichloromethane, acetonitrile and formic acid gave baseline separation of the enantiomers of amlodipine in less than 8 minutes. Results show that acetic acid and formic acid, may be regarded as strong organic solvents in PGC chromatography with nearly the same elution power as dichloromethane.     

Analysis of the Association Process Between a Series of Phenol Derivatives with Two Novel Fluorinated Stationary Phase Using the Cl− Anion as Retention Marker

Summary Lithium chloride (LiCl) effect on the retention process of a phenol derivative series was investigated on two types of fluorinated stationary phase (i.e. a silica grafted with fluorinated linear alkyl chain (L-FSP) and a silica grafted with fluorinated aromatic ring stationary phase (A-FSP)). The results showed that the solute retention is enhanced when the A-FSP was used instead of the L-FSP due to additional – interactions. For the two fluorinated stationary phases (FSPs), the phenol-FSP association process can be divided into two LiCl concentration domains demonstrated that it was important to take into account the adsorbtion of Cl^– anion on the FSPs. As well, enthalpy-entropy compensation revealed that the solute retention mechanism was independent of the solute molecular structure and confirmed a change on the solute retention mechanism at a critical LiCl concentration value around 0.02M.

Investigation of the luminescent properties of terbium-anthranilate complexes and application to the determination of anthranilic acid derivatives in aqueous solutions

The luminescent properties of terbium complexes with furosemide (FR), flufenamic (FF) acid, tolfenamic (TF) acid and mefenamic (MF) acid have been investigated in aqueous solutions. For all four compounds, complexation occurs when the carboxylic acid of the aminobenzoic group is dissociated and is greatly favoured in the presence of trioctylphosphine oxide as co-ligand and Triton X-100 as surfactant. Under optimum conditions, luminescence of the lanthanide ion is efficiently sensitised and the lifetime of the resonance level of terbium in the complex is ranging between 1 and 1.9 ms, against 0.4 ms for the aqua ion. The sensitivity of the method for the determination of anthranilic acid derivatives is improved by one to two orders of magnitude with respect to that achieved using native fluorescence or terbium-sensitised luminescence in methanol. The limits of detection are 2×10⁻¹⁰, 5×10⁻¹⁰ and 2×10⁻⁹ mol l⁻¹ for flufenamic acid, furosemide and tolfenamic acid, and mefenamic acid, respectively, with within-run RSD values of less than 1%. The method has been applied to the determination of flufenamic acid in spiked calf sera with and without sample pretreatment. Depending on the method and the analyte concentration, the recovery was ranging between 83 and 113% and the lowest concentration attainable in serum samples was close to 1×10⁻⁷ mol l⁻¹.

A New Brominated Phenylpropylaldehyde and its Dimethyl Acetal from Red Alga Rhodomela confervoides

A new brominated phenylpropylaldehyde and its dimethyl acetal together with a new natural brominated phenol were isolated from Rhodomela confervoides. Their structrues were elucidated as 2-methyl-3-(2,3-dibromo-4,5-dihydroxyphenyl)propylaldehyde, 2-methyl-3-(2,3-di-bromo-4,5-dihydroxyphenyl) propylaldehyde dimethyl acetal and 3-bromo-4,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid methyl ester by spectroscopic techniques including IR, HRFABMS, 1D and 2DNMR experiments.

Detection of proline,arginine, and lysine using iodine‐azide reaction in TLC and HPTLC

The application of a modified iodine‐azide procedure for the detection of proline, arginine, and lysine is described. Phenyl isothiocyanate was used to transform amino acids into phenyl thiocarbamyl derivatives (derivatization in situ). The developed plates were sprayed with a mixture of sodium azide and starch solution, adjusted to pH 5.5, and exposed to iodine vapour. Due to the catalytic effect of the C? S bond, the spots appeared white on a violet‐grey background and were stable for 20 minutes. The detection limits were found to lie in the pmole range. The iodine‐azide test is compared with other procedures (iodine, UV, ninhydrin).
