Performance and analysis of saddle point preconditioners for the discrete steady-state Navier-Stokes equations

Summary. We examine the convergence characteristics of iterative methods based on a new preconditioning operator for solving the linear systems arising from discretization and linearization of the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations. With a combination of analytic and empirical results, we study the effects of fundamental parameters on convergence. We demonstrate that the preconditioned problem has an eigenvalue distribution consisting of a tightly clustered set together with a small number of outliers. The structure of these distributions is independent of the discretization mesh size, but the cardinality of the set of outliers increases slowly as the viscosity becomes smaller. These characteristics are directly correlated with the convergence properties of iterative solvers. Received August 5, 2000 / Published online June 20, 2001     

Coupling Losses for Resonators with Unequal Apertures for Extended Fresnel Numbers

Coupling losses have been calculated for laser resonators with unequal apertures and extended Fresnel Numbers. This was done using both, diffraction theory and a simple linear model.A close form expression was derived to calculate coupling losses with reasonable accuracies for a limited range of paramters. This should help in the preliminary design of hole coupling laser resonators.     

Synthesis and characterization of novel thermoresponsive‐co‐biodegradable hydrogels composed of N‐isopropylacrylamide,poly(L‐lactic acid), and dextran

A series of novel multifunctional hydrogels that combined the merits of both thermoresponsive and biodegradable polymeric materials were designed, synthesized, and characterized. The hydrogels were copolymeric networks composed of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAM) as a thermoresponsive component, poly(L‐lactic acid) (PLLA) as a hydrolytically degradable and hydrophobic component, and dextran as an enzymatically degradable and hydrophilic component. The chemical structures of the hydrogels were characterized by an attenuated total reflection–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR–FTIR) technique. The hydrogels were thermoresponsive, showing a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) at approximately 32 °C, and their swelling properties strongly depended on temperature changes, the balance of the hydrophilic/hydrophobic components, and the degradation of the PLLA component. The degradation of the hydrogels caused by hydrolytic cleavage of ester bonds in the PLLA component was faster at 25 °C below the LCST than at 37 °C above the LCST, determined by the ATR–FTIR technique. On the absolute matrix summability of Fourier series and some associated series

The object of the paper is to study the absolute matrix summability problem of Fourier series, conjugate series and some associated series under a new set of conditions on matrix methods, generalising many known results in the literature.     

An analytical proof of Hardy-like inequalities related to the Dirac operator

We prove some sharp Hardy-type inequalities related to the Dirac operator by elementary, direct methods. Some of these inequalities have been obtained previously using spectral information about the Dirac-Coulomb operator. Our results are stated under optimal conditions on the asymptotics of the potentials near zero and near infinity.     

Oxidative Coupling of Thiols to Disulfides with Ti(IV) in the Presence of NaI under Air Atmosphere

Ti(IV) as TiCl₃(O₃SCF₃) and TiO(O₂CCF₃)₂ are used as efficient catalysts for oxidative coupling of aliphatic, aromatic and heteroaromatic thiols to their disulfides in the presence of NaI under air atmosphere.     

A new joint model for longitudinal and survival data with a cure fraction

We develop a new joint cure rate model for longitudinal and survival data. The model allows for multiple longitudinal markers as well as a cure structure for the survival component based on the promotion time cure rate model, as described in Ibrahim et al. (Bayesian Survival Analysis, Springer, New York, 2001). Several characteristics and properties of the new model are discussed and examined. A real dataset from a melanoma clinical trial is given to demonstrate the methodology.     

Enumeration of one-nodal rational curves in projective spaces

We give a formula computing the number of one-nodal rational curves that pass through an appropriate collection of constraints in a complex projective space. The formula involves intersections of tautological classes on moduli spaces of stable rational maps. We combine the methods and results from three different papers.
