Interfacial properties play an important role in determining characteristics and performance of composite materials, especially in membrane gas separation applications. Formation of any undesirable defect at polymer-particle interface can directly influence on membrane permeability and selectivity in addition to unwanted effects on the other mechanical/physical properties. For achieving a quick insight about the role and nature of interfacial morphologies in mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) and their effects on gas transport properties, a new technique mainly in terms of mathematical modeling was developed. Based on the proposed approach, although ideal models often failed in predicting MMMs performance, these models can provide guidelines for discernment of the types of formed interfacial morphology, like current methods in characterization. 相似文献

The morphology in mixed bulk‐heterojunction films are compared using three different quantitative measurement techniques. We compare the vertical composition changes using high‐angle annular dark‐field scanning transmission electron microscopy with electron tomography and neutron and x‐ray reflectometry. The three measurement techniques yield qualitatively comparable vertical concentration measurements. The presence of a metal cathode during thermal annealing is observed to alter the fullerene concentration throughout the thickness of the film for all measurements. However, the absolute vertical concentration of fullerene is quantitatively different for the three measurements. Novel phenyl benzoate-based and biphenyl-based liquid crystalline thiol-ene monomers were synthesized and their properties investigated. By varying the bridging unit and spacer length, the type of mesophase can be tuned from the low ordered nematic and smectic A phase in the case of the phenyl benzoate-based monomers, to the highly ordered crystal E phase for the biphenyl-based monomers and their corresponding bromo precursors. We investigated the degree of order of the phenyl benzoate-based materials using the Haller method. Possible premature polymerization of these monomers was examined by size exclusion chromatography. The materials exhibit low transition temperatures and a high stability at typical handling times and temperatures. Consequently, these monomers are useful for in situ polymerization with anisotropic inert solvents, which could potentially lead to new architectures and enhanced electro-optical properties of devices. The use of the biphenyl-based monomers appears to be of limited use for polymerizations in anisotropic solution. However, as a result of their intrinsic high degree of molecular order, these monomers form a particularly interesting class of reactive materials that can be bulk polymerized to give main chain polymers with highly defined mechanical and optical or electro-optical properties. 相似文献

The problem of chemical order of polyamide-hydrazides prepared from terephthaloyl chloride with an unsymmetrical monomer, p-aminobenzhydrazide, is discussed. An NMR method for identifying the molecular structure of species formed in the early stages of poly condensation has enabled the course of a polymerization to be followed during this time and the final degree of order to be predicted qualitatively. These studies have provided a demonstration that the structure of these polymers can be controlled to a significant degree by appropriate variations in experimental conditions. But even under the most adverse conditions usually employed, poly amide-hydrazides are found to be at least “partially ordered” copolymers. The techniques developed for this study may find application in the study of other polymer forming reactions with monomers having two functional groups with dissimilar reactivities. 相似文献

This paper describes the effect of corona discharge on cadmium sulphide (CdS) and lead sulphide (PbS) films prepared using the chemical route. The property of films before and after exposure to corona has been described in detail. The electronic properties of the CdS and PbS films have been studied by current-voltage (I-V), capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements. The structural properties and surface morphology were studied by using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy before and after exposing to Corona discharge. The films displayed the change in surface morphology after exposure to the corona discharge. It has been found that the films showed an increase in resistivity after exposure. This change in property has been attributed to modification in surface states. Time-dependent recovery indicated that room temperature annealing is sufficient to regain the normal resistivity of the films. The experiment was carried with the aim of studying the effect of the interaction of corona discharge on the semiconductor films and its subsequent effects. 相似文献

Reactive blends prepared from methoxysilane terminated silicone polymers and silylated soybean oil are described and characterized. Although simple mixing of soy and silicones results in gross phase separation, homogeneous polymeric products are obtained by introducing reactive sites. These products can be used as protective coatings, additives to adhesives and new sealants. Exposure of the mixtures to moisture leads to hydrolysis of the methoxysilanes and subsequent condensation of the resulting silanols that yields stable siloxane linkages between the two immiscible phases. FTIR, TGA, and swell‐gel analyses indicate effective formation of these siloxane crosslinks. Reactive blends containing less than 20% silylated oil appeared completely transparent but increasing the soy content decreased the optical transparency. SEM micrographs reveal the silicone polymer as the continuous phase with individual spherical silylated soy oil particles distributed in it. The properties of these reactive blends vary from high elongation elastomers to high modulus resins depending on the composition. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Modification of the polymer–polymer interfacial tension is a way to tailor‐make particle morphology of waterborne polymer–polymer hybrids. This allows achieving a broader spectrum of application properties and maximizing the synergy of the positive properties of both polymers, avoiding their drawbacks. In situ formation of graft copolymer during polymerization is an efficient way to modify the polymer–polymer interfacial tension. Currently, no dynamic model is available for polymer–polymer hybrids in which a graft copolymer is generated during polymerization. In this article, a novel model based on stochastic dynamics is developed for predicting the dynamics of the development of particle morphology for composite waterborne systems in which a graft copolymer is produced in situ during the process. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(L-lactic acid)/polybutadiene (PLA/PB) biodegradable multiblock elastomers was synthesized and characterized. A two-step process to prepare PLA/PB multiblock elastomers was applied. Melt polymerization was used to prepare poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA) terminated with hydroxyl groups and, at the same time, hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) and 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) were employed to synthesize diisocyanate-terminated polybutadiene (ITPB). Then, PLA and ITPB were reacted with different PLA/PB weight ratios. Consequently, a series of PLA/PB biodegradable poly(ester-urethane)s with crosslinked chains was obtained. Swelling characteristics and crosslink density of the crosslinked elastomer were investigated. DMA was applied to characterize its thermal properties. The measurement of mechanical properties showed that a PLA/PB elastomer with adjustable mechanical properties was synthesized. Micromorphology, hydrophobicity, and degradability of the material were also characterized. 相似文献

Copolymers of n‐butyl acrylate and phosphonium ionic liquid monomers possessing various alkyl substituents and counterions were synthesized through a combination of conventional free radical copolymerization and anion exchange. Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis provided the thermal and mechanical properties of these phosphonium cation‐containing random copolymers. Factors including alkyl chain length of phosphonium substituents, counterion type, as well as ionic concentration significantly influenced the association of phosphonium cations. Phosphonium ionomers with trialkyl substituents on phosphonium cations did not display the characteristic small‐angle X‐ray scattering peak, suggesting the absence of ionic clusters. However, low q peaks in wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction was indicative of significant concentration fluctuations wherein the ionic monomeric units associated. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. When a mixture of liquid crystal (LC) and photo reactive monomer is irradiated by UV light, polymerization occurs and LC droplets form through phase separation, producing polymer dispersed LCs (PDLCs). Although size control of LC droplets and reduced amounts of LC in PDLC films are important in applications, precise size control of LC droplets at a low LC fraction has not yet been accomplished. In this study, the phase diagrams of the LC/initial monomer and the LC/polymer during polymerization were used to control LC droplet size at various LC fractions. Both the relative position of the sample in the initial phase diagram and the shift of the phase separation line during polymerization were shown to be important in determining the size of LC droplets. Our results are expected to provide a new strategy for precise size control of LC droplets especially at a low LC fraction range, which would be a great help for PDLC applications. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
