Synthesis of glyoxylyl peptides using a phosphine labile α,α′-diaminoacetic acid derivative

We describe in this letter the preparation of a novel protected α,α′-diaminoacetic acid derivative that acts as a masked glyoxylic acid equivalent. The reagent could easily be introduced on a peptide chain using standard Fmoc/tert-butyl solid-phase methods and resisted to the TFA treatment allowing the deprotection and cleavage of the peptide. Unmasking of the glyoxylyl group was performed in solution in the presence of a phosphine.     

A new strategy for the stereoselective synthesis of unnatural α-amino acids

A new method for the synthesis of racemic non-proteinogenic α-amino acids has been developed, which involves (i) hetero-Diels-Alder addition of ethyl 2-nitrosoacrylate to electron rich alkenes such as enol ethers, enamines and allylsilanes, (ii) NaCNBH₃ reduction of the CN bond in the oxazines thus generated, the stereochemistry of the products being controlled by epimerisation of the thermodynamically less stable isomer to the more stable one, (iii) protection of the N-H group as N-Boc and (iv) finally, N-O bond cleavage of both free and protected products to give proline or bis-homoserine derivatives, respectively. An example with concomitant reduction of the carboxylate group, resulting in the formation of the respective amino alcohol is reported. Applying this methodology to a homochiral enol ether, the protected parent d-proline was prepared in enantiomerically pure form, whereas the asymmetric synthesis of the respective bis-homoserine was unsuccessful.     

A new method for the synthesis of 2-cyclopenten-1-one-5-carboxylic ester derivatives via Rh2(OAc)4-mediated intramolecular C-H insertion reaction of 4Z-β-vinyl-α-diazo β-ketoesters

2-Cyclopenten-1-one-5-carboxylic ester derivatives 14 are synthesized in a four-step-reaction sequence starting from alkynyl aldehydes 9 via 4Z-β-vinyl-α-diazo β-ketoesters intermediate 8. The synthetic method for 8 is described. When the δ substituent is an alkyl group, Rh(II)-mediated decomposition of the diazo compounds 8 led to an intramolecular C-H insertion to afford 2-cyclopenten-1-one-5-carboxylic ester derivatives 14 in high yields. When the δ substituent is an aryl group, 2-hydroxynaphthoate 15 is obtained exclusively. In both cases, no Wolff rearrangement product was observed.     

Existence and data dependence of fixed points for multivalued operators on gauge spaces

The purpose of this note is to present some fixed point and data dependence theorems in complete gauge spaces and in hyperconvex metric spaces for the so-called Meir-Keeler multivalued operators and admissible multivalued aα-contractions. Our results extend and generalize several theorems of Espínola and Kirk [R. Espínola, W.A. Kirk, Set-valued contractions and fixed points, Nonlinear Anal. 54 (2003) 485-494] and Rus, Petru?el, and Sînt?m?rian [I.A. Rus, A. Petru?el, A. Sînt?m?rian, Data dependence of the fixed point set of some multivalued weakly Picard operators, Nonlinear Anal. 52 (2003) 1947-1959].

Status of the lattice and τ decay determinations of αs

The two highest precision determinations of α s （M 2 Z ）,that based on the analysis of short-distancesensitive lattice observables,and that based on an analysis of hadronic τ decay data,have,until very recently,given results which are not in good agreement.I review new versions of these analyses which bring the two determinations into excellent agreement,and discuss prospects for additional future improvements.     

X-ray photoelectron spectra of platinum compounds excited with monochromatic AgLα irradiation

Non-monochromatic MgK_α and monochromatic AgL_α irradiations were used to measure Pt4f and Pt3d_5/2 X-ray photoelectron spectra from platinum black and from several platinum compounds with different Pt oxidation states. The Pt3d_5/2 core level binding energies from platinum compounds were measured for the first time. Potential of these data to XPS study of Pt/Al₂O₃ catalysts is demonstrated.     

Comparison of α-chloralose,medetomidine and isoflurane anesthesia for functional connectivity mapping in the rat

Functional connectivity measures based upon low-frequency blood-oxygenation-level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD fMRI) signal fluctuations have become a widely used tool for investigating spontaneous brain activity in humans. Still unknown, however, is the precise relationship between neural activity, the hemodynamic response and fluctuations in the MRI signal. Recent work from several groups had shown that correlated low-frequency fluctuations in the BOLD signal can be detected in the anesthetized rat — a first step toward elucidating this relationship. Building on this preliminary work, through this study, we demonstrate that functional connectivity observed in the rat depends strongly on the type of anesthesia used. Power spectra of spontaneous fluctuations and the cross-correlation-based connectivity maps from rats anesthetized with α-chloralose, medetomidine or isoflurane are presented using a high-temporal-resolution imaging sequence that ensures minimal contamination from physiological noise. The results show less localized correlation in rats anesthetized with isoflurane as compared with rats anesthetized with α-chloralose or medetomidine. These experiments highlight the utility of using different types of anesthesia to explore the fundamental physiological relationships of the BOLD signal and suggest that the mechanisms contributing to functional connectivity involve a complicated relationship between changes in neural activity, neurovascular coupling and vascular reactivity.
