Novel copolymers composed of a styrene (St) derivative bearing a vicinal tricarbonyl moiety and various vinyl monomers such as St, methyl methacrylate (MMA), and N‐vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) were synthesized by (1) radical copolymerization of a St derivative with a 1,3‐diketone structure with St, MMA, and NVP and (2) successive oxidation of the resulting copolymers with N‐bromosuccinimide in DMSO to convert their 1,3‐diketone moieties in the side chains into the corresponding vicinal tricarbonyl moieties. Their tricarbonyl moieties were readily hydrated in water‐containing acetone to generate the corresponding copolymers bearing geminal diol structures in the side chains. On the other hand, heating the resulting copolymers bearing the geminal diol structures in vacuo‐enabled successful recovery of the vicinal tricarbonyl moieties to demonstrate the reversible nature of this system. We report on the controlled free radical homopolymerization of 1‐ferrocenylethyl acrylate as well as of three new ferrocene bearing monomers, namely 4‐ferrocenylbutyl acrylate, 2‐ferrocenylamido‐2‐methylpropyl acrylate, and 4‐ferrocenylbutyl methacrylate, by the RAFT technique. For comparison, the latter monomer was polymerized using ATRP, too. The ferrocene containing monomers were found to be less reactive than their analogues free of ferrocene. The reasons for the low polymerizability are not entirely clear. As the addition of free ferrocene to the reaction mixture did not notably affect the polymerizations, sterical hindrance by the bulky ferrocene moiety fixed on the monomers seems to be the most probable explanation. Molar masses found for 1‐ferrocenylethyl acrylate did not exceed 10,000 g mol?1, while for 4‐ferrocenylbutyl (meth)acrylate molar masses of 15,000 g mol?1 could be obtained. Copolymers of n‐butyl acrylate and phosphonium ionic liquid monomers possessing various alkyl substituents and counterions were synthesized through a combination of conventional free radical copolymerization and anion exchange. Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis provided the thermal and mechanical properties of these phosphonium cation‐containing random copolymers. Factors including alkyl chain length of phosphonium substituents, counterion type, as well as ionic concentration significantly influenced the association of phosphonium cations. Phosphonium ionomers with trialkyl substituents on phosphonium cations did not display the characteristic small‐angle X‐ray scattering peak, suggesting the absence of ionic clusters. However, low q peaks in wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction was indicative of significant concentration fluctuations wherein the ionic monomeric units associated. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, we succeeded in the in situ activation of nonactivated ester moieties embedded in polymer structures. Although poly(pentafluorophenyl methacrylate) (PPFPMA) can react with 2‐ethylhexylamine at 50 °C in the presence of proton scavenger such as NEt3, such conditions were not suitable for poly(phenyl methacrylate) (PPhMA). Nevertheless, the combination of organo‐activating agents, namely 1,8‐diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec‐7‐ene (DBU) and 1,2,4‐triazole (TZ) led to a facile conversion from ester to amide for PPhMA. The reaction between PPhMA and 2‐ethylhexylamine was conducted at 120 °C in the presence of one equivalent of TZ and three equivalents of DBU and yielded >99% ester conversion to afford corresponding polymethacrylamide derivatives as confirmed by FT‐IR and 1H NMR measurements. In addition, poly(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate) (PTFEMA) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were also allowed to react with amines in the presence of the organo‐activating agents with dramatically increased conversions (>70%). © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Low-molecular weight linear poly(glycidyl ether)s are typically synthesized via the “classical,” oxy-anionic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of glycidyl ether monomers at elevated temperatures. To reduce reaction times, a fast process was developed to synthesize oligo(glycidyl ether)s (OGEs) in bulk at a gram-scale utilizing microwave heating. Well-defined thermoresponsive copolymers comprising glycidyl methyl ether and ethyl glycidyl ether with molecular weights of up to 3 kDa were synthesized via microwave-assisted ROP with reaction times of approximately 10 min. The fast reaction kinetics were attributed to the rapid and uniform heating and high temperatures reached during the reaction. Consequently, no significant microwave-specific acceleration of the oxy-anionic ROP was observed. The temperature-triggered phase transition of the OGEs in aqueous solution revealed cloud point temperatures that are highly dependent on the OGE molecular weight, concentration, and comonomer composition, which extends previously reported data. Furthermore, oligo(glycidyl ether) acrylates (OGEAs) with reactive, functional end groups were directly accessible via in situ quenching of the anionic, microwave-assisted ROP with acrylic acid chloride. The obtained thermoresponsive OGEA macromonomers represent a promising material for the functionalization of surfaces via radical grafting methods to obtain functional, thermoresponsive coatings with potential application in cell culture. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel, sensitive and rapid ultra‐performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometric method for the quantification of chikusetsusaponin IVa (CHS‐IVa) in rat plasma was established and validated. Plasma samples were pre‐treated by precipitation of protein with acetonitrile and chromatographed on a Waters Symmetry C18 analytical column (4.6 × 50 mm, i.d., 3.5 μm) using a mobile phase consisting of methanol and water containing 0.05% formic acid (55:45, v/v) at a flow rate of 0.4 mL/min. The deprotonated molecular ions [M ? H] were employed in electrospray negative ionization mode and selected reaction monitoring transitions were performed for detection. The calibration curves exhibited good linearity (r > 0.99) over the range of 0.5–1000 ng/mL for CHS‐IVa. The recoveries of CHS‐IVa were >92.5% and exhibited no severe matrix effect. This method was successfully applied in the pharmacokinetic study of CHS‐IVa in rats. For oral administration, the plasma concentrations of CHS‐IVa increased to a peak value at 0.35 ± 0.14 h, followed by a gradual decrease to the lower limit of quantitation in 24 h. For intravenous administration, the plasma concentrations of CHS‐IVa decreased quickly (t1/2, 1.59 ± 0.25 h). The absolute bioavailability of CHS‐IVa in rats was 8.63%. A sensitive, rapid and selective ultra‐performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometric (UPLC‐MS/MS) method was developed for the determination and pharmacokinetic study of domperidone in human plasma. Diphenhydramine was used as the internal standard. Plasma sample pretreatment involved a one‐step liquid–liquid extraction with a mixture of diethyl ether–dichloromethane (3:2, v/v). The analysis was carried out on an Acquity UPLCTM BEH C18 column. The mobile phase consisted of methanol–water containing 10 mmol/L ammonium acetate and 0.5% (v/v) formic acid (60:40, v/v). The detection was performed on a triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometer in multiple reaction monitoring mode via electrospray ionizationsource with positive mode. Each plasma sample was chromatographed within 2.1 min. The standard curves for domperidone were linear (r2 ≥ 0.99) over the concentration range of 0.030–31.5 ng/mL with a lower limit of quantification of 0.030 ng/mL. The intra‐ and inter‐day precision (relative standard deviation) values were not higher than 13% and accuracy (relative error) was from ?7.6 to 1.2% at three quality control levels. The method herein described was superior to previous methods and was successfully applied to the pharmacokinetic study of domperidone in healthy Chinese volunteers after oral administration. The present investigation describes the development and validation of a sensitive liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC‐MS/MS) method for the estimation of dorsomorphin in rat plasma. A sensitive LC‐MS/MS method was developed using multiple reaction monitoring mode, with the transition of m/z (Q1/Q3) 400.2/289.3 for dorsomorphin and m/z (Q1/Q3) 306.2/236.3 for zaleplon. Chromatographic separation was achieved on a reverse phase Agilent XDB C18 column (100 × 4.6 mm, 5 µm). The mobile phase consisted of acetonitrile and 5 mm ammonium acetate buffer (pH 6.0) 90:10 v/v, at a flow rate of 0.8 mL/min. The effluence was ionized in positive ion mode by electrospray ionization (ESI) and quantitated by mass spectrometry. The retention times of dorsomorphin and internal standard were found to be 2.13 and 1.13 min, respectively. Mean extraction recovery of dorsomorphin and internal standard in rat plasma was above 80%. Dorsomorphin calibration curve in rat plasma was linear (r2 ≥ 0.99) ranging from 0.005 to 10 µg/mL. Inter‐day and intra‐day precision and accuracy were found to be within 85–115% (coefficient of variation). An improved, simple and highly sensitive LC‐MS/MS method has been developed and validated for quantification of febuxostat with 100 μL human plasma using febuxostat‐d7 as an internal standard (IS) according to regulatory guidelines. The analyte and IS were extracted from human plasma via liquid–liquid extraction using diethyl ether. The chromatographic separation was achieved on a Zorbax C18 column using a mixture of acetonitrile and 5 mm ammonium formate (60:40, v/v) as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.5 mL/min. The total run time was 5.0 min and the elution of febuxostat and IS occurred at 1.0 and 1.5 min, respectively. A linear response function was established for the range of concentrations 1–6000 ng/mL (r > 0.99). The precursor to product ion transitions monitored for febuxostat and IS were m/z 317.1 → 261.1 and 324.2 → 262.1, respectively. The intra‐ and inter‐day precisions (%RSD) were within 1.29–9.19 and 2.85–7.69%, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied to pharmacokinetic studies in humans.
