Natural zeolite clinoptilolite was successfully applied in the sensing technology for electrochemical detection of ammonium. A novel ammonium-selective sensor was developed based on clinoptilolite, possessing intrinsic ammonium-sieving and ion exchange capacity. The sensor design allowed measurements in both differential mode and requiring no classical reference electrode. The sensor selectivity towards Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, and Al3+ was studied. The limit of detection and the dynamic range of the ammonium-selective conductometric microsensor, determined in the phosphate buffer solution, were 1.0 × 10?8 M and 0–8 mM, respectively. The addition of plasticizer to the polyethylene oxide (PEO)-ammonium fluoride (NH4F) polymer electrolytes has been found to result in an increase in conductivity value and the magnitude of increase has been found to depend upon the dielectric constant of the plasticizer used. The addition of dimethylacetamide as a plasticizer with dielectric constant (?=37.8) higher than that of PEO (?∼5) results in an increase of conductivity by more than three orders of magnitude whereas the addition of diethylcarbonate as a plasticizer with dielectric constant (?=2.82) lower than that of PEO does not enhance the conductivity of PEO-NH4F polymer electrolytes. The increase in conductivity has further been found to depend upon the concentration of plasticizer, the concentration of salt in the polymer electrolyte as well as on the dielectric constant value of the plasticizer used. The conductivity modification with the addition of plasticizer has been explained on the basis of dissociation of ion aggregates formed in PEO-NH4F polymer electrolytes at higher salt concentrations. 相似文献

In an attempt to establish the criteria for the length of simulation to achieve the desired convergence of free energy calculations, two studies were carried out on chosen complexes of FBPase‐AMP mimics. Calculations were performed for varied length of simulations and for different starting configurations using both conventional‐ and QM/MM‐FEP methods. The results demonstrate that for small perturbations, 1248 ps simulation time could be regarded a reasonable yardstick to achieve convergence of the results. As the simulation time is extended, the errors associated with free energy calculations also gradually tapers off. Moreover, when starting the simulation from different initial configurations of the systems, the results are not changed significantly, when performed for 1248 ps. This study carried on FBPase‐AMP mimics corroborates well with our previous successful demonstration of requirement of simulation time for solvation studies, both by conventional and ab initio FEP. The establishment of aforementioned criteria of simulation length serves a useful benchmark in drug design efforts using FEP methodologies, to draw a meaningful and unequivocal conclusion. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. MntA from Lactobacillus plantarum and copA from Enterococcus hirae both encode membrane proteins that are members of the P-type family of adenosine triphosphatases (ATPases). Both transporters
act as metal importers to take up nutritionally required substrates; MntA translocates Mn(II) and CopA translocates Cu(I).
Both ATPases can also translocate secondary substrates, Cd(II) and Ag(I), respectively. Although functionally and sequentially
similar, these ATPases differ in several key residues and in their membrane topologies. The bioaccumulation properties of
these two proteins were examined by coexpressing the transporters with overexpressed metallothionein in Escherichia coli cells, a system that has previously shown high levels of substrate-specific uptake. Both strains exhibited rapid metal accumulation,
both saturated at around 50 μM metal, and both displayed temperature-sensitive uptake. However, the transporters responded differently when external conditions
were varied; MntA displayed increased sensitivity to ionic strength, while CopA was more pH sensitive and more inhibited by
chelating agents. The differences in accumulation are likely owing to structural differences in the transmembrane region of

The 25% niobium substituted crystalline titanosilicate with the composition Na1.5Nb0.5Ti1.5O3SiO4·2H2O (Nb-TS) was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Its selectivity for radioactive 137Cs and 89Sr was compared with the TS, Na2Ti2O3SiO4·2H2O, having sitinakite topology. The Nb-TS shows significantly higher uptake value for 137Cs but lower for 89Sr than the TS. To investigate the origin of selectivity, the ion exchanged Cs+ and Sr2+ forms with the composition, CsxNaHyNb0.5Ti1.5O3SiO4·zH2O (x=0.1, 0.2 and 0.3, x+y=0.5 and z=1-2) and Sr0.2Na0.6H0.5Nb0.5Ti1.5O3SiO4·H2O, respectively, were structurally characterized from the X-ray powder diffraction data using the Rietveld refinement technique. Simultaneously the kinetics of 137Cs and 89Sr uptake was investigated for the NbV free and doped samples. While the Cs+ and Sr2+ exchanged form of Nb-TS and the Cs+ exchanged form of TS retain the symmetry of the parent compound, the Sr2+ exchanged form of TS undergoes a symmetry change. The differences in the uptake of Cs+ and Sr2+ result from the different coordination environments of cesium and strontium in the eight-ring channel, that result from various hydration sites in the tunnel. The origin of selectivity appears to arise from the higher coordination number of cesium or strontium. Other effects due to NbV substitution are reflected in the increase of both, the a- and c-dimensions and thus the unit cell volume, and the population of water vs. Na+ in the channel to charge-balance the Nb5+↔Ti4+ substitution. 相似文献

Measurements of the equilibrium degree of swelling and of the equilibrium modulus were performed on poly(dimethylsiloxane) networks (PDMS) and on polyisoprene vulcanizates. The results support the concept that topological interactions between network chains, e.g. entanglements or the like, have a large influence on the rubber elastic behavior, at least within a certain range of network densities.PDMS networks having network chains of different lengths and varying functionlities of the crosslinks were prepared in bulk by endlinking fractionated ,-divinyl PDMS via multifunctional hydrogen-siloxanes (f=3 to 22). Natural rubber (NR) and synthetic liquid polyisoprene (IR) were cured in bulk with various amounts of dicumyl peroxide to give randomly crosslinked samples.The experimentally determined moduli and degrees of swelling were compared with theoretical predictions based on the phantom network theory and affine network theory, taking into account only chemical crosslinks. The observed discrepancies can be traced back to a contribution of topological interactions (trapped entanglements) to the total effective network density. The modulus and swelling data are consistent, thus ruling out non-equilibrium effects. 相似文献

Dietary polyphenols are a group of natural compounds that have been proposed to have beneficial effects on human health. They were first known for their antioxidant properties, but several studies over the years have shown that these compounds can exert protective effects against chronic diseases. Nonetheless, the mechanisms underlying these potential benefits are still uncertain and contradictory effects have been reported. In this review, we analyze the potential effects of polyphenol compounds on some visual diseases, with a special focus on retinal degenerative diseases. Current effective therapies for the treatment of such retinal diseases are lacking and new strategies need to be developed. For this reason, there is currently a renewed interest in finding novel ligands (or known ligands with previously unexpected features) that could bind to retinal photoreceptors and modulate their molecular properties. Some polyphenols, especially flavonoids (e.g., quercetin and tannic acid), could attenuate light-induced receptor damage and promote visual health benefits. Recent evidence suggests that certain flavonoids could help stabilize the correctly folded conformation of the visual photoreceptor protein rhodopsin and offset the deleterious effect of retinitis pigmentosa mutations. In this regard, certain polyphenols, like the flavonoids mentioned before, have been shown to improve the stability, expression, regeneration and folding of rhodopsin mutants in experimental in vitro studies. Moreover, these compounds appear to improve the integration of the receptor into the cell membrane while acting against oxidative stress at the same time. We anticipate that polyphenol compounds can be used to target visual photoreceptor proteins, such as rhodopsin, in a way that has only been recently proposed and that these can be used in novel approaches for the treatment of retinal degenerative diseases like retinitis pigmentosa; however, studies in this field are limited and further research is needed in order to properly characterize the effects of these compounds on retinal degenerative diseases through the proposed mechanisms. 相似文献
