Fabrication and performance of a three-dimensionally adjustable device for the amperometric detection of microchip capillary electrophoresis

A microchip CE-amperometric detection (AD) system has been fabricated by integrating a two-dimensionally adjustable CE microchip and an AD cell containing a one-dimensionally adjustable disk detection electrode in a Plexiglas holder. It facilitates the precise 3-D alignment between the channel outlet and the detection electrode without a complicated 3-D manipulator. The performance of this unique system was demonstrated by separating five aromatic amines (1,4-phenyldiamine, aniline, 2-methylaniline, 4-chloroaniline, and 1-naphthylamine) of environmental concern. Factors influencing their separation and detection processes were examined and optimized. The five analytes have been well separated within 140 s in a 74 cm long separation channel at a separation voltage of +2500 V using a 10 mM phosphate buffer (pH 3.5). Highly linear response is obtained for the five analytes over the range 20-200 microM with the detection limits ranging from 0.46 to 1.44 microM, respectively. The present system demonstrated long-term stability and reproducibility with RSDs of less than 5% for the peak current (n = 9). The new approach for the microchannel-electrode alignment should find a wide range of applications in CE, flowing injection analysis, and other microfluidic analysis systems.     

Neighbouring group participation in formation of condensed azines. Formation of pyrazolo(3,4-b)pyrazines,isoxazolo(4,5-b)pyrazines and isothiazolo(5,4-b)pyridine

Pyrazine- and pyridinecarboxamidoximes with an amino, potentially tautomeric hydroxy or mercapto group inortho position could be transformed in the appropriate condensed azines. In this manner, representatives of pyrazolo(3,4-b)pyrazine, isoxazolo(4,5-b)pyrazine and isothiazolo(5,4-b)pyridine ring system were synthesized and some transformations investigated.Presented in part at the 8th International Congress of Heterocyclic Chemistry, Graz, 1981.     

Spin density distributions in radical anions of heterocyclic amine N-oxides

The unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) method of Snyder and Amos is used to calculate, in the -electron approximation, the spin density distributions in radical anions of heterocyclic amine N-oxides. The computed spin densities are observed to be in good agreement with the experimental values. The computed spin density distribution of the radical anion of pyridine N-oxide is consistent with the greater susceptibility of pyridine N-oxide relative to pyridine to electrophilic nitration. Also, the calculations are consistent with the lower basicity of the N-oxides relative to the parent bases.     

Crystal Structures of 1,5,9,18,22,26-Hexaaza[11.11]-p-cyclophane Adducts; Two-dimensional Supramolecular Networks

Two newly identified supramolecular structures arise from self-assembly of the macrocyclic 1,5,9,18,22,26- hexaaza[11.11]-p-cyclophane salts with o-nitrophenol (C₂₈H₅₀N₆)⁴⁺·4(C₆H₄NO₂O)⁻ (1) and with HCl (C₂₈H₅₂N₆)⁶⁺·6Cl^-·4H₂O (2). In both cases two-dimensional supramolecular sheets are formed.     

Simple route to secondary amides of phosphorylacetic acids and their use for extraction and sorption of actinides from nitric acid solutions

An efficient method for the synthesis of secondary alkylamides of phosphorylacetic acids (APA) was proposed. The method involves amidation of ethyl phosphorylacetates with primary aliphatic amines. The scope of reaction was determined. Reactions with ethylenediamine and 1,4-diaminobutane yield the corresponding bisamides; in the case of 1,3-diaminopropane, N-(3-aminopropyl)diphenylphosphorylacetamide or N,N-propylenebis(diphenylphosphorylacetamide) was obtained, depending on the reaction conditions. The extraction of americium(III) complexes and the sorption of uranium(VI) by sorbents with physically sorbed APA from nitric acid solutions were studied. There is no correlation between the partition coefficient of americium(III) and the structure of APA; in the sorption of uranium(VI), the degree of extraction depends on the complexone structure.__________Published in Russian in Izvestiya Akademii Nauk. Asymmetric synthesis of 1-substituted-1-(pyridin-2-yl)methylamines by diastereoselective reduction of enantiopure N-p-toluenesulfinyl ketimines

Reduction of enantiopure N-p-toluenesulfinyl ketimines derived from 2-pyridyl ketones affords N-p-toluenesulfinyl amines with good yields and diastereoselectivities.     

Synthesis,Spectral and Magnetic Properties,and Crystal Structures of Copper(II) Pyridinecarboxylate Adducts with N‐Heterocyclic Ligands

Synthesis and characterization of seven new complexes [Cu(2‐MeSnic)₂(CH₃OH)]₂ (where 2‐MeSnic is 2‐methylthionicotinate), [Cu(2‐MeSnic)₂L₂]₂ (where L is pyridine — py, ethylnicotinate — Etnic and butylnicotinate — Bunic), [Cu(2‐MeSnic)₂L₂(H₂O)₂] (where L is py and nicotinamide — nia) and [Cu(2‐MeSnic)₂(N‐Menia)₂(H₂O)₂]·2H₂O (where N‐Menia is N‐methylnicotinamide) are reported. The characterization were based on elemental analysis, infrared, electronic and EPR spectra, and magnetic susceptibility measurements over a temperature range of 1.8 — 300 K or 70 — 300 K. Three complexes of different type were studied by X‐ray analysis. The molecule of [Cu(2‐MeSnic)₂(CH₃OH)]₂ has dimeric paddle‐wheel cage structure with a tetragonal pyramidal arrangement around Cu^II. The dimer results from the fact that carboxyl groups of four 2‐MeSnic anions function as bridging in a syn‐syn arrangement. On the other hand [Cu(2‐MeSnic)₂(py)₂]₂ forms dimers with hexacoordinated Cu^II atoms in highly distorted coordination octahedra, each with two oxygen atoms of bridging carboxyl groups in an anti‐anti arrangement of two 2‐MeSnic anions, with two oxygen atoms of one asymmetrically chelating 2‐MeSnic anion and with two nitrogen atoms of two pyridine ligands. The temperature independent EPR spectrum for this complex exhibits an axial signal which corresponds to almost isolated S = ¹/₂ magnetic ions. Magnetic data for the dimer show a weak antiferromagnetic interaction between the two metal ions with J = —0.65 cm^—1. The Cu^II atom in complex [Cu(2‐MeSnic)₂(py)₂(H₂O)₂] is hexacoordinated in an elongated centrosymmetrical tetragonal‐bipyramidal arrangement (4 + 2). Based on the molecular structure the electronic, infrared, electron paramagnetic resonance spectra and magnetic properties are discussed and stereochemistry as well as the mode of ligand coordination in new solid complexes under study have been determined.     

Enantiomeric Separation of Adrenergic Amines in Citrus Species, Related Genera and Dietary Supplements by Capillary Electrophoresis

Citrus aurantium L. (Rutaceae) fruit extracts have recently been used for weight loss. Among the adrenergic amines the most important active constituent is the sympathomimetic compound synephrine and commercially available extracts are standardized for their content of this active principle. A capillary electrophoresis method was developed for the quantitative and qualitative determination of d-synephrine, l-synephrine, d-octopamine, l-octopamine, tyramine, n-methyl tyramine and hordenine. The electrophoretic separation was performed using a 75 cm × 50 µm ID (66.5 cm effective length) fused silica capillary. The samples were injected by pressure for 5s at 50 mbar and the running voltage was 30 kV at the injector end of the capillary. The method developed was successively applied to the determination of the adrenergic amines in dietary supplements, in various Citrus species including Citrus aurantium, jams and juices. Synephrine was the main component and present in the levels from 0.02–0.17% in various Citrus species and 0.42–69.28 mg in dietary supplements claiming to contain Citrus aurantium. Parameters affecting the resolution between (+) and (−)-enantiomers, such as pH, cyclodextrin concentration, temperature, organic modifier, buffer concentration and capillary dimensions were reported.     

A new method for the synthesis of n-(2-aminoethyl)azoles by alkylation of azoles with 2-alkyl-4,5-dihydrooxazoles

Ring opening in 2-alkyl-4,5-dihydrooxazoles by the action of azoles gave intermediate N-(2-azolylethyl)alkanamides, whose hydrolysis afforded N-(2-aminoethyl)azoles. Published in Russian in Izvestiya Akademii Nauk. Seriya Khimicheskaya, No. 10, pp. 1781–1784, October, 2006.     

The Formation of C?C Bonds with the Aid of α-Halogeno Ethers,Sulfides, and Amines

α-Halogeno ethers, sulfides, and amines are reactive compounds which can be used for the formation of new C? C bonds, either as nucleophilic or as electrophilic reagents, or by α-elimination. The use of these compounds in the synthesis of many classes of organic compounds is reviewed.
