Anomalous hydroalumination of methyl nopol ether with a LiAlH4-3AlBr3 system

Hydroalumination of methyl nopol ether with a LiAlH₄-3AlBr₃ system is accompanied by a skeleton rearrangement and gives 6-dibromoalumo-7-methoxymethyl-2-menthene. Further hydroalumination affords a mixture of 2,6- and 2,5-bis(dibromoalumo)-7-(methoxymethyl)menthanes in 8020 ratio. An indexed set of density bounds on lattice packings

It has long been known that the admissibility of a lattice with respect to a symmetric convex bodyB is equivalent to being a packing lattice for 1/2B. This fact is the basis of the interplay between the classical theory of the arithmetic minima of positive definite quadratic forms, on the one hand, and the dense lattice packing of spheres inR ⁿ , on the other.We give an indexed set of bounds _L (B) a _j , where 0 j n/2, on the lattice packing density ofB. The casej=0 reduces to the aforementioned long-known fact, andj=1 was proved by Elkies, Odlyzko, and Rush, and was used to obtain record high packing densities for various superballs. The new cases make possible the use of smaller primes in the construction of these dense packings.Supported by National Science Foundation grant DMS-9103233.     

Filtering on manifolds

We coasider a partially observable diffusion process (x _t,y_t)t0 whose unobservable componentx _t lives on a submanifold M ofR ⁿ . We present some general conditions under which the conditional law ofx _t, given the observationsy _s ,s [0,t], admits a density w.r.t. a given measure on M. We characterize the analytical properties of this density by using appropriate Sobolev spaces.Research supported by the Hungarian National Foundation of Scientific Research No. 2290.     

Determination of the partition coefficients of the nonionic detergent C12E7 between lipid-detergent mixed membranes and water by means of Laurdan fluorescence spectroscopy

The membrane-water partition coefficient of the detergent C₁₂E₇ between water and C₁₂E₇/POPC mixed membranes has been determined by means of steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy. The emission spectra of the fluorescent probe Laurdan were used as an indicator of membrane composition at different membrane concentrations in the sample. The partition coefficient expressed as the ratio of the mole fractions of the detergent in the membrane and water phases is about 6^*10⁵ at low molar ratios of C₁₂E₇/POPC (R _c ) and decreases rapidly with increasingR _c . The limiting detergent content of the lamellar phase (R _c ^* >0.8) is indicated by a minimum ofP(R _c ).     

There are uncountably many universal topological planes

We prove the existence of uncountably many nonisomorphic topological projective planes, each universal in the sense that it contains an isomorphic copy of every pseudoline arrangement.     

The picture of a specific maximal monotone set

Let E be a nontrivial Banach space. The concept of picture has been used to provide a new proof of the surjectivity of S+J, for E reflexive and S: E2 ^{E *} maximal monotone. It is known that if E is reflexive, then the picture of a maximal monotone subset of E×E ^* is a singleton. We calculate an example showing that in the nonreflexive case, the picture of a maximal monotone subset can be quite substantial.     

The maximal monotonicity of the subdifferentials of convex functions: Simons' problem

In the paper we deal with the problem when the graph of the subdifferential operator of a convex lower semicontinuous function has a common point with the product of two convex nonempty weak and weak^* compact sets, i.e. when graph (Q × Q ^*) 0. The results obtained partially solve the problem posed by Simons as well as generalize the Rockafellar Maximal Monotonicity Theorem.     

Absorption and refraction phenomena in proton- and antiproton-nucleus scattering

The experimental data on the 180 MeV proton and 50, 180 MeV antiproton scattering by the nuclei¹²C,⁴⁰Ca and²⁰⁸Pb have been analysed on the basis of the phenomenological diffraction theory. The optical properties of the nuclei with regards to the incident protons and antiprotons are investigated. Various limiting cases of the proton- and antiproton-nucleus scattering are considered. The contribution of the Coulomb and the spin-orbit interactions to the differential cross sections of these processes has been also analysed.The authors are indebted to D.M. Perturbed unstable variational inequalities with unbounded operators on approximately given sets

The stability and convergence of the solutions of perturbed and regularized variational inequality to the solutions of the primary (unstable a priori) variational inequality with proper monotone operator are investigated. All the objects of inequality: the operatorA, the right-hand partf and the set of constrains are to be perturbed. At the same time no assumptions of boundedness and smoothness of the operatorA are used. The connection between the parameters of perturbations, which guarantees strong convergence of approximate solutions, is established. It is proved that the existence of the solution to the unperturbed variational inequality is necessary and sufficient condition for convergence of the regularized perturbed inequality solutions.This research was supported in part by the Ministry of Science Grant 3481-1-91 and by the Ministry of Absorption Center for Absorption in Science.
