Optimality conditions and duality theory for minimizing sums of the largest eigenvalues of symmetric matrices

The sum of the largest eigenvalues of a symmetric matrix is a nonsmooth convex function of the matrix elements. Max characterizations for this sum are established, giving a concise characterization of the subdifferential in terms of a dual matrix. This leads to a very useful characterization of the generalized gradient of the following convex composite function: the sum of the largest eigenvalues of a smooth symmetric matrix-valued function of a set of real parameters. The dual matrix provides the information required to either verify first-order optimality conditions at a point or to generate a descent direction for the eigenvalue sum from that point, splitting a multiple eigenvalue if necessary. Connections with the classical literature on sums of eigenvalues and eigenvalue perturbation theory are discussed. ON SOME INTERPRETATIONS OF CLASSICAL LOGIC

In distinction from the well-known double-negation embeddings of the classical logic we consider some variants of single-negation embeddings and describe some classes of superintuitionistic first-order predicate logics in which the classical first-order calculus is interpretable in such a way. Also we find the minimal extensions of Heyting's logic in which the classical predicate logic can be embedded by means of these translations.     

Operator Matrix Forms of Positive Operators

If a 3-tuple (A:H1→H1,B:H2→H1,C:H2→H2）of operators on Hibert spaces is given,we proved that the operator ～↑A:=(↑A ↓B^*↑B ↓C) on H=H1 H2 is ≥0 is and only if A≥0,R(B)∪→R（A^1/2) and C≥B^* A^ b,where A^ is the generalized inverse of A.In general,A^ is a closed operator,but since R(B)∪→R(A^1/2,B^* A^ B is bounded yet.     

Crossover from BCS-superconductivity to Bose-condensation

Starting from a model of free Fermions in two dimensions with an arbitrary strong effective interaction, we derive a Ginzburg-Landau theory describing the crossover from BCS-superconductivity to Bose-condensation. We find a smooth crossover from the standard BCS-limit to a Gross-Pitaevski type equation for the order parameter in a Bose superfluid. The mean field transition temperature exhibits a maximum at a coupling strength, where the behaviour crosses over from BCS to Bose like with corresponding values of 2 Δ₀/T_c ≈ 5 which are characteristic for high T_c superconductors.     

Fuzzy集的基数

关于Fuzzy集的基数，[1]中曾对有限支集的Fuzzy集以及极苛刻条件下的无限Fuzzy集给出过一种定义。但是，正如本文将要指出的那样，该定义是不合理的。本文将从研究Fuzzy映射入手，给出Fuzzy集基数的一般性定义。基于这一定义，不但得到有关基数的大部分结论，而且有其自身的特殊性。     

Influence of concentration on the activation energy for diffusion in polymer-solvent systems

The self-diffusion of benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene in polystyrene have been analyzed using the Vrentas/Duda free-volume diffusion model. Diffusion coefficient predictions suggest an exponential concentration dependence of the activation energy required to overcome attractive forces, E. Without the use of any diffusion data approximating E as zero over the entire concentration range yields self-diffusion coefficient predictions which are in good agreement with experimental data. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
