A method is reported for the industrial quality control of recycled paperboard for food contact applications. Benzophenones, phthalates, and diisopropyl naphthalene were selected as contamination markers. These compounds are commonly found in recycled paperboard packaging and are known to migrate even into dry nonfatty foods. The method was used to analyze commercial recycled board and involved sample pretreatment by accelerated solvent extraction, evaporation, and purification of the extract, and analysis by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The accelerated solvent extraction yields were compared with those obtained by Soxhlet extraction and extraction by immersion, and the recoveries of optimized procedures were estimated. The optimized method showed good repeatability, intermediate precision, and sensitivity. Because of the simplicity and partial automation, this method has potential application for the characterization of recycled paperboard.  相似文献

Abstract

Fluorescence spectra and lifetimes of ovalbumin labeled with a variety of fluorescent reagents have been measured. The peak positions of the emission spectrum and the long wavelength band of the excitation spectrum as well as the fluorescence lifetimes, are tabulated. Heterogeneity of binding sites is shown by the broadness of some emisison spectra and the presence of multiexponential decay. The atlas may serve as a guide to the properties of these dyes attached to proteins in general.  相似文献

Effects of γ-irradiation on synthetic polymers and paper used as packaging materials for irradiated food have been studied by NMR. Polystyrene, polybutadiene and some copolymers were studied before and after the γ-irradiation treatment and in the presence or absence of antioxidants and stabilisers. In the absence of additives, the effect of γ-irradiation on polystyrene is negligible even irradiating at high doses. In turn, the role of antioxidants and stabilisers is crucial in polybutadiene and butadiene-containing copolymers. Wood pulp paper was also studied by NMR. Preliminary measurements on γ-irradiated wood pulp sheets show a shortening in the T2 relaxation time component due to the bound water, i.e. some of the bound water is lost.  相似文献

Steam-activated carbons DS2 and DS5 were prepared by gasifying 600 °C-date pits carbonization products with steam at 950 °C to burn-off = 20 and 50%, respectively. The textural properties of these carbons were determined from the nitrogen adsorption at ?196 °C. The chemistry of the carbon surface was determined from the surface pH and from neutralization of the surface carbon–oxygen groups of basic and acidic type. The kinetic and equilibrium adsorption of MB and RY on DS2 and DS5 was determined at 27 and 37 °C and at initial sorption solution pH 3–7.DS2 and DS5 have expanded surface area, large total pore volume and contain both micro and mesoporosity. They have on their surface basic and acidic groups of different strength and functionality. This enhanced the sorption of the cationic dye (MB) and of the anionic dye (RY). The adsorption of MB and RY on DS2 and DS5 involves intraparticle diffusion and followed pseudo-second order kinetics. The adsorption isotherms were applicable to the Langmuir isotherm and high monolayer capacities for MB and RY dyes were evaluated indicating the high efficiencies of the carbons for dye adsorption.  相似文献

Stripping voltammetric techniques are powerful analytical tools that are becoming widely used in various chemical analysis fields. Hence, the objective of this survey is to give a general overview on the scope of the applicability of stripping voltammetric methods in food industries. The applications discussed include recent studies on the utilization of these electroanalytical methods in determination of food contaminants (toxic metals, pesticide, fertilizers and veterinary drugs residuals), trace essential elements, food additive dyes and other organic compounds of biological significance. An attempt to quantitative evaluation of the functionality of food grade chemically modified starches in the emulsion systems by estimation of their surface activity as well as the capability of thickening food products was the main purpose of this present work. It was stated that chemically modified starches reveal higher surface activity at air/water and toluene/water interfaces in comparison to the native starch. The increase of the degree of substitution of polar carboxyl groups as well as rather non-polar acetyl ones results in an enhance of surface activity. Starch sodium octenylsuccinate stands out from other investigated starches, in its excellent capability of lowering surface and interfacial tension. Cross-linked starches reveal excellent stabilisation activity at a pH range of 5.5–7.0 but their surface activity is lower than those of other modified starches. Acetylated starch as well as starch sodium octenylsuccinate reveal satisfactory thickening capability up to pH 4.5 and moreover their surface activity (especially of E 1450) allows us to recommend them as functional constituents of food emulsions. Low thickening capability of oxidised starches rather excluded these derivatives from the group of potential functional additives for food emulsions.  相似文献

This study reports multiplex sorting of Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli 0157, from broth cultures and from pathogen-spiked skinned chicken breast enrichment broths by employing microfluidic free-flow magnetophoresis. Magnetic beads of different sizes and magnetite content, namely Dynabeads anti-salmonella and Hyglos-Streptavidin beads together with the corresponding pathogen-specific biotinylated recombinant phages, were utilised as affinity solid phases for the capture and concentration of viable S. typhimurium and E. coli 0157. Following optimisation, the protocol was used to demonstrate continuous magnetophoretic sorting of the two pathogen-bound magnetic bead populations from mixed cultures and from pathogen-spiked chicken pre-enrichment broths under the influence of a Halbach magnet array. For example, in the latter case, a pure population of S. typhimurium-bound Dynabeads (72% recovery) was sorted from a 100 μL mixture containing E. coli 0157-bound Hyglos beads (67% recovery) within 1.2 min in the presence of 0.1% Tween 20. This proof-of-principle study demonstrates how more than one pathogen type can be simultaneously isolated/enriched from a single food pre-enrichment broth (e.g. Universal food enrichment broth).  相似文献

In the present study, a natural sorbent based micro-solid phase extraction (μ-SPE) was developed for determination of phthalate esters in milk samples. For the first time, an efficient and cost effective natural material (seed powder of Moringa oleifera) was employed as sorbent in μ-SPE. The sorbent was found to be naturally enriched with variety of functional groups and having a network of interconnected fibers. This method of extraction integrates different steps such as removal of proteins and fatty stuff, extraction and pre-concentration of target analytes into a single step. Thirteen phthalate esters were selected as target compounds for the development and evaluation of method. Some key parameters affecting the extraction efficiency were optimized, including selection of membrane, selection and amount of sorbent, extraction time, desorption solvent, volume of desorption solvent, desorption time and effect of salt addition. Under the optimum conditions, very good linearity was achieved for all the analytes with coefficient of determinations (R2) ranging between 0.9768 and 0.9977. The limits of detection ranged from 0.01 to 1.2 μg L−1. Proposed method showed satisfactory reproducibility with relative standard deviations ranging from 3.6% to 10.2% (n = 7). Finally, the developed method was applied to tetra pack and bottled milk samples for the determination of phthalate esters. The performance of natural sorbent based μ-SPE was better or comparable to the methods reported in the literature.  相似文献

Food poisoning causes untold discomfort to many people each year. One of the primary culprits in food poisoning is Escherichia coli O157:H7. While most cases cause intestinal discomfort, up to 7% of the incidences lead to a severe complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome which may be fatal. The traditional method for detection of E. coli O157:H7 in cases of food poisoning is to culture the food matrices and/or human stool. Additional performance-based antibody methods are also being used. The NRL array biosensor was developed to detect multiple antigens in multiple samples with little sample pretreatment in under 30 min. An assay for the specific detection of E. coli O157:H7 was developed, optimized and tested with a variety of spiked food matrices in this study. With no sample pre-enrichment, 5 × 103 cells mL−1 were detected in buffer in less than 30 min. Slight losses of sensitivity (1-5 × 10−4 cell mL−1) but not specificity occur in the presence of high levels of extraneous bacteria and in various food matrices (ground beef, turkey sausage, carcass wash, and apple juice). No significant difference was observed in the detection of E. coli O157:H7 in typical culture media (Luria Broth and Tryptic Soy Broth).  相似文献

Summary The novel application of CE using non-aqueous media has been studied for the separation of a range of acidic compound types. This enabled the first quantitative assay by CE employing non-aqueous media to be performed. Separation selectivity manipulation for closely related species was achieved through variation of organic solvent types and composition, ionic strength changes, alteration of pH* values and the addition of cyclodextrin additives soluble in organic solvents. This offers a greater range of possibilities during method development than use of aqueous buffer. The generation of low operating currents permitted rapid, highly efficient and selective separations to be achieved by applying high field strengths across short capillaries. Optimised rinsing and capillary regenerating procedures were devised which allowed highly repeatable separations to be achieved with migration time repeatability below 1% RSD. Use of internal standards also allowed 1% RSD values to be obtained for injection precision. Routine operating effects were assessed and it was observed that stacking effects remain important in non-aqueous CE. Also, optimal separations are obtained when the samples are diluted in the pure solvent used to prepare the electrolyte. The application range of non-aqueous CE was appreciably extended to include acidic drugs, dyes, surfactants and preservatives.  相似文献
