Calixarene derivatives 1a , 1b , and 1c containing pendant tert‐butoxycarbonyl (t‐BOC) groups were synthesized in 81, 93, and 83% yields, respectively, by the reaction of C‐methylcalix[4]resorcinarene (CRA), p‐methylcalix[6]arene (MCA), and ptert‐butylcalix[8]arene (BCA) with di‐tert‐butyl dicarbonate using triethylamine as a base in pyridine. Calixarene derivatives 2a , 2b , and 2c containing pendant trimethylsilyl ether (TMSE) groups were obtained in 58, 50, and 82% yields, respectively, by the reaction of CRA, MCA, and BCA with 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexamethyldisilazane using chlorotrimethylsilane as an accelerator in tetrahydrofuran. Calixarene derivatives 3a , 3b , and 3c containing pendant cyclohexenyl ether (CHE) groups were also prepared in 65, 78, and 84% yields, respectively, by the reaction of CRA, MCA, and BCA with 3‐bromocyclohexene using potassium hydroxide as a base as well as tetrabutylammonium bromide as a phase‐transfer catalyst in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrolidone. The photoinduced deprotection of calixarene derivatives 1a – c was examined with bis‐[4‐(diphenylsulfonio)phenyl]sulfide bis(hexafluorophosphate) as a photoacid generator on UV irradiation followed by heating in the film state, and it was found that the deprotection of the t‐BOC groups of 1a proceeded smoothly in high conversion. The deprotection rates of the t‐BOC groups of 1b and 1c were much lower than that of 1a under the same irradiation conditions. The photoinduced deprotection of calixarenes 2b – c containing tetramethylsilane groups as well as 3a – c containing CHE groups were also examined under similar reaction conditions in the film state, and it was found that the deprotection rates of calixarenes 2b – c and 3a – c were lower than those of the corresponding 1a – c calixarenes. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Sulfonium‐containing polymers prepared from dibenzothiophene and diphenyl sulfide were applied as both alkylating agents and latent initiators for the cationic polymerization of glycidyl phenyl ether. The alkylation of acetonitrile proceeded smoothly with poly(Sn‐octyl‐2‐vinyldibenzothiophenium tetrafluoroborate) ( 4 ; 64 mol % octyldibenzothiophenium tetrafluoroborate unit) to give N‐(n‐octyl)acetamide in an excellent yield on the basis of the starting octyldibenzothiophenium tetrafluoroborate unit in 4 . The cationic polymerization of glycidyl phenyl ether was also carried out in the presence of poly(S‐methyl‐2‐vinyldibenzothiophenium tetrafluoroborate) or poly(Sn‐octyl‐4‐vinyldiphenylsulfonium tetrafluoroborate) to confirm their moderate thermal latent activity. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A new AB2 monomer was synthesized for use in the preparation of a hyperbranched poly(aryl ether oxadiazole) with terminal phenol functionality. The AB2 monomer contains two phenolic groups and a single aryl fluoride group that is activated toward nucleophilic displacement by the attached oxadiazole ring. The nucleophilic substitution of the fluoride with the phenolate groups led to the formation of an ether linkage. Subsequently, a hyperbranched poly(aryl ether oxadiazole) having approximately a 44% degree of branching, as determined by a combination of model compound studies and 1H NMR, was obtained. The terminal phenolic groups underwent facile functionalization, furnishing hyperbranched polymers with a variety of functional chain ends. The nature of the chain‐end groups had a significant influence on the physical properties of the polymers, such as the glass‐transition temperature and their solubility. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Amphiphilic diblock copolymers were prepared by the living cationic polymerization of vinyl ethers in the presence of added bases, and their selective solvent‐induced physical gelation behavior was investigated. The block copolymerization of 2‐phenoxyethyl vinyl ether (PhOVE) and 2‐methoxyethyl vinyl ether (MOVE) was carried out in the presence of ethyl acetate with Et1.5AlCl1.5 in toluene at 0 °C. Despite the rate difference, diblock copolymers with a very narrow molecular weight distribution were obtained, quantitatively. By adding the selective solvent, water, to the acetone solution of the diblock copolymer, PhOVE200b‐MOVE400, physical gelation occurred suddenly and the system ceased to flow, maintaining transparency. Viscoelastic measurements and transmission electron microscopic observations were performed to examine the characteristic gelation behavior and structure of the obtained gels. Various gelation conditions and physical gelation by other amphiphilic block copolymers were also designed on the basis of the solubility of each block segment. Further, new forms of physical gelation, accompanied by the solubilization of immiscible organic compounds, were achieved using similar diblock copolymers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Two kinds of new aromatic poly(arylene ether)s containing sulfonic acid groups were synthesized. Polymer 1 composed of tetraphenylphenylene ether and perfluorobiphenylene units was sulfonated with chlorosulfonic acid. Sulfonation took place only at the para position of the pendant phenyl rings. The average degree of sulfonation per repeating unit (m) was controlled from 1 to 4. Sulfonated polymer 2 with m = 3 was soluble in methanol and dimethyl sulfoxide and swelled in water. Incorporating bis(3,5‐dimethylphenyl)sulfone moieties into the sulfonated polymer imparts less methanol affinity. Polymers 4 with 30–65 mol % tetrakis(sulfophenyl)phenylene ether units has high decomposition temperatures above 300 °C, hydrophilicity, and good hydrolytic stability. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
