Lithium–air batteries when operated in ambient air generally exhibit poor reversibility and cyclability, because of the Li passivation and Li2O2/LiOH/Li2CO3 accumulation in the air electrode. Herein, we present a Li–air battery supported by a polymer electrolyte containing 0.05 m LiI, in which the polymer electrolyte efficiently alleviates the Li passivation induced by attacking air. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that I−/I2 conversion in polymer electrolyte acts as a redox mediator that facilitates electrochemical decomposition of the discharge products during recharge process. As a result, the Li–air battery can be stably cycled 400 times in ambient air (relative humidity of 15 %), which is much better than previous reports. The achievement offers a hope to develop the Li–air battery that can be operated in ambient air.

The Pt‐catalyzed hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) for alkaline polymer electrolyte fuel cells (APEFCs) has been one of the focus subjects in current fuel‐cell research. The Pt catalyst is inferior for HOR in alkaline solutions, and alloying with Ru is an effective promotion strategy. APEFCs with Pt‐Ru anodes have provided a performance benchmark over 1 W cm?2 at 60 °C. The Pt anode is now found to be in fact as good as the Pt‐Ru anode for APEFCs operated at elevated conditions. At 80 °C with appropriate gas back‐pressure, the cell with a Pt anode exhibits a peak power density of about 1.9 W cm?2, which is very close to that with a Pt‐Ru anode. Even by decreasing the anode Pt loading to 0.1 mg cm?2, over 1.5 W cm?2 can still be achieved at 80 °C. This finding alters the previous understanding about the Pt catalyzed HOR in alkaline media and casts a new light on the development of practical and high‐power APFEC technology.

Well‐controlled nanostructures and a high fraction of Sn/Li2O interface are critical to enhance the coulombic efficiency and cyclic performance of SnO2‐based electrodes for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). Polydopamine (PDA)‐coated SnO2 nanocrystals, composed of hundreds of PDA‐coated “corn‐like” SnO2 nanoparticles (diameter ca. 5 nm) decorated along a “cob”, addressed the irreversibility issue of SnO2‐based electrodes. The PDA‐coated SnO2 were crafted by capitalizing on rationally designed bottlebrush‐like hydroxypropyl cellulose‐graft‐poly (acrylic acid) (HPC‐g ‐PAA) as a template and was coated with PDA to construct a passivating solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. In combination, the corn‐like nanostructure and the protective PDA coating contributed to a PDA‐coated SnO2 electrode with excellent rate capability, superior long‐term stability over 300 cycles, and high Sn→SnO2 reversibility.

The key issue holding back the application of solid polymeric electrolytes in high‐energy density lithium metal batteries is the contradictory requirements of high ion conductivity and mechanical stability. In this work, self‐healable solid polymeric electrolytes (SHSPEs) with rigid‐flexible backbones and high ion conductivity are synthesized by a facile condensation polymerization approach. The all‐solid Li metal full batteries based on the SHSPEs possess freely bending flexibility and stable cycling performance as a result of the more disciplined metal Li plating/stripping, which have great implications as long‐lifespan energy sources compatible with other wearable devices.
