Reactions of regioisomeric fluoroalkyl-containing β-aminovinyl ketones with hydrazines

Fluoroalkyl -alkyl--aminovinyl ketones react with hydrazine hydrate to give the respective razoles and with phenylhydrazine they form a mixture of pyrazoles and 5 hydroxy-²-pyrazolines. Alkyl(aryl) -fluoroalkyl--aminovinylketones do not react with the hydrazines mentioned above. With 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine, both types of fluoroalkyl-containing -aminovinyl ketones give only hydrazones of the corresponding methyl alkyl(aryl) ketones.     

Optimisation of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Systems for Complexation of Naproxen : Beta-Cyclodextrin

Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO₂)offers several attractive scenarios for thepharmaceutical processing as an alternativeto aqueous and organic solvents. In thiswork naproxen, a widely used non steroidalanti-inflammatory drug with analgesic andanti-inflammatory properties, was chosenas a model drug. Its complexation with cyclodextrinsimproves the rate and extent of dissolutionof the drug, increase its rate of absorption and mayreduce the unpleasant side-effects of the drug.The interest in using this supercritical technologyled us to develop an experimental unit for the useof supercritical CO₂ as a processing medium forthe complexation of naproxen with beta cyclodextrin (CD).     

COMPOSITION OF THE ESSENTIAL OIL OF Haplophyllum myrtifolium

The chemical composition of the essential oil ofHaplophyllum myrtifoliumBoiss., endemic to Turkey, was examined by GC/MS. Ninety-seven compounds were characterized with linalool (12.8%), -caryophyllene (10.3 %), and methyleugenol (5.9 %) as the main constituents.     

Methyl trifluoropyruvate in the Pictet-Spengler reaction

Condensation of methyl trifluoropyruvate with 2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)ethylamine, tryptamine, and (D, L)-tryptophan yielded 1-methoxycarbonyl-1-trifluoromethyl-6,7-dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline, 1-methoxycarbonyl-1-trifluoromethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole, and Z-1-methoxycarbonyl-1-trifluoromethyl-3-carboxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole, respectively. Solubility Study of Nimodipine Inclusion Complexation with α- and β-Cyclodextrin and some Substituted Cyclodextrins

The solubility of nimodipine was measured in aqueous solutions of the following cyclodextrins: -cyclodextrin (-CD), hydroxypropyl--CD (HP--CD), -cyclodextrin (-CD), random substituted methyl--CD (M--CD), three hydroxypropyl--CDs (HP--CD) with mutually different average degree of substitution, and hydroxypropyl--cyclodextrin (HP--CD). From the determined linear solubility diagrams the values of the binding constant K₁₁ of the inclusion complexes of nimodipine with the respective CDs were evaluated. The -CDs efficiently solubilized sparingly soluble nimodipine, the highest value of K₁₁ was found for M--CD (1680 M^-1), followed by -CD (550 M^-1) and HP--CDs, where the higher degree of substitution lowered K₁₁. Only slight solubilization of nimodipine was observed in the solutions of the -CDs and HP--CD.     

Effect of hydrophobic amino acids on the conformational change of decapeptides in micellar environments

A series of peptides containing various hydrophobic amino acids [methionine (Met), leucine (Leu), norleucine (Nle), phenylalanine (Phe), 2-aminooctanoic acid (Aoc), and 2-aminodecanoic acid (Ade)] were synthesized and their conformations were studied using circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy in different solvents such as water, methanol, and aqueous solution of ammonium tetradecanesulfonate. Peptides containing hydrophobic amino acids with linear side chains formed -sheets in water and methanol. Electrostatic interaction between the charged side chain (lysine) and a micelle consisting of an anionic surfactant, ammonium tetradecanesulfonate, is necessary for the formation of -helices in micellar environments. The conformational transition from -helix to -sheet structure required moderate hydrophobicity and linear side chains. This conformational transition depended on the surfactant concentration.     

Structure-Activity Relationship of Insecticidal Steroids. V. 3β-Benzoyloxystigmastan-6-ones

The toxicity of steroid benzoates 4-10 for Colorado beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say.) larvae was studied by a contact-intestinal method. The most active growth and development regulator for this insect is 3-benzoyloxy-5-hydroxy-⁷-6-ketosteroid 9a.     

Selective Oxidation of Betulin by Cr(VI) Reagents

Oxidation of betulin by pyridinium dichromate, pyridinium chlorochromate, and K₂Cr₂O₇ -H₂SO₄ in the presence of tetrabutylammonium bromide was studied. Products of regioselective C-3, C-28-, and exhaustive oxidation, 28-hydroxylup-20(29)-3-one, 3-hydroxy- and 3-oxolup-20(29)-en-28-al were obtained.     

The cellulose system in viscin from mistletoe berries

The cellulose system of the viscous fibrous cellulosic polysaccharide (viscan) in the viscin tissue of the European mistletoe, Viscum album L., was analyzed by chemical and physicochemical techniques including sugar analysis, optical and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray and electron diffraction together with solid state CP/MAS ¹³C-NMR spectroscopy. The results confirmed that in the elongated thin viscin cells, the cellulose microfibrils (having a diameter of around 3 nm) were tightly coiled with their axes perpendicular to the long axis of the cell. Upon stretching these cells became deformed by more than a hundred fold. In such a deformation, the cellulose microfibrils became unwound to be perfectly aligned along the stretching direction. Based on solid-state CP/MAS ¹³C-NMR spectroscopic analysis of the viscin tissue, it was found that its cellulose consisted of I and I polymorphs in the ratio 1:1.     

Stability of Ibuprofen in its Inclusion Complex with β-Cyclodextrin

The ibuprofen--cyclodextrin inclusion complex was prepared by theco-precipitation method. The identity of the obtained product was verified by X-ray and thermogravimetric techniques. The effect of -cyclodextrin on the stability of ibuprofen was analysed.
