We have computed electronic structures and total energies of circularly confined two-dimensional quantum dots and their lateral
dimers in zero and finite uniform external magnetic fields using different theoretical schemes: the spin-density-functional
theory (SDFT), the current-and-spin-density-functional theory (CSDFT), and the variational quantum Monte Carlo (VMC) method.
The SDFT and CSDFT calculations employ a recently-developed, symmetry-unrestricted real-space algorithm allowing solutions
which break the spin symmetry. Results obtained for a six-electron dot in the weak confinement limit and in zero magnetic
field as well as in a moderate confinement and in finite magnetic fields enable us to draw conclusions about the reliability
of the more approximative SDFT and CSDFT schemes in comparison with the VMC method. The same is true for results obtained
for the two-electron quantum dot dimer as a function of inter-dot distance. The structure and role of the symmetry-breaking
solutions appearing in the SDFT and CSDFT calculations for the above systems are discussed.

We present numerical investigations of the transmission properties of electrons in a normal quantum wire tangentially attached
to a superconductor ring threaded by magnetic flux. A point scatterer with a δ -function potential is placed at node to model
scattering effect. We find that the transmission characteristics of electrons in this structure strongly depend on the normal
or superconducting state of the ring. The transmission probability as a function of the energy of incident electrons, in the
case of a superconductor ring threaded by one quantum magnetic flux, emerges one deep dip, imposed upon the first broad bump
in spectrum. This intrinsic conductance dip originates from the superconductor state of the ring. When increasing the magnetic
flux from one quantum magnetic flux to two, the spectrum shifts toward higher energy region in the whole. This conductance
dip accordingly shifts and appears in the second bump. In the presence of a point-scatterer at the node, the spectrum is substantially
modified. Based on the condition of the formation of the standing wave functions in the ring and the broken of the time-reserve
symmetry of Schr?dinger equation after switching magnetic flux, the characteristics of transmission of electrons in this structure
can be well understood.

Microwave Activation of Processes in Mesopores: The Thiourea Electrooxidation at Mesoporous Platinum

In situ microwave activation is applied to the electrochemical oxidation of thiourea at low surface area (polished polycrystalline) and at high surface area (electrodeposited mesoporous platinum coated) platinum microelectrodes. The one electron oxidation of thiourea to formamidine disulfide is monitored as a function of the different activation parameters. In the absence of microwaves (ambient temperature, low mass transport) increasing the surface area (roughness) increases the thiourea oxidation response predominantly due to adsorption effects. In the presence of high microwave intensities, high mass transport and thermal effects further increase the oxidation current at mesoporous platinum. The most effective thickness of the mesoporous platinum film for the thiourea oxidation process is estimated as 3 μm independent of electrode diameter, temperature, or mass transport effects. 相似文献

This study analyzes the economics of transshipping biomass from truck to train in a North American setting. Transshipment
will only be economic when the cost per unit distance of a second transportation mode is less than the original mode. There
is an optimum number of transshipment terminals which is related to biomass yield. Transshipment incurs incremental fixed
costs, and hence there is a minimum shipping distance for rail transport above which lower costs/km offset the incremental
fixed costs. For transport by dedicated unit train with an optimum number of terminals, the minimum economic rail shipping
distance for straw is 170 km, and for boreal forest harvest residue wood chips is 145 km. The minimum economic shipping distance
for straw exceeds the biomass draw distance for economically sized centrally located power plants, and hence the prospects
for rail transport are limited to cases in which traffic congestion from truck transport would otherwise preclude project
development. Ideally, wood chip transport costs would be lowered by rail transshipment for an economically sized centrally
located power plant, but in a specific case in Alberta, Canada, the layout of existing rail lines precludes a centrally located
plant supplied by rail, whereas a more versatile road system enables it by truck. Hence for wood chips as well as straw the
economic incentive for rail transport to centrally located processing plants is limited. Rail transshipment may still be preferred
in cases in which road congestion precludes truck delivery, for example as result of community objections. 相似文献

Oxide catalysts are frequently used to convert toxic species to environmentally benign molecules, and to prevent the formation of toxic species in the first place. In this paper, growth and characterization of model oxide systems employed in both approaches is discussed. An example of the former approach is the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO emitted from power plants by NH3, which employs tungsten and vanadium oxides supported on the anatase polymorph of TiO2. To model SCR catalysts, epitaxial titanium, vanadium and tungsten oxide films were grown using molecular beam epitaxy and magnetron sputtering. Two different anatase orientations were grown on LaAlO3 substrates and their interactions with vanadia were characterized. On LaAlO3 (0 0 1), anatase exposed a (4 × 1) reconstructed (0 0 1) surface. Vanadia lifted the reconstruction and at 1 ML a (1 × 1) surface with mostly V5+ was observed. Continued V2O5 growth led to loss of order, but at high temperatures epitaxial VO2 could be grown; vanadia behaved similarly on anatase films on LaAlO3 (1 1 0). Results suggested that the monolayer is pseudomorphic with O adsorption oxidizing the surface V to 5+, since the anatase structure cannot accommodate more bulk oxygen, only a monolayer can be pseudomorphic and have only V5+. Thus the vanadia monolayer has unique structural and chemical properties that can help explain why vanadia monolayers on TiO2 are much more active than bulk V2O5. For WO3, a series of added row reconstructions were observed as the epitaxial films were reduced. The effect of these structures on surface chemistry was characterized by studying 1-propanol adsorption. The results indicated that the structure of the WO3 surface did not alter its catalytic function but had a strong effect on reaction kinetics. As an example of a system where catalysts prevent the formation of toxic species, the reactivity of oxidized Pd surfaces used in CH4 catalytic combustion were studied. An ordered PdO-like monolayer was found to be less reactive towards CO than adsorbed O on Pd. On the other hand, the PdO layer favored a lower activation energy C3H6 oxidation pathway. The results indicated that Pd oxidation reduces the sticking coefficient of reactive species but once molecules adsorb, the oxide surface can reduce the activation energy for subsequent reaction. 相似文献

Domain wall motion in Mn–Zn and Ni–Zn ferrites with applied magnetic fields is investigated by in situ observations with Lorentz microscopy and electron holography. It is found that both Mn–Zn and Ni–Zn ferrites have a mean grain size of approximately 10 μm and several pores with sizes ranging from 0.2 to 1.1 μm. In situ observations by Lorentz microscopy with an applied magnetic field reveals that in Mn–Zn ferrite, the domain walls move easily across the grain boundary, while in Ni–Zn ferrite, the domain walls move along the grain boundary but are pinned at the grain boundary and pores. From in situ observations of Ni–Zn ferrite by electron holography, it is clarified that domain wall pinning at the grain boundary retards a sensitive increase in magnetic flux parallel to the applied field direction, which is considered to result in high hysteresis loss. 相似文献

Electron beam processing of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films is found to promote significant changes in the melting heat, intrinsic viscosity and polymer film-liquid (water, isooctane and toluene) boundary surface tension. These properties are featured with several maximums depending on the absorbed dose and correlating with the modification of PET surface functionality. Studies using adsorption of acid-base indicators and IR-spectroscopy revealed that the increase of PET surface hydrophilicity is determined by the oxidation of methylene and methyne groups. Electron beam treatment of PET films on the surface of N-vinylpyrrolidone aqueous solution provided graft copolymerization with this comonomer at optimum process parameters (energy 700 keV, current 1 mA, absorbed dose 50 kGy). 相似文献
