In this paper, a method for identifying interfering EPR signals in fossil tooth enamel is presented. This method consists of optimizing EPR parameters to enhance spectral resolution of the fossil signals followed by a g-factor and intensity normalized subtraction of a high-dosed, modern tooth enamel sample spectrum. By scanning the modern tooth enamel sample with the same parameters as the fossil sample, the difference spectrum of the fossil and modern irradiated tooth enamel samples can resolve numerous hyperfine and other interfering signals. This method was successfully applied to a fossil sample studied elsewhere (Grün, R., 1998a. Ancient TL 16, 51–55; Grün, R., Clapp, R., 1996. Ancient TL 14, 1–5; Martin Jonas, 1997. Ph.D. Thesis, Cambridge University; Jonas, M., Grün, R., 1997. Radiat. Meas. 27, 49–58; Vanhaelewyn et al., 2000. Appl. Radiat. Isot. 52, 1317–1326). This sample has shown discrepancies in dose estimations obtained from the power absorption curve versus those obtained from the first derivative spectra (Grün, R., 1998b. Radiat. Meas. 29, 177–193). The reason for this, and other discrepancies, are accounted for by the signals resolved using the method presented here.  相似文献

The uncertainties in 60Co gamma-ray dosimetry at JAERI have been estimated by reviewing irradiation and calibration procedures. The uncertainty in dose delivered by the JAERI calibration system has been estimated to be 2.2% (2σ) and the uncertainty in dose measurement using JAERI alanine/ESR transfer dosimeters has been estimated to be 3.4% (2σ). A two-way dose intercomparison study between NPL and JAERI employing alanine-PS, alanine-paraffin, and dichromate dosimeters as transfer dosimeters was performed to confirm the estimated uncertainty over the dose range 1–50 kGy. Dose intercomparison results using both alanine and dichromate dosimeters show agreement within about 2%, which gives confidence in the estimated uncertainty in 60Co gamma-ray dosimetry at JAERI.  相似文献

The shape of composite peak 5 in the glow curve of LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100), specifically, the ratio of the intensity of peak 5a to peak 5, is employed to separately estimate the gamma and alpha particle components in a mixed radiation field. A blind test demonstrates the reasonable accuracy of the technique which yields results between 3.8% and 30%.  相似文献

The thermoluminescence properties of white (WJ) and green (GJ) mineral jadeite have been investigated with a view to be of use in high dose dosimetry. WJ presented glow curve with 110, 190 and 235 °C peaks. All these peaks grow with radiation dose. The glow curve of GJ the green variety has TL peaks at 140, 210, 250 and 330 °C. We also observed that there is a difference between the TL glow curves for both samples, irradiated with gamma and electron. As expected the green jadeite can be used for measurement of dose as high as 50 kGy.  相似文献

New commercial dosimetry systems need careful characterization and can benefit from the comparison with similar, in-house developed solutions. A comparison between such two dosimetry systems, both based on fibre-coupled organic plastic scintillator detectors, is presented. One system is the Exradin W1, fully commercialized by Standard Imaging, while the other system is the non-commercial ME40 system, developed by DTU Nutech with the aim of fundamental dosimetric research. Both systems employ plastic scintillator detectors that can be considered similar in design, calibrated using the same method, but differing primarily in the signal detection hardware. The two systems were compared with respect to essential dosimetric properties, with the purpose of testing their performance under conditions less well discussed in the literature. A Farmer ionization chamber was used as the primary reference of the comparison. The study demonstrated that the Cerenkov light ratio calibration coefficient of both systems was not constant, but changed systematically with photon beam quality to a maximum difference of 1.1%. Calibration with respect to stem effect correction should therefore be performed for every investigated beam quality when using plastic scintillator detectors. Both systems were found to be dose rate independent, even for the highest instantaneous dose rate evaluated (1.5 mGy per pulse). Low-dose measurements revealed large uncertainties for both systems, although the ME40 system handled short beam deliveries under reference conditions with accuracy and precision within 0.4%. Changes in response due to field size dependence were investigated and found to be as large as 3.3% for the W1 and 5.4% for the ME40, biasing output factor measurements in large fields. Great caution is therefore advised if using either system for measurements in large fields or under circumstances where the fibre irradiation geometry is unfavourable. Measurements of reference dose to water yielded differences up to 1.5% when compared with the Farmer ionization chamber for all investigated beam qualities.  相似文献

The dosimetric response characterization and beam data acquisition performance of a miniature Float Zone (FZ) silicon diode for photon beams was investigated using Novalis TX linear accelerator (Varian Medical Systems®). In all measurements the unbiased diode operated in a short-circuit mode, connected to the input of a Keithley 6517B electrometer using a water phantom. For photon beams of the 6 and 15 MV the results presented good repeatability (coefficient of variation ≤1.6%), measured through switching on/off the photon beams. Moreover, the diode showed a quite linear response, given by the charge versus absorbed dose, with charge sensitivities higher than 6.9 nC/Gy. The output factor, percentage depth dose profile (PDD) and transversal dose profile (TDP) were also measured in a water phantom. For small field sizes, the output factor values using the FZ diode were compared with measurements obtained with a SFD (Stereotactic Field Diode) commercial diode and the differences were 5.4%, 2.5% and 1.3% for the field sizes of 1 × 1, 2 × 2 and 3 × 3 cm². For larger field sizes (≥4 × 4 cm²), the maximum difference found was 0.7% in comparison with values obtained with a CC13 ionization chamber. Thus, the result demonstrates that the unshielded FZ diode has the potential to be used for measuring of, as it performed acceptably well for both small and large field sizes. The TDP experimental results obtained with the FZ diode for field sizes of: 1 × 1 cm2, 2 × 2 cm2 and 4 × 4 cm2 are in agreement with experimental results acquired with several commercial detectors. Through the TDP study, the comparison of the field penumbra size confirmed the excellent spatial resolution of the miniature diode. However, the PDD study, requires further investigation.  相似文献

One way of studying the risk to human health of low-level radiation exposure is to make biological experiments on living cell cultures.

Two 210Po -particle emitting devices, with 0.5 and 100 MBq activity, were designed and constructed to perform such experiments irradiating monolayers of cells. Estimates of dose rate at the cell surface were obtained from measurements by a PIPS -particle spectrometer and from calculations by the SRIM 2000, Monte Carlo charged particle transport code. Particle fluence area distributions were measured by solid state nuclear track detectors. The design and dosimetric characterisation of the devices are discussed.  相似文献

The challenging problem of estimating the dose delivered to heterogeneous products by radiation modalities of limited penetration can be readily handled by using technologies developed for, and widely used in, radiation therapy applications. In particular, combining CT scanning with radiation treatment planning programs can simulate radiation processing with either photons or electrons, and can provide detailed, high resolution and accurate dose maps for any arbitrary product and package configuration. Such dose maps are an essential part of process validation. Comparison of the simulated dose distributions with measured dose maps verifies the soundness of this approach. The present communication presents results obtained with the simulation technique for a variety of common food items which are likely candidates for radiation processing.  相似文献

Irradiated A-type carbonated apatites with carbonate content ranging from 1.45% to 4.84% are studied by using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The EPR spectra are mainly constituted of lines associated to axial CO2 species (g=2.0028 and g=1.9973) and orthorhombic CO3 species (g1=2.0170, g2=2.0090 and g3=2.0041). The production of CO2 species on gamma irradiation depends on the carbonate concentration and the hydroxyapatite stoichiometry. The lowest dose detection limit was achieved with stoichiometric samples and carbonate concentration of 3.7%.  相似文献

Crystalline inclusions contained in ceramics act as thermoluminescent dosimeters, the irradiation source being the natural radiation environment. Because of this, various ceramic materials (pottery, bricks, cooked clays, bronze clay-cores) have been dated by thermoluminescence (TL). A short review of the main possibilities of TL dating is given, with some examples that enlighten the advantages and limits of this method in the field of archaeological dating, compared to TL dating of buildings. The assessment of the chronology of Valdivia culture (Ecuador), based on a three-year project of TL dating, is presented and discussed. The overall uncertainty at around 4–5% can be considered the best limit presently available. The uncertainty distribution found among 700 archaeological TL datings and for about 500 building TL datings is also presented.  相似文献
