Wirelessly powered dielectrophoresis (DEP) of metal oxide particles was performed using a spark-gap Tesla coil (TC). The main contribution of this work is the simplification of the conventional DEP setup that requires attaching wires directly to the electrodes. Wireless power from the TC generates a high output frequency and voltage, which corresponds to that used for the DEP. Therefore, a spark-gap TC was built and utilized to conduct the DEP process. Metal oxides (ZnO and Fe2O3) were used as targets for the assembly. The results showed that the wirelessly powered DEP technique via a TC was successful in assembling the metal oxide particles. Positive and negative DEP phenomena were observed. Positive DEP occurred during ZnO assembly, making particles chain grow 0.92 mm toward the sparks within 60 s. Negative DEP was observed during Fe2O3 assembly, where the repulsion of particles formed a void around the sparks with a 1.45 mm radius. The mechanism of this wireless DEP system is discussed.  相似文献

Insulator-based dielectrophoretic (iDEP) microdevices have been limited to work with Newtonian fluids. We report an experimental study of the fluid rheological effects on iDEP focusing and trapping of polystyrene particles in polyethylene oxide, xanthan gum, and polyacrylamide solutions through a constricted microchannel. Particle focusing and trapping in the mildly viscoelastic polyethylene oxide solution are slightly weaker than in the Newtonian buffer. They are, however, significantly improved in the strongly viscoelastic and shear thinning polyacrylamide solution. These observed particle focusing behaviors exhibit a similar trend with respect to electric field, consistent with a revised theoretical analysis for iDEP focusing in non-Newtonian fluids. No apparent focusing of particles is achieved in the xanthan gum solution, though the iDEP trapping can take place under a much larger electric field than the other fluids. This is attributed to the strong shear thinning-induced influences on both the electroosmotic flow and electrokinetic/dielectrophoretic motions.  相似文献

Dielectrophoresis is an electrokinetic phenomenon that utilizes an asymmetric electric field to separate analytes based on differences in their polarizabilities relative to that of the suspending medium. One dielectrophoretic device architecture that offers interesting possibilities for particle transport without the use of external flow is the ratchet geometry. This paper describes the fabrication and evaluation of a novel dielectrophoretic ratchet device using a series of fine particles as test probes. The asymmetrical electric field required to selectively transport target analytes was produced using electroformed electrodes which offer the possibility of reducing convective heating and which can be used to construct a device in which all particles located within the fluidic channel are exposed to the applied field. Initial tests of this device were conducted using magnetite and polystyrene fine particles to demonstrate selective particle collection and a separation based on differences in the electrical properties of the analytes employed.  相似文献

Studies of particle electrophoresis have so far been limited to primarily theoretical or numerical analyses in straight microchannels. Very little work has been done on particle electrophoretic motions in real microchannels that may have one or multiple turns for reducing the devices size or achieving other functions. This article presents an experimental and numerical study of particle electrophoresis in curved microchannels. Polystyrene microparticles are found to migrate across streamlines and flow out of a spiral microchannel in a focused stream near the outer wall. This transverse focusing effect arises from the dielectrophoretic particle motion induced by the nonuniform electric field intrinsic to curved channels. The experimental observations agree quantitatively with the numerical predictions.  相似文献

Monocyte heterogeneity and its prevalence are revealed as indicator of several human diseases ranking from cardiovascular diseases to rheumatoid arthritis, chronic kidney diseases, autoimmune multiple sclerosis, and stroke injuries. When monocytes and macrophages are characterized and isolated with preserved genetic, phenotypic and functional properties, they can be used as label‐free biomarkers for precise diagnostics and treatment of various diseases. Here, the dielectrophoretic responses of the monocytes and macrophages were examined. We present 3D carbon‐electrode dielectrophoresis (carbon‐DEP) as a separation tool for U937 monocytes and U937 monocyte‐differentiated macrophages. The carbon‐electrodes advanced the usability and throughput of DEP separation, presented wider electrochemical stability. Using the 3D carbon‐DEP chip, we first identified the selective positive and negative DEP responses and specific crossover frequencies of monocytes and macrophages as their signatures for separation. The crossover frequency of monocytes and macrophages was 17 and 30 kHz, respectively. Next, we separated monocyte and macrophage subpopulations using their specific dielectrophoretic responses. Afterward, we used a fluorescence‐activated cell sorter to confirm our results. Finally, we enriched 70% of monocyte cells from the mixed cell population, in other words, concentration of monocyte cells to macrophage cells was five times increased, using the 30‐kHz, 10‐Vpp electric field and 1 μL/min flow rate.  相似文献

Insulator‐based dielectrophoresis (iDEP), also known as electrodeless DEP, has become a well‐known dielectrophoretic technique, no longer viewed as a new methodology. Significant advances on iDEP have been reported during the last 15 years. This review article aims to summarize some of the most important findings on iDEP organized by the type of dielectrophoretic mode: streaming and trapping iDEP. The former is primarily used for particle sorting, while the latter has great capability for particle enrichment. The characteristics of a wide array of devices are discussed for each type of dielectrophoretic mode in order to present an overview of the distinct designs and applications developed with iDEP. A short section on Joule heating effects and electrothermal flow is also included to highlight some of the challenges in the utilization of iDEP systems. The significant progress on iDEP illustrates its potential for a large number of applications, ranging from bioanalysis to clinical and biomedical assessments. The present article discusses the work on iDEP by numerous research groups around the world, with the aim of proving the reader with an overview of the state‐of‐the‐art in iDEP microfluidic systems.  相似文献

This paper presents the development and experimental analysis of a curved microelectrode platform for the DEP deformation of breast cancer cells (MDA‐MB‐231). The platform is composed of arrays of curved DEP microelectrodes which are patterned onto a glass slide and samples containing MDA‐MB‐231 cells are pipetted onto the platform's surface. Finite element method is utilised to characterise the electric field gradient and DEP field. The performance of the system is assessed with MDA‐MB‐231 cells in a low conductivity 1% DMEM suspending medium. We applied sinusoidal wave AC potential at peak to peak voltages of 2, 5, and 10 Vpp at both 10 kHz and 50 MHz. We observed cell blebbing and cell shrinkage and analyzed the percentage of shrinkage of the cells. The experiments demonstrated higher percentage of cell shrinkage when cells are exposed to higher frequency and peak to peak voltage electric field.  相似文献

We present a novel technique for continuous label‐free separation of particles based on their dielectrophoretic crossover frequencies. Our technique relies on our unique microfluidic geometry which performs hydrodynamic focusing, generates a stagnation flow with two outlets, and simultaneously produces an isomotive dielectrophoretic field via wall‐situated electrodes. To perform particle separation, we hydrodynamically focus particles onto stagnation streamlines and use isomotive dielectrophoretic force to nudge the particles off these streamlines and direct them into appropriate outlets. Focusing particles onto stagnation streamlines obviates the need for large forces to be applied to the particles and therefore increases system throughput. The use of isomotive (spatially uniform) dielectrophoretic force increases system reliability. To guide designers, we develop and describe a simple scaling model for the particle separation dynamics of our technique. The model predicts the range of particle sizes that can be separated as well as the processing rate that can be achieved as a function of system design parameters: channel size, flow rate, and applied potential. Finally, as a proof‐of‐principle, we use this technique to separate polystyrene bead and cell mixtures of the same diameters as well as mixtures of both particles with varying diameters.  相似文献

The assembly of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) across planner electrodes using dielectrophoresis (DEP) is one of the standard methods used to fabricate CNT-based devices such as sensors. The medium drag velocity caused by electrokinetic phenomena such as electrothermal and electroosmotic might drive CNTs away from the deposition area. This problem becomes critical at large-scale electrode structures due to the high attenuation of the DEP force. Herein, we simulated and experimentally validated a novel DEP setup that uses a top glass cover to minimize the medium drag velocity. The simulation results showed that the drag velocity can be reduced by 2–3 orders of magnitude compared with the basic DEP setup. The simulation also showed that the optimum channel height to result in a significant drag velocity reduction was between 100 μm and 240 μm. We experimentally report, for the first time, the assembly and alignment of CNT bridges across indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes with spacing up to 125 μm. We also derived an equation to optimize the CNT's concentration in suspensions based on the electrode gap width and channel height. The deposition of long CNTs across ITO electrodes has potential use in transparent electronics and microfluidic systems.  相似文献

Manipulation of particles using dielectrophoresis   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A numerical scheme based on the distributed Lagrange multiplier method (DLM) is used to study the motion of particles of electrorheological suspensions subjected to non-uniform electric fields. At small Reynolds number, the time taken by the particles to collect at the minimums or maximums of the electric field is primarily determined by a parameter defined to be the ratio of the dielectrophoretic and viscous forces. Simulations show that in non-uniform electric fields the collection time is also influenced by a parameter defined by the ratio of the electrostatic particle–particle interaction and dielectrophoretic forces. The collection time decreases as this parameter decreases because when this parameter is less than one, particles move to the regions of high or low electric field regions individually. However, when this parameter is greater than one, particles regroup into chains which then move toward the electric field maximums or minimums without breaking. It is also shown that when the real part of the Clausius–Mosotti factor (β) is negative the positions of the local minimums of the electric field, and thus also the locations where particles collect, can be modified by changing the electric potential boundary conditions.  相似文献
