The optimal cell gap determination of a liquid crystal wavefront corrector from a single photoelectric measurement

It has been a crucial technique to improve the dynamic response characteristics of a liquid crystal wavefront corrector (LCWFC) with optimal cell gap since the LCWFC needs at least 2π (or π) phase modulation in adaptive optics systems (AOSs). We have given a complete process for obtaining the optimal cell gap accurately from a single photoelectric measurement, which can be conducted with a liquid crystal (LC) cell of any known thickness. This method has been analysed theoretically and confirmed experimentally by using a wedge-shaped cell; the experimental results match very well with the theoretical analysis. The response time of an optimal gap cell can be a novel evaluation method of response performance of LC materials.

Effects of different alkali metal ions on the cationization of poly(ethylene glycol)s in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry: a new selectivity parameter

The cationization of poly(ethylene glycol)s, PEG 4000 and PEG 6000, under matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization conditions was studied by using different concentration ratios of the sodium ion, as the reference ion, and another alkali metal ion (Li(+), K(+), Rb(+), Cs(+)). A linear correlation was found between the intensity ratio of the sodiated PEGs and PEGs cationized with alkali metal ions versus the initial concentration ratio of sodium and alkali metal ions. The slopes of these straight lines are proposed as a novel selectivity ratio for the ionization process. The intensity distribution of the cationized PEGs was also investigated. It was found that the cationized oligomers follow Poisson statistics. The M(n) and M(w) values were also evaluated. An explanation for the observed effects is given.     

A synthetic approach to bicyclo[6.2.1]undecane ring systems

A synthesis of a functionalized bicyclo[6.2.1]undecane, N-(7-hydroxymethyl-bicyclo[6.2.1]undeca-3,5,9-trien-2-yl)-4-methyl-benzenesulfonamide, is described. Starting with a [6+4] cycloaddition between cyclopentadiene and cycloheptatrienone, the final product was prepared in five steps with an overall 37% yield. The remarkable resistance to hydrolysis of an intermediate lactam was overcome by tosylating the amide and reducing with LiAlH₄.     

Addition of secondary phosphines to N-vinylpyrroles

Secondary phosphines 1-3 react readily with N-vinylpyrroles 4 and 5 under radical initiation to give regiospecifically anti-Markovnikov adducts, diorganyl-2-(1-pyrrolyl)ethylphosphines 6a-d, highly reactive building blocks for organic synthesis, in 88-91% yields.     

Catalyzed double Michael addition of anilines to vinyl sulfone

Substituted anilines and vinyl sulfone undergo a facile double Michael addition to form substituted phenylthiomorpholine dioxide, catalyzed with AlCl₃ or H₃PO₄. Scope and conditions were explored.     

Bismuth triflate catalyzed conjugate addition of indoles to α,β-enones

Reaction of indoles with electron deficient olefins under the influence of bismuth triflate has been studied at ambient temperature and affords the corresponding 3-alkylated indoles in excellent yields.     

Regioselective photoaddition of alcohols to 1,2,3-butatriene derivatives via photoinduced electron transfer

Photochemical polar addition of alcohols to 1,1-diaryl-1,2,3-butatriene derivatives in the presence of a catalytic amount of 9,10-dicyanoanthracene regioselectively afforded 1,1-diaryl-4-alkoxy-1,2-butadienes as addition products in good yields via photoinduced electron transfer.     

Regioselective 1,4-trifluoromethylation of α,β-enones using ‘protect-in-situ’ methodology

In a convenient and efficient procedure, the nucleophilic 1,4-trifluoromethylation of several α,β-enones using (trifluoromethyl)trimethylsilane was achieved. The high regioselectivity of the reaction has been reached by blocking the carbonyl moiety of the electrophile with a bulky aluminum-centered Lewis acid.
