Mapping properties of wave and scattering operators for two-body Schrödinger operators

The modified wave and scattering operators are shown to be bounded between weighted L ²-spaces for two-body Schrödinger operators with long range potentials.

Microlocal study of topological Radon transforms and real projective duality

Various topological properties of projective duality between real projective varieties and their duals are obtained by making use of the microlocal theory of (subanalytically) constructible sheaves developed by Kashiwara [M. Kashiwara, Index theorem for constructible sheaves, Astérisque 130 (1985) 193-209] and Kashiwara-Schapira [M. Kashiwara, P. Schapira, Sheaves on Manifolds, Grundlehren Math. Wiss., vol. 292, Springer, Berlin-Heidelberg-New York, 1990]. In particular, we prove in the real setting some results similar to the ones proved by Ernström in the complex case [L. Ernström, Topological Radon transforms and the local Euler obstruction, Duke Math. J. 76 (1994) 1-21]. For this purpose, we describe the characteristic cycles of topological Radon transforms of constructible functions in terms of curvatures of strata in real projective spaces.     

Proof of semialgebraic covering mapping cylinder conjecture with semialgebraic covering homotopy theorem

In this paper we prove the semialgebraic version of Palais' covering homotopy theorem, and use this to prove Bredon's covering mapping cylinder conjecture positively in the semialgebraic category. Bredon's conjecture was originally stated in the topological category, and a topological version of our semialgebraic proof of the conjecture answers the original topological conjecture for topological G-spaces over “simplicial” mapping cylinders.     

Asymptotic robustness of standard errors in multilevel structural equation models

Data in social and behavioral sciences are often hierarchically organized. Multilevel statistical methodology was developed to analyze such data. Most of the procedures for analyzing multilevel data are derived from maximum likelihood based on the normal distribution assumption. Standard errors for parameter estimates in these procedures are obtained from the corresponding information matrix. Because practical data typically contain heterogeneous marginal skewnesses and kurtoses, this paper studies how nonnormally distributed data affect the standard errors of parameter estimates in a two-level structural equation model. Specifically, we study how skewness and kurtosis in one level affect standard errors of parameter estimates within its level and outside its level. We also show that, parallel to asymptotic robustness theory in conventional factor analysis, conditions exist for asymptotic robustness of standard errors in a multilevel factor analysis model.     

Large-time behavior of perturbed diffusion markov processes with applications to the second eigenvalue problem for fokker-planck operators and simulated annealing

We study the large-time behavior and rate of convergence to the invariant measures of the processes dX (t)=b(X) (t)) dt + (X (t)) dB(t). A crucial constant appears naturally in our study. Heuristically, when the time is of the order exp( – )/² , the transition density has a good lower bound and when the process has run for about exp( – )/², it is very close to the invariant measure. Heat “polynomials” for a singular differential operator on (0, ∞)

We generalize the theory of the heat polynomials introduced by P. V. Rosenbloom and D. V. Widder for a more general class of singular differential operator on (0, ). The heat polynomials associated with the Bessel operator and studied by D. T. Haimo appear as a particular case in this paper. In the special cases of second derivative and Bessel operators the heat polynomials are in fact polynomials inx andt, however, this property does not hold in general.Communicated by Tom. H. Zinc porphyrin sensitized redox processes in microemulsions

Photoinduced electron transfer from Zn tetraphenylporphyrin to acceptors solubilized either in the lipid interior or aqueous bulk of anionic oil-in-water microemulsions has been investigated by nanosecond laser photolysis. While intimate cosolubilization appears to decrease the efficiency of electron transfer in the former, enhanced charge separation of the redox products has been observed in the latter.     

Engineering cytochrome P-450s

Cytochrome P-450 isozymes represent a critical component of nature’s spectrum of detoxification catalysts that could be exploited for bioremediation. The ethanol-inducible human cytochrome P-450 2E1 serves as a model eukaryotic P-450 that complements the bacterial P-450 cam in dehalogenation and detoxification of environmental pollutants. We explored the construction of novel chimeric P-450s using cytochrome P-450 camC and 2E1 genes. For construction of chimera 1 (478 amino acids, 55.14 kDa), 145 amino acids from the N-terminus of P-450 2E1 protein (493 amino acids, 56.84 kDa) were replaced with 130 amino acids from the N-terminus of P-450 camC protein (415 amino acids, 46.66 kDa). In chimera 2 (525 amino acids, 60.24 kDa) the strategy involves replacement of 28 amino acids in the C-terminus of chimera 1 with 75 amino acids from the C-terminus of P-450 camC gene. Homology models of both the chimeric proteins were developed using SWISS-MODEL based on the known crystal structure of cytochrome P-450 camC, BM-3, 1DT6A, and 2C17A. The models indicated that the proposed heme-binding site was intact, which is inevitable for catalytic activity of cytochrome P-450s. The expression of chimera 1 and 2 genes in Escherichia coli DH5α was evident from light-pink cell pellets, protein band in sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and diagnostic carbon monoxide-difference spectra. Our studies show that strategies can be developed to exploit the natural diversity of the P-450 superfamily to generate chimeric biocatalysts that would provide new templates amenable to directed evolution.
