Strictly heterodinuclear compounds containing U and Cu or Ni ions

Treatment of [M(H₂Lⁱ)] with UCl₄ in pyridine led to the formation of the dinuclear complexes [MLⁱ(py)UCl₂(py)₂] and/or [Hpy][MLⁱ(py)UCl₃] [Lⁱ = N,N′-bis(3-hydroxysalicylidene)-R, R = 1,2-phenylenediamine (i = 1), R = trans-1,2-cyclohexanediamine (i = 2), R = 2-amino-benzylamine (i = 3), R = 1,3-propanediamine (i = 4), R = 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine (i = 5); M = Cu or Ni]. The crystal structures show that the 3d and 5f ions occupy, respectively, the N₂O₂ and O₄ cavities of the Schiff base ligand, the U⁴⁺ ion adopting a dodecahedral or pentagonal bipyramidal configuration in the neutral and anionic complexes, respectively.     

Potentiometric and antimicrobial studies on the asymmetric Schiff bases and their binuclear Ni(II) and Fe(III) complexes; synthesis and characterization of the complexes

The protonation constants of two nitro-Schiff bases SB¹, SB² and three asymmetric tetradentate diimines H₂L¹, H₂L² and H₂L³ and the stability constants of their ML type binuclear Ni(II) and Fe(III) complexes have been determined potentiometrically. The asymmetric diimines are (2OH) RCHNC₆H₄CHNR′ (2OH) type compounds [where R = R′ = phenyl for H₂L¹; R = naphthyl, R′ = phenyl for H₂L² and R = R′ = naphthyl for H₂L³]. The effect of tautomeric forms on the acid-base properties of the diimines has been investigated and discussed. In addition, dimeric and binuclear Ni(II) and Fe(III) complexes of the diimines have been synthesized and characterized by physical and spectroscopic techniques. Also, in vitro antimicrobial activities of the diimines and the complexes have been evaluated against three bacteria: Micrococcus luteus (NRLL B-4375), Bacillus cereus (RSKK 863), Escherichia coli (ATCC 11230) and the fungus: Candida albicans (ATCC 10239).     

Studies on synthesis and kinetics of thermodecomposition of the nickel(Ⅱ) compounds with Schiff base derived from amino acids

Monoaqua salicylaldehyde-o-aminobenzoic acid Ni(Ⅱ) monohydrate (cp1) and monoaqua o-vanillin-o-aminobenzoic acid Ni(Ⅱ) monohydrate (cp2) were synthesized. The composition and structures of these two compounds were analyzed. Their thermal stability and non-isothermal kinetics were also investigated by use of TG and DTG curves. The possible reaction mechanisms in their first steps of thermal decomposition reactions were deduced by means of integral and differential methods. Thermodecomposition kinetic equations of the compounds are as follows:Cp1: da/At = A . exp(-E/RT) . 3/2(1 - a)4/3 . [1/(1 - a)1/3 -1]-1 Cp2 : da/At = A . exp(-E/RT) . (1 - a)     

Catalytic, asymmetric aza-Baylis-Hillman reaction of N-sulfonated imines with activated olefins by quinidine-derived chiral amines

The chiral nitrogen Lewis base, tricyclic cinchona alkaloid derivative TQO, is an effective promoter in the catalytic, asymmetric aza‐Baylis–Hillman reaction of N‐sulfonated imines Ar? CH?NR′ 1 (R′ = Ts, Ms, Ns, SES) with various activated olefins such as methyl vinyl ketone (MVK), ethyl vinyl ketone (EVK), acrolein, methyl acrylate, phenyl acrylate, or α‐naphthyl acrylate to give the corresponding adducts in moderate to good yields with good to high ee (up to 99 %) at ?30 °C or 45 °C in various solvents, including DMF/MeCN (1:1, v/v). The first such reaction of 1 with the simplest Michael acceptor MVK and methyl acrylate has been achieved with excellent enantioselectivity. The adducts derived from MVK and EVK had the opposite absolute configuration to those from acrolein, methyl acrylate, phenyl acrylate, and α‐naphthyl acrylate. A plausible mechanism has been proposed on the basis of previous reports and the authors’ investigations. An effective bifunctional chiral nitrogen Lewis base–Brønsted acid system has been revealed in this type of aza‐Baylis–Hillman reaction.     

A novel ion selective membrane potentiometric sensor for direct determination of Fe(III) in the presence of Fe(II)

A new PVC membrane potentiometric sensor that is highly selective to Fe(III) ions was prepared by using 2-[(2-hydroxy-1-propenyl-buta-1,3-dienylimino)-methyl]-4-p-tolylazo-phenol [HPDTP] as a suitable carrier. The electrode exhibits a linear response for iron(III) ions over a wide concentration range (3.5 × 10⁻⁶ to 4.0 × 10⁻²) with a super Nernstian slope of 28.5 (±0.5) per decade. The electrode can be used in the pH range from 4.5 to 6.5. The proposed sensor shows fairly a good discriminating ability towards Fe³⁺ ion in comparison to some hard and soft metals such as Fe²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺, Al³⁺ and Ca²⁺. It has a response time of <15 s and can be used for at least 2 months without any measurable divergence in response characteristics. The electrode was used in the direct determination of Fe³⁺ in aqueous samples and as an indicator electrode in potentiometric titration of Fe(III) ions.     

Copper(II) Complexes of ω‐Hydroxy‐Functionalized N‐Salicylidenehydrazides show pH‐Controlled Switching between Dicationic Dimers and Neutral One‐Dimensional Coordination Polymers

New copper(II) complexes of the hydrazone ligands H₂salhyhb, H₂salhyhp, and H₂salhyhh, derived from salicylaldehyde and ω‐hydroxy carbonic acid hydrazides, have been synthesized and physically characterized. Two fundamental structures were found in solid state depending on the pH‐value of the reaction solution. Acidic conditions lead to the formation of the di‐μ‐phenoxo‐bridged dicationic complex dimers [{Cu(Hsalhyhb)}₂]²⁺ ( 1a ), [{Cu(Hsalhyhp)}₂]²⁺ ( 2a ), and [{Cu(Hsalhyhh)}₂]²⁺ ( 3a ), isolated as perchlorate salts. The dimeric complexes show strong antiferromagnetic coupling with J = ?399 ( 1a ), ?410 ( 2a ), and ?311 cm^?1 ( 3a ). Higher pH‐values resulted in the aggregation of neutral copper ligand fragments to the one‐dimensional coordination polymers [{Cu(salhyhb)}_n] ( 1b ), [{Cu(salhyhp)}_n] ( 2b ), and [{Cu(salhyhh)}_n] ( 3b ). 3b has been examined by means of X‐ray crystallography and represents the first example of a structurally characterized neutral copper(II) N‐salicylidenehydrazide complex without additional ligands. The magnetic interactions in the polymers are also antiferromagnetic with J = ?125 ( 1b ), ?136 ( 2b ), and ?148 cm^?1 ( 3b ), but strongly reduced compared to the corresponding dimeric complexes. The two basic structure types can be reversibly interconverted simply by pH‐control.

A cobalt(II)-selective PVC membrane based on a Schiff base complex of N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-3,4-diaminotoluene

A new PVC membrane electrode for Co²⁺ based on N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-3,4-diaminotoluene, an excellent neutral carrier, has been fabricated using sodium tetraphenylborate (NaTPB) as an anionic excluder and dioctylphthalte (DOP) as a solvent mediator. The electrode exhibits a linear potential response in the concentration range of 7.9 × 10⁻⁸ to 1.0 × 10⁻¹ M with a slope of 30 ± 0.2 mV per decade. The detection limit of the proposed sensor is 5.0 × 10⁻⁸ M and it can be used over a period of 5 months. The proposed sensor revealed good selectivity over a wide variety of other cations including alkali, alkaline earth, heavy and transition metals and could be used in the pH range of 2.0-9.0. This electrode was successfully applied for the determination of Co²⁺in real samples and as an indicator electrode in potentiometric titration of cobalt ions.     

Conformational state of benzilidene aniline derivatives from ab initio calculation and NMR spectroscopy data

Quantum chemical calculations of the structure and conformational state of a number of Shiff bases have been performed. ¹³C NMR spectra of investigated molecules were calculated and compared with experimental data to test verification of the used calculation model. The effect of terminal substituents on the conformation of azomethines and a relation between the conformation and ¹³C NMR chemical shift were examined.     

Interaction of vinylpyridines with 1,3-dienes catalyzed by transition metal complexes

The linear and cyclic cooligomerization of 2-vinyl-, 2-methyl-5-vinyl-, and 4-vinylpyridines with 1,3-dienes and trienes catalyzed by complexes of transition metals (Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Cr, Pd, Ru, Rh, and Zr) was carried out to give unsaturated pyridines containing alkenyl and cycloalkenyl substituents.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk.
