Thermoelectric properties of tin clathrates under hydrostatic pressure

We report the temperature dependence of electrical resistance (R) and thermopower (S) of clathrate Cs₈Sn₄₄ under high pressure up to 1.2 GPa. We observe a reversible gap widening, prominent relaxation effect of R, irreversible increase of |S| under high pressure. We also find that the power factor S²σ (σ: electrical conductivity) reaches a maximum at pressure of 0.3 GPa. Comparison of the experimental results with band structure calculations suggests that the intrinsic vacancy in the clathrate structure of Cs₈Sn₄₄ plays an important role in transport properties under high pressure. Measurements on Cs₈Zn₄Sn₄₂, a clathrate which has defects other than vacancies, are compared with Cs₈Sn₄₄. The results indicate that replacing Sn by Zn has similar effect as the intrinsic vacancy on S.     

Degrevlex Gröbner bases of generic complete intersections

In this paper, we study the Hilbert–Samuel function of a generic standard graded K-algebra

K[X₁,…,X_n]/(g₁,…,g_m)

when refined by an (ℓ)-adic filtration, ℓ being a linear form. From this we obtain a structure theorem which describes the stairs of a generic complete intersection for the degree-reverse-lexicographic order. We show what this means for generic standard (or Gröbner) bases for this order; in particular, we consider an “orderly filling up” conjecture, and we propose a strategy for the standard basis algorithm which could be useful in generic-like cases.     

An analytical proof of Hardy-like inequalities related to the Dirac operator

We prove some sharp Hardy-type inequalities related to the Dirac operator by elementary, direct methods. Some of these inequalities have been obtained previously using spectral information about the Dirac-Coulomb operator. Our results are stated under optimal conditions on the asymptotics of the potentials near zero and near infinity.     

Stable model categories are categories of modules

A stable model category is a setting for homotopy theory where the suspension functor is invertible. The prototypical examples are the category of spectra in the sense of stable homotopy theory and the category of unbounded chain complexes of modules over a ring. In this paper we develop methods for deciding when two stable model categories represent ‘the same homotopy theory’. We show that stable model categories with a single compact generator are equivalent to modules over a ring spectrum. More generally stable model categories with a set of generators are characterized as modules over a ‘ring spectrum with several objects’, i.e., as spectrum valued diagram categories. We also prove a Morita theorem which shows how equivalences between module categories over ring spectra can be realized by smashing with a pair of bimodules. Finally, we characterize stable model categories which represent the derived category of a ring. This is a slight generalization of Rickard's work on derived equivalent rings. We also include a proof of the model category equivalence of modules over the Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum HR and (unbounded) chain complexes of R-modules for a ring R.     

A new joint model for longitudinal and survival data with a cure fraction

We develop a new joint cure rate model for longitudinal and survival data. The model allows for multiple longitudinal markers as well as a cure structure for the survival component based on the promotion time cure rate model, as described in Ibrahim et al. (Bayesian Survival Analysis, Springer, New York, 2001). Several characteristics and properties of the new model are discussed and examined. A real dataset from a melanoma clinical trial is given to demonstrate the methodology.     

Equilibrated thermodesorption studies of adsorption of n-hexane and n-heptane on zeolites Y, ZSM-5 and ZSM-11

Gravimetric measurements of thermodesorption of n-hexane and n-heptane were performed under quasi-equilibrium conditions. Differential thermodesorption profiles for ZSM-5 and ZSM-11 showed two peaks, but for Y zeolites, only one thermodesorption peak was observed. A model function, derived from the Langmiur adsorption model, was fitted to the experimental data, and the model parameters (the adsorption entropy and enthalpy) were estimated. The two-step desorption profiles observed for ZSM-5 and ZSM-11 were attributed to the commensurate freezing effect, i.e. a transition in the adsorbed phase resulting in ordering of the adsorbed molecules in the zeolite channels. The results observed for ZSM-11 indicate that the zigzag channels typical for ZSM-5 micropore system are not necessary for this transition to occur.     

Adsorption of cyclic hydrocarbons on Pt and the interaction of the adsorbed species with hydrogen

The adsorption of six-membered hydrocarbon cycles and cyclopentane and the interaction of hydrogen with the adsorbed layer on polycrystalline Pt-foil have been studied. The work function change (Δφ) was followed by a Kelvin probe and the C/Pt peak ratio was determined by Auger electron spectroscopy. Combining these two techniques made it possible to distinguish between chemisorption via σ-bonds and π-complex formation. Benzene and toluene adsorbed first as π-complex while cyclohexane showed initially a partial aromatization and a π-complex-like bonding to the surface. Excess hydrocarbon or addition of hydrogen transformed the π-complex into σ-bonded species. Cyclopentane adsorbed via σ-bonds and showed no significant hydrogen effect.     

Asymptotic values of polynomial mappings of the real plane

Using algebraically constructible functions we give a generically effective method to detect asymptotic values of polynomial mappings with finite fibers defined on the real plane. By asymptotic variety we mean the set of points at which the polynomial mapping fails to be proper.     

Lieb–Thirring Inequalities for Schrödinger Operators with Complex-valued Potentials

Inequalities are derived for power sums of the real part and the modulus of the eigenvalues of a Schrödinger operator with a complex-valued potential.     

Micromechanics of ferroelectric polymer-based electrostrictive composites

Electrostriction refers to the strain induced in a dielectric by electric polarization, which is usually very small for practical application. In this paper, we present a micromechanical analysis on the effective electrostriction of a ferroelectric polyvinylidene fluoride trifluoroethylene [P(VDF-TrFE)] polymer-based composite, where the exact connections between the effective electrostrictive coefficients and effective elastic moduli are established, and numerical algorithm for the prediction of the effective electrostrictive coefficients of the composite in terms of its microstructural information is developed. From our calculations, enhanced electrostriction in the composite has been demonstrated, and optimal microstructure for electrostriction enhancement has been identified. Our analysis provides a mechanism for the electrostriction enhancement, where the electrostrictive strain several times higher than that of polymer matrix can be obtained, if the microstructure of the composites can be carefully tailored.
